HOW IT WORKS:
- All the titles of the books read for this challenge must form a chain linked by the first and last letters.

For example:
First I read:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
So then my next book’s title has to start with the letter E:
Escape Room
And then my next book’s title has to start with m:
Masterminds

And on and on...

You can decide to either use “The” at the start of titles or ignore them.
Like The Unforgettable Guinevere St. Clair could be classed as starting with a T or if you ignore the “The” then it starts with a U.

THE RULES:
- No need to sign up just join in😊
- The books read can be MG, YA, NA, or adult.
- The books can be any genre.
- Manga, graphic novels, and books in other languages can all count too.
- This challenge starts in June 2023.

Hey guys! I actually forgot, but we've done this challenge before back in 2020! The rules are more relaxed this time though, so just have fun with it and let's see how long a chain we can all make...

message 5: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 516 comments Yep I remember the first challenge! I was also really dedicated and did it for two months XD But that one is slightly different because you were allowed to use the character’s name, author’s name, and setting into the chain. This one is more challenging because it’s just the title. Also the first one, we all had to start with the title, author, or character starting with an A and then go down from there. But yea, I’m excited to do a slight variation of it.

@Little Reading Wizard me too! I’ve already picked my first book to start with and it seems really good so I’m excited👏🏻

@Ilsen oh no! I thought because it was less confusing this time it’s more easier. But I guess getting rid of the options for creating the chain does make it a bit more limited when you pick your next read. Maybe that’s why we did it that way in the past🤔 it was so long ago, I forgot we even did it until you reminded me😂

Yes! This would be like titles that start with “The” or “A”. You can choose to use them or ignore them, it’s up to you😊

So guyssss, has everyone managed to choose their first book to start off their chain tomorrow yet? I think I’m going to go with Shoot the Breeze. I’ve had my eye on it since last month and I looks like a fun adult murder mystery👏🏻

Lynn (ftbooklover) | 615 comments Starting You Lucky Dog by Julia London.

Because of some other obligations, I'm going to have to read some books that don't fit in the chain, but I'm also going to keep my chain going. I even set up a Goodreads shelf for it. I just realized that it's going to be tougher than I thought it would be.

@Chara😂😂 starting from A is fun. We could’ve done an alphabet challenge instead! I will mentally store that idea for next time

I’ve just downloaded a bunch of comics on hoopla and I’m now realising how difficult it is to put them in a readable order for this challenge. It may be the case that some of the ones I read won’t be able to fit into my title chain😞

Anyway I’m starting with my first read today Shoot the Breeze! Excited for it!

Ooh! You made that fit really well! I went to sleep last night trying to rack my brain for books I know starting with E😂

AurorainBookland | 707 comments I went through my TBR when this was posted to make sure I'd have picks, some books on TBR arent at library.

Summer Lifeguards (Summer Lifeguards, #1) by Elizabeth Doyle Carey

Second Chance Summer by Sarah Kapit

The Retake by Jen Calonita I own this but never read it.

Ellie Engle Saves Herself by Leah Johnson

Finally Seen by Kelly Yang

Probably won't get through them all though.

Oh hey I’ve read the retake! It took me ages but I actually finished it. It was a really good concept and I enjoyed it but the end was not fulfilling enough for my liking.

Ok so I’ve decided not to start my chain with Shoot the Breeze anymore. I started it and it’s pretty good but I’m not in a mystery mood now, that was more of a last month feeling.

So instead I’m starting my chain with Beastly. Love a good retelling and a good YA romance! Hopefully it will be good...

message 19: by CraftyChara (new)

CraftyChara | 423 comments I love Beastly I thought that it was better than the movie Cloaked is my favourite Alex Flinn book

message 20: by Kadi, Creator (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 4256 comments Mod
I've only just started it but I can already understand that Cloaked is about the frog guy from the message forum at the beginning of Beastly😂

I might watch the movie afterwards as I do quite like teen Alex Pettyfer (remember the I Am Number Four movie? Yes the books are better but that movie is nostalgic for me now)

Also the author's other book Fade to Black sounds good and I've just gotten a copy of it so if my chain somehow swivels to the letter F I'll try to fit that read in.

message 21: by CraftyChara (new)

CraftyChara | 423 comments OMG I just realized that! I mean it could be I just never made that connection 😅

Nine times out of ten the books are usually better than the movie.

Note: Are there any movies that you like more than the book?

I'm also nostalgic for Pettyfer's movies though, I do remember the nostalgia being better in my day😉

I agree there, the book is usually always better than the movie but there are some exceptions for me.

Like I love the Giver movie because of the cast and the soundtrack and I think it was smart of them to age Jonah up from his young age in the book.
Also the Ender’s Game movie even though the movie changes the entire plot from the book I still love it. I was a big big fan of Asa Butterfield and Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld when I was a young and then it blew my mind when they were all in that movie together. Plus it has a great soundtrack. It’s one of my all time fave movies.

I liked the Maze Runner movie more than the book but that’s more because the book sucked than the movie was really great.

The Enola Holmes movie! I haven’t fully read the first book but they made the movie so fun compared to the sort of stuffy olden day writing style that the author purposely employed in that book. I still need to watch the second movie to see if it’s as good as the first.

And lastly The Mortal Instruments (shadowhunters) movie. The books were good at the start of the series to be fair, I just really liked Lily Collins and Jamie whatshisfaces chemistry and the main protagonists. Plus I love Robert Sheehan and he was in that one. And yes I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I liked the movie more than the tv show!

What about you guys? Anyone got any movies they like more than the books?

message 26: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Mae (patriciaflair) | 161 comments Me! But only the School for Good and Evil😅😅I also watch the movie Harry Potter and I'm planning to watch all the movies of it:)

The School For Good and Evil movie adaptation is nice. But only in my opinion, it was partly based on the book. Like the characters in the book, the settings, the plot, and so on. The movie kept me intrigued and I want to watch the movie again. I hope the producers, make a movie again but based on book 2 of the book:)

message 27: by CraftyChara (last edited Jun 05, 2023 08:06AM) (new)

CraftyChara | 423 comments I also like Movie of The Give, Ender's game And Maze Runner more than the book😁

I haven't seen Enola Holmes (I don't have Netflix) I'll watch anything that has Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin in it. Speaking of Claflin. I love Me Before You movie more than the book. The book had sequels that just didn't need to be made.
Devil wears Prada and The prestige were also better movies than the book!

This Listopia is great for what were talking about
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

P.S. Do you think that watching a movie first affects how much you'll like the book? Or vise versa?

message 28: by AurorainBookland (new)

AurorainBookland | 707 comments no. I try to read the book since that was first but I view the book and movie as separate so I can usually enjoy both. unless the movie goes dark or super violent etc. Example most Artemis Fowl fans hated the movie but I enjoyed it, making Artemis more like a typical kid was cool, wish they showed his room more the set designers had some cool Lego and K'nex builds but you barely get to see them!

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 446 comments I like Field of Dreams better than its book (Shoeless Joe).
Ella Enchanted I liked the movie better.
Warm Bodies the movie was better.
Shutter Island also.

I want to watch Warm Bodies! Also I finally watched Shutter Island at the start of the year albeit in bits like I caught the end when it was playing on the tv channel and then I went back and watched the beginning but I watched it all and it’s such a smart movie!

Sadly no, I think that doesn’t really fit the spirit of the challenge if you get me. You can still read it if you like but it wouldn’t be part of your title chain. Or maybe you can read a different book inbetween to link it back into the chain. Hope it works out for you either way!

I'm almost halfway through Beastly so I'm feeling optimistic about maybe getting my chain to be 3 or 5 books long by the end of the month!

Also I just spent the whole afternoon figuring out one formula for the August reading challenge spreadsheet and I made it work so I think we're going to have a lot of fun with the new elements this year!👏🏻

@Gale better late than never! Hope you enjoy it😊

@Patricia I think it was on a book list for one of our previous readathons. I can’t remember who recommended it but I remember me and Aurora talked about it.

Also that book has a really gorgeous cover. I got a copy back then for that event but never ended up reading it.

I think it’s like 400 pages or more. I’m such a lazy reader nowadays lol. If a book is more than 300 pages I’m immediately discouraged. Even 300 seems like a stretch, I prefer between 200 & 250.

I know it’s all in my head though because you can read a really boring 200 page book in the same time it takes you to read an interesting 400 page book but I can’t help it, I always have to look at the page length before I consider reading a book. And more often than not if it’s longer than 300 pages I’ll either not start it altogether or end up DNFing it after trying to get through it for some time.

Yes I am😂 it’s the same for everything not just books actually. If a tv show has 6 episodes I’m more likely to watch it than if it has several seasons.
Same with comics, manga, anime. I have commitment issues ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
