5 Point Tasks

5.1 – For the Horde!
Help Thread

The 1250s saw the spread of the Mongolian empire into parts of China, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Vietnam, Korea, Lithuania and Poland.

Read a book set at least 50% in one of the above countries. For Korea, both North and South Korea are acceptable.

Required: if the setting is not obvious from the GR metadata or description, provide a reference.

5.2 – Back to School
Help Thread

Corpus Christi college, one of Cambridge University’s 31 colleges, was founded on November 7th 1352. Autumn also sees the start of the academic year in many education systems across the world – and perhaps unsurprisingly, also tends to herald a resurgence of the Dark Academia genre in books!

Read a book from the first 25 pages of this Dark Academia shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Required: state the page of the list the book is found on.

5.3 - Hot off the Press
Help Thread

Is there any historical invention more important to a book lover than that of the printing press? 1450 was the beginning of Johannes Gutenberg’s commercial operation in Mainz, Germany, revolutionising access to literature. Such is his influence that he lends his name to Project Gutenberg, the online library that gathers out-of-copyright texts as ebooks, which are available to anyone for free. As of 2023, most books dated to 1927 or earlier are eligible to be distributed via Project Gutenberg.

Read a book first published in 1927 or earlier.

5.4 - Apocalypse Not
Help Thread

The first edition of Nostradamus’ The Prophecies was published in 1555, with 53 prophecies predicting events over three centuries. Two more editions would also be published in the 1550s, with additional prophecies spanning another 300 years. Several of the prophecies have been interpreted as predicting disasters, with some even going as far to declare doomsday - one of which notably failed to occur in 1999, leading to a newspaper headline reading "Nostradamus wrong (please ignore if the world ended yesterday)"!

Read a book with the MPG Post Apocalyptic or Apocalyptic.

5.5 - Wake Up and Smell the Coffee
Help Thread

In need of a cup of joe? The first coffee house in England was opened in Oxford in 1651, with more popping up in the following years and gaining popularity as social meeting points and places to engage in debates.

Read a book with coffee beans or a cup/mug on the cover. This may be a ceramic, glass, or takeaway coffee cup.

Required: post the cover.

5.6 - We've Got Reading Down to a Fine Art
Help Thread

October 14th 1750 saw the opening of the Louvre, the world-famous art museum which has become home to such masterpieces as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.

Read a book with a word of 4 or more letters in the title that matches a word in the name of an art piece at the Louvre from this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of... . The word must match exactly, with one exception: where "St." appears in the work title, "saint" may be used instead.

Required: state the word and the art piece.

5.7 – The Evolution of PopSci
Help Thread

On the Origin of Species, Darwin’s work showcasing the theory of natural selection, was published in November 1859, rapidly becoming the foundation of evolutionary biology. The book was intended to be accessible to non-specialist readers, and while it’s not the earliest example of popular science, it is perhaps one of the most famous.

Read a book with an MPG of Science or Popular Science.

5.8 - Sit Down For What You Believe In
Help Thread

1956 saw the arrest of civil rights activist Rosa Parks following her stand against segregation in Alabama. The Montgomery bus boycott swiftly followed, becoming a pivotal moment in the US civil rights movement.

Read a book where the author’s first and last initials can be found in ROSA PARKS.

5.9 – How to Save a Language
Help Thread

Did you know that similar to the classifications for endangered animals, there’s also one for languages? The UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger has six categories ranging from “safe” to “extinct”, and there are concerted efforts to preserve certain languages that are deemed to be at risk. Welsh is one of these vulnerable languages that are undergoing a revival, with aims to have a million speakers of the language by 2050.

Read a book with a word of 4 or more letters in the title found in ONE MILLION WELSH SPEAKERS. Letters may be used only as often as they appear.

Required: state the word.

5.10 - As Easy as Falling off a Log

Is this the simplest task in the SRC? Possibly!

Read a book of your choice that meets SRC rules.
For this task, a book with the MPG Childrens, Kids, Middle Grade or Juvenile that is NOT found in ARBF may be used.

20 Point Tasks

20.1 - Most Improved: Rockynook's Task: Earning a Ph.D.
Help Thread

I am so excited to be Most Improved this season! The big reason I was able to participate so much more this summer challenge was that I finished my doctorate program in December and was finally able to spend a summer how I wanted: reading! So, for this task, I used my doctorate degree as my inspiration. I earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Teaching and Learning with an emphasis in Mathematics Education.

For this task, read a book that satisfies one of the following options.

Required: State which option you chose when posting.

A) Read a book with a title word of 3+ letters (excluding the word "the") that can be formed from the letters in DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY. Letters can only be used as many times as they appear in the phrase.

Required: State the word.

B) Read a book by a single author whose first and last initials are found in TEACHING AND LEARNING. Letters can only be used as many times as they appear in the phrase.

C) Read a book where the main character is a teacher, a professor, or a student.

Required: If the character's occupation is not evident from the GR blurb, provide a reference.

20.2 - Rookie at the Top - MaryPDX’s Task: Open to Interpretation
Help Thread

The word "fall" can have several meanings other than my favorite season. One could fall in love, empires could fall, or soldiers can fall in battle. Choose 1 book from either option below:

Required: State the option.

Option 1: Read a book with a MPG tag of Romance, History, Business or War.

Option 2: Read a book with the word FALL or FALLS is included in the title or series name. The series name must appear in greyscale on the GR book page. Subtitles are excluded, and the word must match exactly.

20.3 - Best Review - Michelle in Alaska’s Task: Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Alaska anymore.
Help Thread

The last time I designed a Best Review task was in Spring 2018. As I reflect on then versus now, I’m realizing a lot has changed about miss “Michelle in Alaska”! I’m a military spouse, so change is just part of the package. Mostly, this has been a gift, though it’s not without its challenges. New jobs, new friends, buying and selling houses… but in this task, I’d like to share about the new and exciting things going on in my life.

This is a ONE book task. Your book must have a minimum of 250 pages.
Choose ONE of the choices below.

Required: State which option you choose when you post.

OPTION 1: NEW OBSESSION. Spicy alert. Since last year, I have been absolutely devouring all things “Romantasy” (romance + fantasy) and, especially, works by Sarah J. Maas. I am obsessed with her series “A Court of Thorns and Roses” and have read it three times this past year. Don’t worry; I won’t make you read Romantasy with me for this task. Rather, for this task, read a book by a single author whose first and last initials match 2 of the 3 initials of my new favorite author: “SJM”. Initials can occur in any order; however, you may only use letters as often as they appear (e.g., MS, JM, MJ, but not MM).

OPTION 2: NEW STATE. When I wrote my last 20.3 task, I lived in Alaska (hence my Readerboard name). The military had its way with us: first, we got to live in the beautiful and spectacular San Francisco Bay Area for four years. Now we live in southern Virginia. To celebrate my new state and its rich history, read a book set at least 50% in Virginia. Nonfiction books about the state of Virginia will also be acceptable.

Required: If the setting is not clear from the GR metadata or description, provide a reference.

OPTION 3: NEW CAREER. The last time I wrote a challenge, my profession was high school French teacher. Because work in that field was impossible to come by while we were in Alaska, I decided to start coursework for a new career path in Speech-Language Pathology, which has led me to working in a hospital. It’s challenging and rewarding, but to honor my true passion and first love of foreign language teaching, read a book whose original language is French.

Required: If the original language is not clear from the GR metadata, include a reference.

OPTION 4: NEW HOBBY. My husband likes to tell the story of how I hosted my family for Thanksgiving in 2015 and left a pan of carrots on the stove before leaving the house (insert grimacing emoji here). Obviously, I have not always been terribly adept in the kitchen. Subscribing to a meal delivery kit in 2018 ignited a new-found love of cooking in me. I’m proud to say I now cook a variety of foods and rarely make the same recipe twice. For this task, read a book with PLATED food on the cover. To count, food must be on a plate or in a bowl. For example, Love & Saffron counts. Love & Gelato does not.

Required: Post the cover.

OPTION 5: NEW PREFERENCES. In 2018, I read pretty much exclusively physical books - no Kindle or audiobooks for me. However, long Bay Area commutes 100% changed the name of my reading game by presenting me with a big opportunity to delve into audiobooks. Lately, I have really come to enjoy listening to a book while playing Happy Color on my phone. It’s supremely relaxing. For this task, LISTEN to a book from this list of “Best Audio Narrations”: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/4... For non-English titles on the list, the English version may be used.

Required: State the page where your book can be found.
Required: State that you listened to the audiobook version.

Bonus: Try coloring while listening, whether in a physical coloring book or with an app like Happy Color.

OPTION 6: NEW BEVVIES. I’ll admit it. I’ve had a tumultuous love affair with Starbucks’ chai latte since 2010. I’m talking every single day. A couple years ago, when ordering my Winter usual “hot chai latte”, the barista misheard me and made me a “matcha latte”. Oops. Turns out I love matcha, and now it’s my go-to order. Something about that beautiful, vibrant green color makes me happy. For this task, read a book that is at least 75% (i.e., 75%+) green according to TinEye. https://labs.tineye.com/color/
Complete directions for using Tineye can be found here: "How Do I Use Tineye?"
Required: Post the cover.

20.4 - Golden Oldies - Paula S's Task: Autumn in Sweden
Help Thread

When I was a child we didn't have any days off school during the autumn, just a long row of dark and rainy days. Nowadays we have imported the Halloween festivities from US, and the kids get a week off from school around that time. The teachers try to call it a reading holiday, and some older people are upset that a fun holiday focused on getting candy is competing with the old tradition of remembering the dead by putting lit candles on their graves. I'm just pleased that there finally is something to break up the monotony of rain and darkness. This task is based around these old and new traditions.

Required: State the options chosen.

Option 1: Read a book with one of the words RAIN, RAINY, RAINS, RAINING or RAINED in the title or subtitle. Only these words work, no variations.
E.g. Henderson the Rain King, The Art of Racing in the Rain

Option 2: Read a book with a lit candle on the cover.
E.g. Peril in Paperback (Bibliophile Mystery, #6) by Kate Carlisle Legend of the Jade Dragon (Chintz 'n China #2) by Yasmine Galenorn Skuggorna ruva (Nathalie Svensson, #5) by Jonas Moström Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty
Required: Post the cover.

Option 3: Read a book with MPG Halloween
E.g. Hallowe'en Party, A Night in the Lonesome October

Option 4: Since this is the golden oldies task, read a book from this list of Great Children's Books Written Prior to the 1950s: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Required: State in your post the PAGE of the list on which your book is found.
NOTE: All SRC rules such as page length and the Childrens book rules apply, even if a book appears on the list.

20.5 - Bigger is Better - Insiyah's Task: Pre-Loved
Help Thread

So far this year, I've managed to pick up 35 pre-loved books because I keep popping into charity shops where they are so cheap that it's almost impossible to resist picking them up. Most of them are new to me.

Read a book that has 3 and 5 in the page count. The book must be new to you.

Required: State the book is new to you.

20.7 - Shorter is Sweeter - KSMary's Task: Season of Change
Help Thread

Fall brings both the birthday of my husband and daughter. This year will also be the retirement of my husband who retired from the National Guard after 34 years of service a few years ago and now his civilian job which is also military related while my daughter is completing her first year as a practicing attorney. To celebrate, we will be going to a NFL game to see our favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs and our favorite college team throughout the season.

The genres of children, sequential art and graphic novels/comics are not allowed for this task.

Choose one of the following options.
Required: State the option.

Option 1 – Read a book with a main character who is a military service member, a veteran or who is an attorney (or equivalent legal role such as a barrister, advocate etc.) - the character may be actively practicing or retired. Books may be either fiction or non-fiction.

Required: If the character's occupation is not clear from the GR book description, provide a reference.

Option 2 – The official colors of the Kansas City Chiefs are red and gold while the official colors of his college team are purple, gray, white and black with silver as an accent.

Read a book with red, gold, purple, gray, white, black or silver in the title, subtitle, series name or author’s name.

Words must be standalone and spelled exactly as listed (Ex: grey for gray is not allowed). Plurals and possessives are not allowed. If using the series name, the series name must appear in greyscale on the GR book page.

20.8 - Nickels and Dimes - Julia103's Task - Loose Change
Help Thread

Since this is the Nickels & Dimes task, read a book in which a denomination of coin is found in the title (subtitles excluded).
The coin can be in current circulation or one that is no longer used, and slang terms may be used. The word may have a meaning in the title other than the coin. If a coin name has more than one word the entire name must be intact in the title. A partial name, such as "golden" or "half" will not work for this task unless it is common usage.
Plurals and possessives allowed but no other variations.

Required: Specify the name of the coin you are using, and the country in which it is/was used. If you are using a slang term, provide a reference to establish common usage.

Examples: Chasing the Dime (Dime, USA)
The Moon and Sixpence (Sixpence, England)
Quarter Share (Quarter, USA)
A Life of Loonies (Loonie, Canada)

20.9 - Moderator's Pet - Terri FL's Task - ChatGPT
Help Thread

I have lately been experimenting with ChatGPT, one of the new AI tools, both for work as well as personal things (it comes up with great book club discussion questions!). For this challenge, I tried to see what ChatGPT would come up with as a prompt. I had a couple weird duds at first that didn’t make sense like Genre Hop Challenge – to read only 100 pages of a book before changing to another genre, etc. After a couple attempts at explaining, I got a few interesting prompts.

No children's books. Your book must be at least 250 pages.

Choose one of the following options.
Required: state the option.

Option A: This was the first challenge that made sense and ChatGPT gave me a helpful follow-up list. Read a book that has won an obscure literary award or was a finalist in a lesser-known book prize. For this option, we will use the prizes provided, The Goldsmiths Prize, Dylan Thomas Prize, Walther Scott Prize for Historical Fiction or Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction. Your book may be either a winner or a nominee.

Below are the GR links:

https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...
https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...
https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...
https://www.goodreads.com/award/show/...

Required: State which of the prizes your book won/was nominated for.

Option B: I live in Florida so am in the middle of hurricane season. I told this to ChatGPT, and this was its prompt – Read a book with cover art that includes any of these weather phenomena, storms, or natural disasters: rain, tidal wave, tornado, snow, or stormy skies (lightning or dark clouds).

Required: Post the cover.

Option C: I then let ChatGPT know that in my town of Sarasota, the fall means Amish/Mennonite pies for Thanksgiving! My resulting prompt was to read a book with a pie on the cover or a book set in a rural or Amish community.

Required: If using the cover option, post the cover.
Required: If using the setting option, if the setting is not obvious from the GR metadata or book description, provide a reference.

Option D: As fun as ChatGPT is, we certainly hope AI is not taking over the world, so for this option, read a book where AI is a key theme. This is a good starting place, but need not be from one of these lists - https://www.goodreads.com/genres/arti...

Required: If the AI theme is not obvious from the GR metadata or book description, provide a reference.

20.10 - Group Reads

Read one of the books selected as a group read for the Fall 2023 season. The requirement for this task: you must participate in the book's discussion thread below with at least one post about the contents of the book or your reaction to the book after you have read the book.

Books Turned Into TV Shows: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Discussion
Families: The Witches of Moonshyne Manor by Bianca Marais

25 Point Tasks

25.1 - Andy P.’s Task: “Eat Your Words”
Help Thread

As a retired Librarian I try to adhere to the practice of respecting Intellectual Property . I therefore recognize that the idea for this task came from the June 2016 edition of Games Magazine. The creator of the puzzle “Eat Your Words” is Stephen Sniderman. Mr. Sniderman’s puzzle is more complex than my task which I have adapted to create a Seasonal Reading Challenge.

First and foremost, this task is intended for adults, so no book that has Childrens, or Sequential Arts, Comics or Manga as a genre may be used.

This is a two book challenge, and the combined page count for these books must total 500 pages or more.

For this task you will read two books that satisfy the following conditions:
Select a word that is “hungry” enough to “eat” another word Your word must “eat” another word (minimum of two letters, not a proper noun such as a name) in its entirety. In other words, the eaten word appears intact with all the letters together in the same order within the hungry word’s letters.

Examples of hungry word eats word:

Relic can eat Pub to become Republic
Magic can eat Net to become Magnetic
Swing can eat Allow to become Swallowing
Seated can eat Par to become Separated

Please note that both words retain their letter sequence and the word that is doing the eating surrounds the eaten word.
You now have three words, the beginning word (Relic), the eaten word (Pub) and the newly created word (Republic).

Read two books, each of which has a title and/or subtitle that matches a different word selected from the three in your creative endeavor.

Required: State your hungry word, your eaten word, and the word it has created.

25.2 - Delicious Dee's Task: The Big Bang Theory
Help Thread

So as truth would have it, I probably would have wrapped up this last season of SRC a lot sooner than I did, if I hadn’t decided to do a complete series watch of the Big Bang Theory. I was one of those people who held out for the longest time from watching it – so it wasn’t until one of my international trips this past year where it was an option on the plane that I started watching and then I had to go back to the beginning.

So help me celebrate Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Raj, Bernadette and Amy with my task this season.

For this task you will pick one of the THREE options. Options 1 and 3 have a Book A and Book B option. Option 2 allows you to pick 2 books from a series of shelves.

No Children’s Books or Graphic Novels allowed.

Required: State the options chosen.

Option 1
Book A: The Big Bang Theory introduced us to the characters of Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Penny (no last name, at least at the beginning of the series), Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, Bernadette Rostenkowski and Amy Farrah Fowler.
Read a book where the MAIN character shares a name part with one of the BBT bunch. The name MUST appear in the book description or the Goodreads character list. Names MUST match exactly but may be in any position (and all three of Amy’s names may be used)
Example: Misery - Paul "Sheldon" for Sheldon Cooper

Required: State the character names.

Book B: The BBT bunch were played by Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik
Read a book by a SINGLE author, who shares a name part with one of the main actors from the Big Bang Theory. Names must match exactly but may be in any position.
example: The Hazel Wood - Melissa Albert - Melissa Albert for Melissa Rauch (Bernadette)

Required State the actor name.

Option 2
Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Amy are all PhD’s working at CalTech. Howard is an engineer who is on loan to CalTech and Bernedette receives her PhD mid-way through the series. Penny is a waitress/actress.

Pick TWO different options from the following shelves and read a book from the first 5 pages of each shelf. One of your books MUST be Non-Fiction:

Astrophysics (for Raj) - Astrophysics Books

Physics (for Sheldon and Leonard) - Physics Books

Neuroscience (for Amy) - Neuroscience Books

Microbiology (for Bernadette) - Microbiology Books

Engineering (for Howard) - Engineering Books

Actress (for Penny) Actress Books
Required: State the shelves you used and the page number the book was located on.

Option 3
BBT was 12 seasons long, running from 2006 through 2019. Using the following link, spin the wheel – that is your season - https://wheelgenerator.com/random-num...

Book A – read a book with AT LEAST a three-letter word in the title (excluding the, and) that shares a word with one of the seasons episodes from this list. For series episodes that have a hyphenated title (i.e. Season Two’s "The Lizard–Spock Expansion" – you can use either word – lizard or spock): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
Required: - State the season number, Episode Title and Word

Book B – read a book whose number in a series corresponds to the season number you spun. The series must have a minimum of three published books, and the series name and number must be indicated in the GR title listing in grayscale parentheses following the title or grayscale italics above the title.
Required – state the season number.

25.3 - Jen B's Task: Grease (Is the Word)
Help Thread

I missed the 1950s by a few decades, but as a kid, I became obsessed with the era thanks to the movie Grease. The movie takes place in and around a 1950s American high school, and chronicles the adventures, loves, and antics of greaser Danny and Aussie exchange student Sandy. In honor of this classic, choose two books that fit the options below:

Required: State the options chosen.

Option 1: Summer Nights
According to the story, Danny meets Sandy on summer vacation and the pair have a summer romance. The two are depicted alone on the beach in the film's first scene. Read a book with the MPG Romance that has exactly TWO people on the cover. Animals, etc. are okay, but only two people.

Required: Post the cover

Option 2: We Go Together
The pair meet again when Sandy, whose family has "had a change of plans" begins attending Rydell High School with Danny. Sandy becomes immersed in American High School culture by joining the cheerleading squad and attending a sleepover.

Read a book that meets SRC rules from one of these lists:

Books Set in High School (686 books) |https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

50 Must-Read Books Set in School For Your TBR | Book Riot
https://bookriot.com/must-read-books-...

School Novels (97 books) | Goodreads
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

50 of the Most Essential High School Stories - B&N Reads (barnesandnoble.com)
https://www.barnesandnoble.com/blog/5...

Required: State the list you used, and if using the GR "Books Set in High School" list, specify the page of the list where the book was found.

Option 3: Hopelessly Devoted To You
The guys and the girls show their devotion to their friends by sticking with their cliques -- the T Birds and Pink Ladies.

Read a book with a two word title, where the first letters of both words can be found in either TBIRDS or PINKLADIES

Required: state which of the phrases TBIRDS or PINKLADIES you used.

Option 4: Greased Lightnin'
Apparently, the film's title was chosen because of its multiple meanings. Danny and the T Birds put grease in their hair to style it. They also get grease on their hands from working on their car (Greased Lightnin'). And, the French fries and burgers the group snacks on at the diner sure are full of grease.

Read a book with a word from this list of words with multiple meanings in the title. Plurals and possessives are acceptable.
https://word-lists.com/word-lists/100...

Required: State the word

Option 5: Rock 'N' Roll Is Here To Stay
I finally got to see Grease on the big screen in college when a Grease Singalong was released for the film's 20th anniversary. The soundtrack has long been a favorite that I turn to when I need a pick me up.
Read a book with a word in the title of four or more letters that matches a word in one of the song titles.
https://www.discogs.com/master/97901-...
Words must match exactly, with the exception of lightnin' (can use Lightning). Hyphenated words can be separated (i.e. can use Drive instead of Drive-In)

Required: State the word and the song.

25 Point Tasks

25.4 - Kristina Simon's task: Sailing Abaco
Task created on behalf of Wanda
Help Thread

We have a boat! We are currently waiting out hurricane season on the hard in St. Augustine, Florida. Once the hurricane threat (and the heat) ease up, we'll be working on boat projects with an eye toward splashing the boat this winter. Come along for the adventure!

This is a two book task. Read one book from two different options.
Required: State the options.

Option 1: Our boat is a Seawind 1000. She's an Australian design that has traveled the world to end up in a Florida boatyard when Covid hit. For this option, read a book written by an author found on this list: Books by Australian Authors
Books with multiple authors will work as long as least one of the author appears on the provided list
Australian Authors

The book you read does not need to appear on the list, but the author must.
Required: State the page the author can be found on when you post.

Option 2: Our boat was built in 2000. She's 23 years old! For this option, read a book that was first published in 2000.

Option 3: The Seawind 1000 is a catamaran design, which means it has two hulls. For this option, read a book that is #2 in a series. The series name and number must be indicated in the GR title listing in grayscale parentheses following the title or grayscale italics above the title.

Option 4: One of the boat-projects-to-come will include a renaming ceremony. We've decided to name her Abaco, in homage to one of our favorite island chains. For this option, read a book with all the letters of ABACO found in any combination of the title/subtitle/series name/author's name.
Required: If using the series name, include the series title when you post.

Option 5: Once the boat is in the water, we plan to cruise the Gulf Coast (Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas), the Eastern Seaboard (Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia), and the Bahamas. For this option, read a book set at least 50% in one or more of the locations listed.
Required: If the setting is not obvious from the GR metadata or description, provide a reference to establish location.

Option 6: Starlink has opened up the possibilities of living a cruising lifestyle without having to give up paying work. It will allow us to connect not only with work, but also with family, friends, and (most importantly) my library's e-collections and Goodreads! For this option, read a book with an 8-letter compound word that is made up of two 4-letter words in the title/subtitle. Ex: starlink (star/link), sailboat (sail/boat), boatyard (boat/yard) hometown (home/town), bookmark (book/mark), barefoot (bare/foot)

25.5 - Lois' Task: Hear! Here!
Help Thread

Misuse of homophones, words that sound the same but have different spellings and different meanings, has been a lifelong pet peeve of mine, and the abuse seems to be getting worse all the time!

Using this list of 101 English homophones https://onlineteachersuk.com/english-... choose a set of homophones and read two books, each with one of your chosen homophones in the title. You may include subtitles. Words must match exactly, no variations.

For example, if you’ve chosen the homophones Their and There:
How the García Girls Lost Their Accents
And Then There Were None

Required: State the set of homophones.

25.6 - Robin P's Task: Four and More
Help Thread

Read 2 books as described below:

Book 1 – There is at least one word of exactly 4 letters in the title (not subtitle). You will want to choose based on Book 2. You can ignore apostrophes, for example you could use MANS in Man's Fate or ISNT in Tepper Isn't Going Out. There could be more than one word of 4 letters in the title but you will only use one for this task.
Required: State the word.

Book 2 – There is one word of 5 or more letters in the title (not subtitle) which contains the 4 letters in your first title. See examples and important exception below.
Required: State the word.

Example: Book 1: Big Little Lies – 4-letter word LIES
Book 2: Letters of LIES can be in the same order – The Lilies of the Field has LIES
OR letters can be in a different order – The Silent Patient has SILE
OR letters can be separated – Slippery Creatures has SLIE within the word
All the letters must be within one specific word of 5 or more letters

Important Exception - Plurals and possessives formed with “s” are not acceptable for Book 2, so, for example, you can’t use The Tale of the Body Thief and Tales of the City as your two books, and you can't use Lady Boss and The Boss's Daughter.

Letters of the 4-letter word do not have to be 4 different ones – you could use the word MOON as in Moon Tiger, then use The Unhoneymooners, Song of Solomon, etc. for your Book 2. For Book 2, you can use a longer version of the word in Book 1, such as BOOK and BOOKSELLER, BOOKSTORE, NOTEBOOK, etc.

25 Point Tasks

25.7 - MegSCL's Task: It's Called Autumn!!
Help Thread

Even after nearly 10 years in SRC, I still find the season "Fall" sounds strange. So this task is inspired by differences between American and British English.

Book 1: Read a book with a term in the title or subtitle from this list of differences between American and British English. https://www.thoughtco.com/american-en... - in the table on this page. You can use the term from either language. Plurals/singulars are allowed. No other variations - where a word on the list appears hyphenated, it must be hyphenated in the book title/subtitle; if a term is a two-word phrase, both words must be present.
Required: state the term.

Book 2: Read a book with a word in the title or subtitle that is spelled differently in the two languages using one of the rules below. It doesn't have to be one of the example words given (e.g. you can use any word that ends in -our in British and -or in American, not only color/colour), but it must relate to one of the 8 rules listed below. You can use the word from either language. "variations that maintain the rule and meaning of the word are allowed, e.g. coloured, colorful, analysing, kilometer"
Required: state the word and rule used.

Spelling rules:
-our (British) vs. -or (American) eg. colour vs. color
-ise or -ize (British) vs. only -ize (American) eg. apologise vs. apologize
-yse (British) vs. –yze (American) eg. analyse vs. analyze,
AE (British) vs. E (American) eg. leukaemia vs. leukemia
-ence (British) vs. -ense (American) eg. defence vs. defense
-ogue (British) vs. -og or -ogue (American) eg. dialogue vs. dialog
-re (British) vs. -er (American) eg. metre vs. meter
Double L in a verb conjugation (British) vs. single L (American) eg. travelled vs. traveled

25.10 - RedSycamore's Task: It's My Party!
Task created on behalf of JP
Help Thread

My birthday falls right before Halloween, and while some people don't like having a birthday that coincides with a major holiday, I've always loved it. I had a childhood full of birthday parties with fun, spooky themes and droves of very excited friends and classmates. My love of all things macabre has stuck with me, including the Addams family. One of my favorite books of the original comics, Dear Dead Days, was published in 1959.

Since I'm referencing the amazing Charles Addams, books with MPG comics/manga/etc are okay for this task, but no books with MPG kids/middle grade/etc.

This is a two book task. Choose 2 books to read from the options below, the same option may be repeated.
Required: State the options.

Option 1: In honor of Dear Dead Days, read a book with a title that contains at least two words of four or more letters. All of the 4+ letter words must begin with the same first letter. Subtitles are excluded from the requirement.

Some Examples:
Gone Girl
Love's Labour's Lost
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
The Black Book

Option 2: It's my party! Read a book by the author of a book I've rated 5 stars (the full list of allowed authors is posted in the task help thread). Books with multiple authors, including anthologies, are fine as long as one of the authors listed in the authors section on the book's Goodreads page is an author of a book I've rated 5 stars. Any other contributors listed in the authors section (narrators, editors, translators, etc) don't count.

Option 3: One of my favorite things about my Halloween birthday was that everyone was always so happy and excited because of the impending holiday. It almost felt like a celebration for everyone, so for this option it can be your party, too.

Read a book that was first published in your birth year or in mine, 1984.
Required: State your birth year (or that you used mine).

Option 4: Keep in the Halloween spirit by reading a book with MPG Paranormal, Horror, Suspense, or Thriller (exact genres only, i.e. the MPG 'Gothic Horror' wouldn't count towards this option).

Option 5: Read one book that of 500 pages or more that meets the requirements of two different options.

Required: State which two options' criteria your single book meets.

30.4 - Katrisa's Task: Going Home
Help Thread

This summer I had a chance to visit my hometown of San Diego for the first time since the pandemic. For this trip I went with my sister who had been adopted and found us 5 years ago thanks to a DNA company. For this 2 book task choose two different options (for options with an A or B you must choose only one sub-option). For this task you may use 1 book with a children’s genre listed as long as it fits SRC criteria - no graphic novels/comics. Total page count of the two books must be at least 500 pages. Where a book appearing on a list is part of a series, you may use another book from that series. However, you MUST specify the original book from the list and the series MUST appear in greyscale on the GR book page.

Option 1 - First I flew to Oregon and the two of us drove down the coast. Our first stop was the redwoods. As a So Cal native I had never been to the northern part of my home state. The redwoods were absolutely breathtaking! As we were wandering through the massive trees I couldn’t help but feel like I was in a fairy land. Read a new-to-you book from the first 20 pages of the Fae Book Shelf https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/fae
Required: State the page of the list the book is on and that the book is new-to-you.

Option 2 - Growing up in San Diego means I grew up loving the beach! To this day I feel like a piece of me is missing because I am in a landlocked state now. I was excited to share my home beaches with my sister. For this task read a book with a word of at least 4 letters in the title that matches one of the “beaches in the city of San Diego” beaches from this wiki list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Word must match exactly with the exception that you can disregard an ‘s (for example you can use children for Children’s Pool Beach). You may not use the words state, city, beach or surf park - just the names of the beaches. You also can’t use things on the list that are not names of beaches like “access to tidepools” or “fishing pier”.
Required: State the name of the beach.

Option 3 - This was the first time I got to hang out with my sister that I met in my 40s for an extended period by ourselves.

Required: State the sub-option.

A - Read a book from this list of “Must Read Books About Sisters”
https://bookriot.com/100-must-read-bo...
Required: state the number your book was on the list

B - Read a book from this list of books with adopted characters
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...
Required: State the page of the list your book was on.

Option 4 - One of the funniest things I found when I was home was how literally everyone apologized for the “bad weather” while we were there (in June) because it was in the high 60s and overcast most of the time. The average high temperature in San Diego only fluctuates 11 degrees all year! I live in Utah now where I have seen a 30 degree difference in temperature happen overnight. My current city’s average high temperature fluctuates by 56 degrees over the year.

A - San Diego: Read a book with a page count that has two of the same digits next to each other (ex. 117 or 266)
B - Salt Lake City: Read a book with a page count that has two consecutive numbers in its digits (ex. 236 or 412)

Required: State the sub-option.

30.5 - Nick KY's Task: True Chills
Help Thread

An Octoberly cool and scary task. Read two books from two different options. The total page count must be 500+ pages.

Required: state the options.

Opt. 1. Read a biography, autobiography, or memoir. The book must be nonfiction (NOT a biographical novel).

Required: If the book does not have an MPG of “Biography” or “Autobiography” or the (auto)biography genre is not obvious from the GR blurb, provide a reference.

Opt. 2. Every October, I have a tradition of re-reading Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” in one sitting every October. The first time I did so, the experience was one of the spookiest reads ever, and the chills continue every time I pick it up. Read a book from the first 25 pages of this list:
Psychological Horror Books

Required: State what page of the list your book is found on.

Opt. 3. October 14. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. In today’s world, we view Columbus critically, questioning his motives, the motives of his patrons, and the merits of Western expansion in general. Read a book from the first 25 pages of this “Postcolonialism” list: Postcolonialism Books

OR – because I realize that the world of postcolonial theory may not interest everybody, read a book from the first 25 pages of this “Colonial Romance” list: Colonial Romance Books

Required: State which list you used and on what page of the list your book is found on.

Opt. 4. Truly Cold. Read a book with the word “Cold” or the word “Frozen” in the title/subtitle. The word must be stand-alone and be exact.

50.1 Angela IL's Task: Sort by...
Help Thread

Read three books, each from different options. The three books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with children, kids or related genres on the main book page may be used.

Go to the My Books tab, select Want To Read on the left hand side. At the bottom of the page is an option to sort your TBR in multiple ways. Choose three different ways to sort your personal TBR and pick three options listed below.

Most people will hold one TBR list called "Want-To-Read" and you should use that for this task.
If you have created an additional TBR list such as "Bookshelf-TBR" or "Books I own - TBR" that is a subset of your TBR which contains books you own/have access to then you may use that for this challenge. You should not use a TBR list that is further specialised (eg "TBR-Terry Pratchett books" or "TBR-NewReleases")

This is a Goodreads challenge, so we encourage everyone to use the site. However if you do not hold a TBR list at all on Goodreads, then you may read a book from a TBR list held elsewhere, but should note this on your post.

All books must have been added to your TBR before October 20th 2023 to count for this challenge.

If the book has not been published yet, does not meet SRC requirements, or you are unable to acquire a copy (i.e. library does not carry a copy) you can choose the next book. If a book in a series comes up that you have not yet reached, read the book in the series that is next for you.

Option 1: Read the book that has been on your TBR the longest or the shortest. Sort by Date Added. (The Newest must have been added before Oct 20, 2023)

Required: State date added to your TBR list

Option 2: Read the book that has the lowest rating on your TBR or the highest. Sort by Avg Rating.

Required: State the rating at time of reading

Option 3: Read the book that has the shortest page count (must follow SRC rules of length/ genre, etc.) or that has the longest page count. Sort by Num pages.

Option 4: Read a book chosen randomly by the GR generator. Sort by Random and read the first book listed.

Option 5: Read a book that starts with an A or starts with a Z. Sort by Title. Ignore A, The, or An. Keep in mind it will also sort books you have already read so scroll until you get an unread book (or do a reread if you desire) and you may also get a number title, which you can chose instead.

For example: If I sort by title on my own TBR, I could read 12 of Never by James Patterson or Abandon Me by Melissa Febos.

Option 6: Read a book with the highest number of rating or the lowest number of ratings. Sort by Num Ratings.

Required: State amount of ratings at time of reading
