Read it many many years ago, more than 10 years ago. It's about some people who got lost in some jungle and were traveling along the river. They saw early humans and then some weird tadpoles in the river that turn into humans along the river. And lastly they saw that the tadpoles came from humans? Sorry my memory is fuzzy

Ok, so not quite what you remember, but Amy Thomson's The Color of Distance from 1995 has a human exploring an alien planet that has rivers and forests. The arboreal alien population begins their life as tadpoles.

Ok, now I’m wondering if it’s one of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, like The Land That Time Forgot Collection, or The People That Time Forgot, where - strangely - tadpoles are part of the Caspak life cycle.
