When You’re Not Reading a Cozy
PamG wrote: "Here is my 4.18 rounded to 4 stars review of Murder by Lamplight

A lot of historical mysteries are cozies. This one wasn't, but I wasn't expecting it to be based on some reviews I had read.
My review for
The Clairvoyant's Glasses: Time Has a Shadow by Helen Goltzhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished an engaging mystery set in Vienna in late 18th century. It could be even considered a cozy mystery since there's no brutal scenes, no sex and no dirty language and the atmosphere is cozy, but out of caution I place it in this section.
The Figaro Murders
by Laura Lebow Here is my 5 stars review :
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I finished Switchboard Soldiers
by Jennifer Chiaverini. My favorite book of the year. Set in 1918, the women who were switchboard operators in the US sign up with military and go to France to handle the switchboards during WWI. Excellent research and characters are well written.
Here is my 3.84 rounded to 4 stars review of The Deepest Kill by Lisa Black:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Crime Thriller
Overall, this was a story that demanded my attention throughout the book. Those who enjoy the analytical and scientific side of mysteries will likely enjoy this novel with its intriguing and engrossing mystery along with well-developed characters.
I read Quieter than Sleep. It was a good a start to a series that is new to me. It had a cozy feel, but there was some language.
Here is my 4.61 rounded to 5 stars review of The Boy Who Cried Bear

Complex story blending murder, cold case disappearances, and amnesia with family, friendship, and much more.
Here is my 3.86 rounded to 4 stars review of Village in the Dark
by Iris Yamashita:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Mystery / Suspense
2nd book in the series
Diverse and memorable characters
Atmospheric mystery
Overall, this story is gripping, thought-provoking, and emotional, with great world-building.
I'm starting out the week with
The Secrets We Keep by Liz Milliron https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my 3.98 rounded to 4 stars review of The Spy and I
by Tiana Smith:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Romantic Comedy and Suspense / Espionage
Fast-paced, great characterization, sold action and thrills, humor, twisty plot
Here is my 3.23 rounded to 3 stars review of Nowhere Like Home
by Sara Shepard:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Psychological Drama / Crime Novel
Thought-provoking
Plenty of angst and suspense
I wanted the main character to be stronger.
The writing style with many flashback scenes isn't my preferred style.
Heather L wrote: "Finished The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang last night and quite enjoyed it."I loved that book. The enjoyed the second one in the series too.
Just read a cozy non-mystery,
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. (This has a Cozy Mystery tag on Goodreads, but it's really not. Probably because they don't have Cozy Fantasy.)My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole this evening. Though it is said to be the “original” Gothic novel, it reads more like a parody of the genre. Though far from a five-star book, it was still interesting read.

When not reading cozies, I'm reading romance. Recently got pulled in by a story description and have been working my way through Alexia Chase's Sinful World series. There are at least 14 series associated with the "world." I'm working my way through the ones I have access to.The stories are pretty similar. Shorter ones have been single POV, first from the heroine's; the following story (next-in-series) from the hero's. A lot of the text for the twinned books is the same, differences stemming only from the actual thoughts of the "POV-er" of the story. Longer stories combine POVs, exchanging at chapters. They've been covering the gamut of tropes from instalust/love to BFF's little sister or older brother to second-chance/re-dos, etc. They're not great reads (really, mostly 2-3, a few better), but most have been enjoyable.
I finished a complicated but also engaging mystery set in 18th century Venice, fascinating and mysterious city where vices and secrets were very well hidden under the masks.Scherzo: Murder and Mystery in 18th Century Venice
by Jim WilliamsHere is my 4 stars review :

Here is my 4 star review of Killing Time by Cindy Gerard:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Romantic suspense
Here is my 4.34 rounded to 4 stars review of Leopard's Hunt
by Christine Feehan:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Paranormal Romantic Suspense
Overall, this action-packed paranormal romantic suspense story has great characterization and pulls on the heart strings. It looks at a variety of types of relationships.
Here is my 4.25 rounded to 4 stars review o
f Exit Black by Joe Pitkin:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Overall, this is an action-packed science fiction thriller that is also thought-provoking with complex characters and plenty of angst and suspense.
I listened to Parable of the Talents and it was as good as the first book, Parable of the Sower. Both these books were 5 star reads.
Here is my 4.5 rounded to 5 stars review of Leave No Trace by A.J. Landau (pseudonym for authors Jon Land and Jeff Ayers):https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Political / Action Thriller
Gritty, intense, and chilling story with non-stop action
This is the first book in a new series.
Here is my 4.25 rounded to 4 stars review of
Missing Before Daylight by Carolyn Arnold:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Police Procedural / Crime Thriller
10th book in the series
The book has solid police investigation and good character development.
I recently finished a delightful middle grade mystery/spy book
Mission Manhattan by James Ponti https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've been reading a lot of non-cozies lately. In the last week I finished A Man Called Ove
by Fredrik Backman, A Pho Love Story
by Loan Le and The Son's Secret
by Daryl Wood Gerber. I am currently reading South of the Buttonwood Tree
by Heather Webber.
Here is my 3.87 rounded to 4 stars review of The American Daughters
by Maurice Carlos Ruffin:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Historical Fiction / Coming-of-age
Gritty and Compelling
Key Point: The story line spends a significant portion of it depicting Ady in her childhood. While this helps readers understand Ady, the book synopsis indicated to me that it would mainly be about her activities with the Daughters.
