Academ's Fury (Codex Alera, #2) by Jim Butcher
Book: Academ's Fury
Author: Jim Butcher
Pages: 702
How it fits: Codex Alera #2
Date read: 3/22/23
Rating: 5 stars

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Codex Alera series. Two years have transpired since the end of the first book and MC Tavi is now 17 years old, a student at the Academy and page to the First Lord, ruler of the country. But in reality, Tavi is being secretly trained to be a cursor or spy for the First Lord. There are still the political factions involved in trying to overthrow the First Lord. And also threats from some weird, evil body snatcher creatures. A lot of action and battles. A great cast of characters and a lot of fun. Can't wait to see what book 3 holds.

Review: Miller is a FTM transgender construction worker with ADHD of the hyper energy kind. Demetri is a bear of a college history professor specializing in The history of the Roman Empire. Something about these two click. Even with Demetri's lack of Confidence in Sexual behavior because His Exes all called him terrible in bed. He is cute and doesn't realize people, are flirting with him. The deck pic contest is hilarious especially since newcomers interpret it as dick pics contest. Demetri is the professor that loves his subject and bring it to life.

Really romantic.
Class-gap, found family, art.
Insta-love done right.

I rounded up because it's a novella, and I think one should lower expectations with those. Way, way too insta-lovey, but at least it was acknowledged, and the MCs as well as a few side characters were solid. And it's been on my TBR 4-eva, so I'm glad to have read it.

How it fits: Aloysius Pendergast #6
Date read: 3/25/23
Rating: 4 stars

Review: This book continues the story from the cliffhanger in the previous book. MC Aloysius Pendergast's insane younger brother, Diogenes, is out to destroy him by killing the people closest to him and then framing him for the crimes. Diogenes is one sick and extremely creepy individual, and he hates his brother. He also has an IQ of 210. This is a really good cat and mouse book. Can't wait to read the next which continues this story.

Review: Super cute story with 2 professors and their NB student. Carter took a while to get his head out of his ass but I liked that the other 2 didn't wait around for him. They were determined to build a relationship with or without Carter. So it was up to him to catch up. Luckily he did. The entire series has been enjoyable even though I've read them all out of order.

Why was this so long?
Great characters, super reps,
but repetitious.
(AF)

So much of this was really good--I like all the characters. As always with Zabo, the spectrum sexuality representation was good. The balance between hockey and friends and family was solid. I thought the discussion of alcoholism was thoughtful. But holy editing, Batman! This needed about 160 pages of "I love him but he'll never love me" and "I don't deserve him or love or happiness of any kind" and "I am responsible for everything" just cut right out. Way, way, way too repetitive. When the MCs finally got together, we still had 200 pages left, and the only thing unresolved was...when they'd decide to get married (okay, also some parental drama, but not 200 pages worth).

Review: My guilty pleasure is middle grade fantasy series (if they're not too juvenile). You can blame Harry Potter and J. K. Rowling. This is the last book in the Septimus Heap series, and a really good series it is. The characters are fun and in a 7-book series, you get to know them pretty well. Ms. Sage ends things in a very satisfying manner, making you sad that the story is over.

Review: Damien come back from being believed dead and now someone wants him to be dead for real. A lot of good cameos from people we already met in Sinner's Gin. Miki and Damien together is a riot. There is a lot of humor in the lyrics snippet that lead the chapters and the absurdity of grown big muscular cops being afraid of tiny fey Brigid are some of the strong tongue in cheek humor seen throughout the book. Sionn is a former bodyguard who now own the bar where Damien busk while trying to find Miki St John Lead singer of the Band Sinner's Gin and Damian's best friend. When the threat to life of some of their own are at stake the Morgan Clan Comes together with all their friends and allies.

Review: Tim Paige does a great job narrating this story. I usually enjoy the best friend's brother trope but I wish they didn't always keep their relationship secret from the best friend/brother. That seems to be the running theme tho. Then when they finally find out it's always such a scene 🙄. I don't get why it's such a big deal. But I do love the former playboy turned monogamous boyfriend trope. This book did that well. Final rating 4.5 stars

Review: This was the concluding book of the story of Diogenes, the brother of MC Aloysius Pendergast. Diogenes has successfully framed his brother for several murders, but the story continues as this was not the end of his insane plans. Meanwhile the MC is in a high-security prison awaiting trial for murder. However, his friends plot how to break him out knowing that he is the only one who can stop Diogenes. Very suspenseful book with great characters.
