... | 274 comments No problem! I've noticed almost no one mentions that both Little Mushroom and Golden Terrace from Seven Seas are getting new translations from different translators and it won't be just reprints of what PFH published, but I think that's a very important thing to say up front instead of just recommending to buy the new edition blindly. A lot of readers wanted the PFH translations, so I would rather no one gets the mistaken idea that they will be getting it from Seven Seas.
In either case I hope you can get the books with the translation you like.

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments I did say Seven Seas “version”, by which I meant their new translation, but I suppose that I shouldn’t have assumed that it was common knowledge that Seven Seas is doing their own translation. I will be sure to state more clearly in the future that it is a new translation and not the same one done by E. Danglars.

The main reason that I typically suggest waiting for Seven Seas translation is because a lot of people can’t afford to pay the outrageous prices for the PFH version and the likelihood of getting scammed into buying a fake copy is very high. Most copies that I see on eBay are fake and I’ve seen many people disappointed after receiving low quality fakes. From what I’ve heard, a lot of the fake copies also don’t even have the translation by E. Danglars but a fan translation instead that isn’t very high quality.

... | 274 comments I know... It even says in their license announcements that translations will be new, but unfortunately it's a very common assumption that it's the old translation, either that or readers "don't know if it's new or not". I don't know why but this line of thinking is a common sight in comments everywhere. Maybe it partially stems from casual readers not being very familiar with publishing and licensing and they assume it's just a reprint and not an entirely new edition.

I agree about the prices, but where translation matters to someone, they will even pay more to get the edition they want. I know for some readers it doesn't matter and they're ok with something "as long as it's readable and in English", but for me it matters for example.

But some real PFH copies are still being sold, especially when new edition is coming out, so it's always worth checking. I saw them even being sold for normal prices. But I also suggest caution, look for comparison threads on socials, check official copies photos, even better when you have them in hands, and always ask for photos of the outside and inside the book, best with a paper next to each photo stating the date of the photo for example, so that someone won't just find photos of the official edition to scam you with.

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments Very true. I guess since, like you said, it was clearly stated in Seven Seas licensing announcement that it would be a new translation, I just assumed most people would know about it. I don’t spend a lot of time in fan spaces so I wasn’t aware of the confusion. Next time I’ll be sure to mention that it is a new translation, that way people can make their own informed decision about which copy they want to buy.

I can understand why the translation would be more important to some people and also why to others it might be more important to pay a cheaper price and have more security in getting an official product. It is true that prices for the PFH copies seem to be coming down. It’s hard to tell without closely examining the sold listings to see how many are actually official though. I guess I just worry that prices are coming down because fakes are more readily available and people assume that they are official. I suppose even if that is the case though an official copy might go under the radar allowing someone who knows what they’re looking for to get a better price.

I must admit that I’ve only ever personally read Suika’s translation of MDZS. I’ve heard a lot of negative things about that translation, but I personally never had a problem with it. That may be because I don’t speak Chinese and I’ve also never read the Exiled Rebels translation though.

Teté :°) (tetera) | 15 comments Translation isn't that big of a deal to me bc if it comes down to it, I'll just buy an untranslated version as well! I enjoy comparing og text w diff translations as a hobby mostly, so I'm not rlly that snobbish or picky abt it. I did read (and also assumed,bc of copyright n stuff like that) the 7S announcement on their translation being a new one, but I didn't know who they'd gotten up to. I guess that could influence expectations a bit tho, so i'll wait to see how the final release is welcomed and hold off for now

message 157: by Teté :°) (new)

Teté :°) (tetera) | 15 comments getting my hands on the pfh version seems kinda hard rn for me tho! so i'll probably end up getting a 7s copy regardless of the trl quality just cuz the story is so dear to me and comparing it to the og just as a nerdy shenanigan tbh

Teté :°) (tetera) | 15 comments regardless, this was v insightful! again, ty both, it's always fun to read diff opinions on matters like this

... | 274 comments You're very welcome! I have all of PFH's editions because I'm an old time reader who was around when they were still operating so my POV is also special: already having these books just makes me 1000% more picky about the new editions, the translations will have to be reallyyyyy outstanding to make me spend this money twice. 😂

message 160: by thedeadlyscimitar (new)

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments Happy to help! I also own the PFH editions and I do love those versions too. It will certainly be difficult for Seven Seas to compete. I must admit though that I love the story of Golden Terrace enough that if the Seven Seas version has a beautiful cover with nice interior art I might buy it anyway 😅 I will never sell my original PFH copies though because I love that translation.

message 161: by ... (new)

... | 274 comments I'm in the same boat but with Little Mushroom. I'm picky about art so if I don't like it, I won't even look at the translation. But if I like the art, the translation will have to live up to PFH one at least. This would even be my third time potentially paying for the novel, because I bought it both in paperback and ebook. Maybe if they made it hardcover or added french flaps back to the paperbacks, I would be more willing to consider it. Without the flaps, their paperbacks aren't better in quality than PFH volumes, so it's kind of a waste of money for me.

message 162: by thedeadlyscimitar (new)

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments Yeah, considering I’m more than happy with the translation that I have from PFH, the artwork would have to be really good for me to want to buy it again. The one thing that I wasn’t crazy about with PFH’s versions for both Golden Terrace and Little Mushroom was the cover art. I do think Golden Terrace’s artwork is pretty in a way but I find it a bit boring personally. As for Little Mushroom, the PFH cover is a little too cartoony for my tastes and it makes the characters look like they’re about thirteen years old 😅 I’d prefer something that looks more like the art style from the manhua. For example, I thought the French covers for Little Mushroom were gorgeous!

... | 274 comments See I didn't like the French covers for Little Mushroom 😅. While I don't like the PFH covers for it, I still prefer them over the French ones. So if we get new covers similar to French ones I won't buy it for sure. Seven Seas is a hit or miss with covers... Some are pretty and mature, but some are giving off rather juvenile vibes, and I'm just worried they'll go with the juvenile feel with Little Mushroom.

message 164: by thedeadlyscimitar (new)

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments Well, I guess that art is very much a matter of personal preference lol. But I completely agree that I hope Seven Seas doesn’t make the covers look too juvenile. For example, I don’t hate the original Seven Seas covers for MDZS but they are a little too juvenile for my tastes. The new hardcover versions with artwork by ruthie are much better in my opinion.

The Wanderer of Literature | 4 comments I am just super excited that I finally have the chance to own a physical copy of Little Mushroom since I wasn't as interested in looking into Little Mushroom before PFH shutdown, gosh I regret it so much.

Cee (simplystrange) | 68 comments My order of Global Examination vol. 1 and You're Too OP! have been shipped! I'm so excited to read both of these! 😆😆 I keep checking the tracking number hoping it'll somehow make the transit vehicles move faster haha.

message 167: by thedeadlyscimitar (new)

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments I definitely know the feeling! It’s so exciting when you get an order like that shipped, especially for Rosmei books. I order mine through yiggybean, so they can take a really long time to I never know when they’re going to ship, so when they do I get ultra excited! That’s so cool that your books have shipped!

message 168: by Cee (new)

Cee (simplystrange) | 68 comments Yes, this is my second Yiggybean order ^_^. I plan on reading one of them as soon as it arrives haha.

Na Lin | 6 comments Is anyone thts in the U.S atm worry about future shipments from rosmei/ Yiggybean bean? 🥲 I'm quite worry we won't be able to receive any books that's shipping soon

message 171: by Katie❄️ (new)

Katie❄️ (theicequeen) | 268 comments Yeah, that is a concern.... I think so far YB said Rosmei has been picking up any tariffs but now everything has become even more complicated........

message 172: by Na (new)

Na Lin | 6 comments It's one thing picking up the tariffs but another if items will even be shipped. I saw on reddit and it seems Singapore stopped all shipments to the u.s. so hopefully we hear some news from Yiggybean 😭

thedeadlyscimitar | 130 comments This is extremely concerning. I’m going to be so upset if this affects yiggybean orders and prevents us from getting Rosmei books in the US 😭💔
