It is not often I see Danmei with such interesting dystopian setting while still having strong characters and relations. I agree it was entertaining.

OMG! I loved Remnants of Filth. It was so great. I can't wait for the next volume. The pain of waiting - agony.

Kai (oceanandspring) On the topic I had previously mentioned in the 'DANMEI' discussion section about non permanent annotation methods I have found some interesting solutions! Another user had of course recommended coloured stick on tabs. This is of course a wonderful method to mark pages in our novels. I have found a few other methods of non permanent annotations! You can use these clear sticky notes that you can place in pages and write over. I have also found out about something called 'highlighter tape' which is tape that is coloured but translucent! So I suppose that is three methods! Page tabs, clear sticky notes, and highlighter tape.

Lenny, It's not like other Danmei's I've read so far. General Mo has got such conflict going on. The poor man suffers. I thought it was good and I so appreciate that most of it takes place in a pleasure house. I can't wait to read more of this.

Angel, wow, this sounds like a great book if it's one of your favorites. I will have to see if I can find it too. We need more English Translations of Danmei. They simply aren't fast enough for me.

I think I must be really dumb. I just realized that Nan Feng and Fu Yao are in all actuality Feng Xin and Mu Quin. Like how the Wind Master can change genders but is still the same person.... I seriously thought that but dismissed it but it has GOT to be true.

message 26: by Katie❄️ (new)

Katie❄️ (theicequeen) | 268 comments That is very true. The heartbreak of ROF is heart squeezing. I've only read book one and plan to continue but you can tell just from that first book how desperate things will be.

The hardcover editions look pretty but readers need to be very dedicated if they are willing to invest in them just for the aesthetic value. I'm fine with the paperback edtions :-)

I already have space issues. I like the paperbacks. I don't plan on buying them again.

Laura | 42 comments I might do half and half paperback n hardcover. I never bought the rest of tgcf so I only have the first one. Granted I didn't know book companies print hardcovers first and then paper. I'm wondering why they did it backwards. Price constraints?

Historically, publishers have published hardcover books first at a higher price point and then the paperbacks at a cheaper price later on. Here it seems to have been done the otherway around. I think it is because interested readers will buy the hardcover book at full price but it is possible to entice other types of readers later on if the books are less expensive.

Seven seas used to release translated light novels and mangas which usually gets published on a paperback. then they licensed danmeis and so on,, that's why they released the paperbacks first before the hardcovers bc they rarely print out hardcovers. It's like the hardcover version of the books are their own version of special editions

I gave storygraph a real try. I used it for a year. Their statistics are great fun but overall, I found the site very lacking and I much prefer Goodreads. I wish they have more statistics, but Storygraph is not for me.

Ive been using it during its early development and coming from my perspective they still had a long way to go… I just find myself using storygraph nowadays bc of its streak feature and it actually motivates me to read everyday. One thing I disliked about it is the lack of interaction in reviews and reading updates. It feels dead to me. The statistics and graphs aren’t anything spectacular imo. The book club feature recently came out and I was just wondering if we do have a community on there haha

Is the group bookshelf for official English translations only? Or can we make suggestions that are only available online via fanslation, if they have a Goodreads listing?

There are a few that haven't been picked up yet that I'd love to recommend for it if we are allowed :3

If books have a GoodReads listing, then it should be OK to create a special shelf for fan translated work. As far as I can see, you can create a new bookshelf when you add a book.

So why not give it a go? You seem to know what you are talking about :-)

I hope it's okay because I love to read and recommend fan translations. I just make sure to support the author when/if the book does finally get an official English translation. Would love to hear what you recommend!

message 44: by Sollenbum (new)

As long as we are supporting the publishing industry financially with our purchase of official publications, then I don’t see why we can’t also support amateur translations. And I mean “amateur” in both senses: first, someone who translates for the love of it and second, someone who does it without asking for financial recompense.

So far, I am fairly new on my danmei journey, so I haven’t yet read anything that hasn’t been officially published. Would, however, do so if no copyright issues are breached.

Look forward to what you post…

NiaKantorka (kantorka) | 85 comments Has anyone read Everyone Loves the Cannon Fodder? I’m not sure about contemporary danmei (out of a crime/detective setting) but the blurb sounds like fun. Same question for Kaleidoscope of Death but here I haven’t got a good idea what to expect from the blurb.

I’m asking because preordering Rosmei books in Europe is a bit of a challenge.

I wish they would release them as ebooks too. That would make buying them so much easier but afaik they haven’t purchased the rights to do so.

Where do you buy Rosmei books in Europe? I have ordered some from UNNE in Germany, but they haven't arrived yet. There were two titles that were pre-order books, so perhaps they don't send them until they are all ready? I had thought they would send the published books first and then send the pre-ordered books later... I have plenty to read at the moment, so it's fine, but is still a little odd.

Oh, by the way ... I forgot to write that I obviously haven't read them either for the same reason as you. So I would also be interested in hearing what others think 😊

message 48: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Dumas | 5 comments I recently finished Guardian book 1 by Priest, and noticed the line, "didn't know whether to laugh or cry," which I have also seen in Mo Xiang Tong Xiu novels.

Is this a Danmei thing? Or was that just a coincidence? I though she was the one that used it has her signature phrase.

message 49: by Katie❄️ (new)

Katie❄️ (theicequeen) | 268 comments I feel like that is a frequent Chinese expression or translation maybe? I’ve seen it in various danmei. Not just Priests work.

message 50: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 170 comments Mod
It has been in almost every danmei I’ve read haha. I love the different variations. The book I’m reading now is using “caught between laughing and crying” a lot 😆
