"WEEK 1: Roll 2
Spot: 12
King's (The King Trilogy, #1) by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff
Book:
King's (The King Trilogy #1)
Read: Done 3/23
Rating & Review: ★★
I tried reading the e-book twice and put it down. I thought listening to the audiobook would make the book more palatable. I was wrong.

Mia Turner received word that her brother, who was traveling in Mexico with some buddies, was kidnapped. Mia went to a mercenary for help rescuing her brother.
King agrees to help Mia but his payment is "her". He wants to OWN Mia. King's attitude chaffed a lot, I began noticing that every other page, Mia called King, the devil, evil, deranged or some version of those words.

As the story progressed, the author added in some supernatural elements. For instance, it became clear that both King and Mia had "gifts" and they tried to used to them to rescue Mia's only brother who was actually involved in a sinister artifact scheme.

The dialogue with Mia and King got repetitive and I didn't connect with either character. The characters weren't fleshed out enough for my enjoyment. I would have preferred if the author decided to pair them to just do it instead of the back and forth teasing while in the next sentence Mia would proclaim King to be a monster. I found King a lot less annoying toward the end of the book, but I am unsure if my curiosity will be enough motivation to continue with book 2.

This was good. I liked the way Ginny changed from being very dependent on her boyfriend to a strong independent responsible mother. Also the relationship between the three girls even through Ginny's depression after Josh left her. I really disliked Josh's parents. I like free books that draw me in so I want to buy the next books in the series.

Along Came a Spider (Alex Cross, #1) by James Patterson by James Patterson

Finished: 3/25/15
Rating: ★★★★
Review:

I have been meaning to give this one a try forever, but kept putting it off. I think Patterson's writing can be really cheesy, but this was the best I have read from him. It kept me up turning pages ALL NIGHT last night, which makes it deserve 4 stars. One of my pet peeves in mysteries/thrillers is the use of "multiple personality disorder," because it's a total cop out. Patterson managed to weave this in without completely relying on it, so that's ok. I felt disappointed by the resolution of the relationship between the two main characters, but that's all I'll say so I don't give anything away. Also, I found the portrayal of the main character (a black inner-city detective) to be extremely exaggerated and borderline offensive.

I wish, still working on it! But, it's pretty much "written" I'm just going back through it and checking for typos and misspellings and making sure I'm including everything the teacher wants to see. In grad school, the professors are so vague, they're like "it could include this" or "it depends". This is the second paper and both times I've just said screw it, it is what is. Last paper I got an A so maybe it will work again :)

This was not one of my favorites in this series, which I otherwise have loved. It just didn't come together for me. I felt no connection with the characters and there was no real climax...just a strange man doing strange things. The upside: it was very short. Almost felt like a novella. I got through it pretty quickly. Looking forward to the next one...I am hopeful that it will be more interesting.

I was kind of bored with this story. The Montgomery family, who consisted of 3 brothers and a mother, decide to renovate/restore an old haunted inn. Each brother brings some expertise to the restoration project and soon, it becomes the talk of the town.

The main brother featured here is Beckett Montgomery and he gets a chance to finally pursue his high school crush Claire. Claire and her 3 young sons returned to town after her husband was killed in combat while serving in the US military. This book was their journey to each other as a second chance at love.

Honestly, I just didn't care about the ghost or the inn. The romance part was paced well, so it wasn't insta-love, but it was still kind of meh. I don't care enough to pursue this series further.

This was a quite fun read. I liked the interaction between real people (the real people of this book) and the fictional characters. The funniest part though was when I was caught up in the book and then thought they had made printing mistakes in the book.
(About the Bookworms): "They were happily farting out apostrophes and ampersands". Just after this sentence there were suddenly a lot of ' and & in all the words and I didn't catch on right away, just complained to my husband that it was difficult reading and annoying that this mistake had been made. In the middle of my complaining I suddenly understood. I think it was very well done.

I didn't realize that this was a sequel to No Time For Goodbye (another Barclay novel.) I don't really remember that one too well, but I do remember finding the characters pretty boring. However, the story was pretty good and very suspenseful. Barclay should have stopped while he was ahead and should not have tried to make a new novel with this family. It was silly and nothing really happened. No twists and turns...just going through the motions.
