Confessions (Brantley Walker Off the Books #7) by Nicole Edwards
Confessions Nicole Edwards
Qualification: Brantley Walker: Off the Books #7
Finished: 4/15/23
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This book continues on after the cliffhanger in the previous book that was so shocking. Reese is healing but has remained in Dallas for six months. Brantley has gone back home brokenhearted. Reese has now come back trying to figure out how to get back with Brantley. Magnus is now under investigation for the disappearance of his friend, Ava. The team gets into this case to try and find her. A lot goes on in this book with all the characters. It's really important to read this series in order as it is a continuing story. Loved this one.

Hemlocked and Loaded (Spellbound, #9) by Annabel Chase
Title: Hemlocked and Loaded
Author: Annabel Chase
How It Qualifies: Book 9 in the Spellbound series
Date Finished: April 15, 2023
Rating: 4 stars
Review:

Hmmm, this 9th book was interesting. The mystery itself was solvable immediately, but the sudden turnaround of several of Emma’s friends pointing out that perhaps Daniel was not the man for her piqued my interest. Now, I know this is a romance series and the chance of Daniel and Emma not having a happy ever after at this point is about 2%, but imagine how cool it would be to turn the trope on its head like that. I’d love it if Daniel ended up somehow responsible for the curse! Ah, I know that even thinking that way is setting myself up for disappointment in the next and final book, but a girl can dream. And anyway, if there’s not an end point to it, having those doubts raised will just end up being bad writing. *nods*

Review:
I love a cruise ship mystery! Charlotte Holmes is in hiding from Moriarty. But when the crown asks her to retrieve a dossier, she and Ingram board the RMS Provence. Charlotte’s mother arrives unexpectedly. I don’t remember much about Charlotte’s mother, but she was a hoot in this book, a cranky and obnoxious proper English lady. After a murder occurs, an investigation begins. Charlotte, who is on board incognito, has to help to reveal the real murderer. An entertaining read!

Geri | 745 comments OK. Our last dice roll was 6 (4+2) so we are at spot 103. You can read a series 1 or 3 or standalone. I think that’s right? Alternate option is Debut Novel or Debut Author.

It was so fun doing this challenge with everyone!

Review:
A dark, seductive psychological thriller. Dr. Gwen Moore was a psychiatrist that treated patients with violent tendencies. She is recruited to write a psychological profile for a man accused of being the BH serial killer. The man’s lawyer, Robert Kevin, was the grieving father of one of the killer’s victims, and convinced the man accused was innocent. I enjoyed the cat and mouse game. And all the discussion about psychopathy was also interesting. There were surprising twists at the end. A really good read!

Skyhunter (Skyhunter, #1) by Marie Lu
Title: Skyhunter
Author: Marie Lu
How It Qualifies: Book 1 of the Skyhunter series
Date Finished: April 23, 2023
Rating: 5 stars
Review:

As an evil empire sweeps across the continent, Mara is the last surviving outpost fighting against the Federation invaders. However, only the natural born Marans are allowed to live with dignity behind the city’s walls; refugees huddle in shacks on its borders. The story follows a refugee who managed to make it into the elite ranks of Strikers, the warriors who fight off the attacking Ghosts, zombie-like creatures under the control of the enemy. Talin rescues a Federation escapee and together with her friends, they may have found a way to end the war for good.

This was a fun and rousing novel. The Strikers struggle with built-in animosity toward the Federation; the refugees find it hard to trust Strikers or Marans. In this backdrop secrets are discovered and connections are formed. I love the found family trope and this book has it in spades. There’s some great adventure and well-written action scenes, and I loved all the characters (though I realllly need more Jeran and Aramin.)

Yes, you do have to hand-wave some of the plot points a little (Adena is really a miracle worker with her mad science skillz) but I can happily do that when I’m on a rollicking ride like this one. This is the first book of two so it does end on a cliffhanger, and I’m eager to get to the sequel. Hopefully soon!

**

Thanks again to everyone on the team. It was fun reading with you!

Review: I always love this author's books. This one is no exception. Chloe finds her mother killed and is now running from her killers. She sees an ad looking for a tutor in a local paper. What follows is how she and Nikolai find each other. There are many issues in this story. Nikolai, his brothers and his sister and of course, Chloe. This book does have a cliffhanger.
