The Black Flower: A Novel of the Civil War by Howard Bahr (American Civil War)
or if you want a book with more international appeal,
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (World War II)
I was looking through my highly rated books, and found quite a few historical fiction books set during a war among them.

There are quite a number of countries that are still blue on our project spreadsheet. Read a book (other than those listed) set in one of those countries. (BTW - this should also include Norfolk Is which is accidentally marked orange.)
Anyhow, this would be difficult so IMO shouldn't be a regular task.

It could be both the golden age for mysteries and science fiction. (This should cover most members tastes).

I like this idea.

This list is just included as an example showing that there are many genres that fall into this category: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

An author who combines historical fiction and magical realism.
An author who is a woman of color.

Ooo. This might be fun. Might find out about an author you didn’t know was really writing undercover!

Read a book with the word sun or moon in the title. Plural, possessives, and compound words included.
Examples:
Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
Moonflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

This task is inspired by Ed Yong. Read a book that is tagged 'science' (insert rating suggestion here).
This list is for inspiration: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/6...

Everyone’s taste is different, and sometimes I think a book is much better than its rating would indicate. Read a book that has a goodreads rating less than 3.5

Normally, RWS allows one carry over book that is less than halfway completed. Since I read several books at once I often end up with either too many books at the end of the season that have been started or a couple of books that are just over half read. For this task you can either: A. Finish a book that is less than 50 percent read. Or
B. Finish two books that are each between 50 and 75 percent read.

Read a book with a geometric shape in the title or subtitle. The form of the word can be any part of speech. Eg circle, circular, circulate all qualify
The word must be on this list of shapes : https://www.aaastateofplay.com/the-co...

Read a book set in a country or colony that no longer exists. Books set in a country prior to a national Independence Day will qualify. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
If a substantial change occurred (e.g., dissolution of the USSR) which is noted on this website, and no official Independence Day exists, request approval in the task thread

Read a book by an author whose first name (not a single initial) begins with a, e, i, o, or u.

read a book by an author who has consecutive same consonants in their name.

* In honor of Laurie R. King and Jacqueline Winspear read a historical mystery.

Please use this thread to suggest a title or an author you would like to see honored in the Fall 2023 challenge. Then provide a possible task for each.
An author born late in the 20th Century or who lived long ago?
An author on a wikipedia list?
Did the book win an award or does it fit a particular genre?
Was there a theme in the book that other authors also write about?
What about a general setting or time period?
Are the characters of an identifiable group by profession or circumstance?
You know how it goes at Reading with Style. Feel free to post as many or as few tasks as you wish.
