Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments This is all great team!

So just A book whose title starts with a letter in the word FAMILY plus 2 booksmarks left until we're done with round one!

This is where the bookmarks are going to start to slow us down, so don't worry if books don't fit prompts, just make sure to log the pages.

I've got two books on the go that I'm hoping to finish by tomorrow (ambitious plan, so we'll see ... )
Reading: Florida Woman because it looked like a quick easy read.
Listening: Skulduggery Pleasant

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments @ Edie - I didn't know that about "Laydown Tuesdays" I will have to check that out. Thanks.

message 103: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments 114 pages tonight to finish off The Overnight Guest. It's currently close to 1 am and I have work in the morning, so can't go through the spreadsheet now, but I'll try to remember to come back to it after work tomorrow.

message 104: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments @Rachel-aweome! If only work didn't get in the way, right?!

I got a bit derailed last night. A friend reminded me it was "National Peanut day" (LOL) so I gave up a bit of my planned reading time to make a app and desert (fresh rolls with peanut sauce & chocolate Peanut butter cookies) to go with dinner.

So I didn't read much, but I listened a LOT while I was cooking and cleaning last night. Only a couple hours to go on Skulduggery (MG/YA so it's very easy to listen to).

And I'm about a third of the way through Florida Woman which can count as F for Family if needed .. should be able to finish it tonight. Its a quick/easy read but pretty bad. Looking forward to getting it done and moving on

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments DAY 5 - Super great reading team!!
Half way through the readathon and we have only one prompt to go for round #1 Family: A book whose title starts with a letter in the word FAMILY and we already have the bookmarks we need!!

message 106: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Good morning all!! I'm cruising through Legends & Lattes and should finish by the end of the day (hoping to take advantage of lunch break). It could work for the remaining prompt but also works for others if someone else finishes sooner.

@Sheena love your Peanut Day detour!!! The treats sound amazing!!

message 107: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Hi All, I got up early today, not on purpose, & finished Women Talking. I used it under family - a book with a large family. It will work for a few prompts under family but this prompt had the least options. As always it can be moved where needed. I have no idea what I'm reading next. I will look at the spreadsheet soon. The plan today is to read. Dinner is in the crock pot & it's raining.
I'm very excited to have 2 bookmarks. When I went to bed last night we had 0. This morning we had 2. We are fast readers.

That sounds like the best day!! We're getting a dumping of snow here. I woke up to a clean car but by the time I left for work it was completely covered. And another 15cm/6 inch supposedly coming throughout the day/night. But at least its's pretty snow - huge big flakes sticking all along the tops of tree branches. I'm looking forward to going home and snuggling in with a book and blanket and a big glass of wine after work!!

message 109: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments My next read is The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury. I wanted to start a book I owned or could borrow. I'm not sure if it will work for a lot of prompts but will know more once I start reading.

message 110: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments Wow, we're at the halfway point and doing great!

I'm back to reading Sad Cypress and hope to finish today or by latest tomorrow.

I'd finished With the Fire on High and slotted it for food on the cover. I've been listening to The Proposal which one of the main characters is a doctor so it would work for the nurse/doctor/hospital prompt. But the books starts off with an unwanted public proposal at baseball game, and there's even a baseball on the cover - would it be a stretch to consider this involving sport? Oh another main character attends a self-defense class at a gym, is that sporty enough?

@Sherri - Love dinner is in the crockpot and you can forget all about it. Yay for a day of reading!

@Sheena - Ugh on the snow. Enjoy your wine and snuggling with a book. Sounds delightful!

Here's to a great day of reading, everyone!

Yes, I think that works! The mods generally aren't to picky about loose/creative prompt interpretations during readathons. And I think a baseball game/ball on cover and self defense qualify all qualify as involving sports.

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments CONGRATS TEAM JANVIER
We're finished round 1 !

4 days left ... can we finish a second round??

message 113: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I bet we can finish round 2. If not we will have fun trying. Congratulations team on finishing round 1.

message 116: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments I'm really trying to get my individual challenge done too, so I'm going to try really hard to finish several more books ... going to read more now and look at the sheet/plans tomorrow :D

Seriously! Lol there is a very, very slim possibility of a snow day tomorrow, but that would mean a Zoom day so I guess that doesn't necessarily mean more reading time

message 118: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments I finished Sad Cypress which I put in the nurse/doctor prompt and The Proposal which I put for the sport prompt. I fiddled a little with the color coding on the spreadsheet. I hope I did more help than harm. Please fix if I messed up anything.

I'm starting Nineteen Eighty-Four which will just go for pages since I'm unlikely to finish by Sunday. I'm also going back to reading An Arrow to the Moon.

It'll be fun to see what we can pull off!

message 119: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments I ended up reading all of Several People Are Typing tonight. Page count is a little hard to assess since I had an ebook version from the library that didn't really show page numbers, but the Goodreads pages shows 256 pages so I'll go with that

message 120: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning All. Rachel I do that too. When the ebook doesn't have a page count I see what Goodreads or Amazon has as the page count.
I might finish The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury later tonight, maybe. I'm having lunch with friends today so my afternoon is shot.
We are doing great. We are at the stage in the read-a-thon where we are grinding through the pages & not worrying about prompts so much. I like each phase. Have fun today.

message 121: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments @Jenn - Spreadsheet looks great! Thanks for the help keeping it pretty :D

@Rachel - I do this a lot too. And use the percentage read to calculate how many pages I've read. You'd think the ebook people could figure out a way to make it easier.

@ Enjoy your lunch!

I've got two books on the go and just added them to the spreadsheet.
Take a Hint, Dani Brown hits lots of prompt options
Atlas of the Heart is the GRC non-fiction winner and is classified as self help so it can go for that (our only possibility at the moment.

I'd like to read 3 more after than to finish my individual challenge. That seems like a LOT but I might try and look for some shorter options to swap out my original plans?!?

message 122: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I apologize for not checking in yesterday. I don't know where the day went and I didn't get to read a thing and Tuesday I only read 10 pages. I should get some reading in today.

You all are doing great!!!!!!!!!

message 123: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments My next books may be more for pages/ bookmarks with fewer prompt options. I have Babel, Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution which will be taken back from the library soon. Excited to read it though.

message 124: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments @ Joan - no worries at all. Everyone has different levels of participation and every page counts towards our goals so even 10 pages is great! The expected minimum check is 5 times throughout the entire challenge. We're a bit of chattier group than some for sure (which I LOVE and think is amazing and way more fun :D) but it's totally cool to pop in whenever you can.

The goal of the challenge is just to encourage you personally to read a bit more at whatever your pace is. They don't even announce any kind of winner or who finished or anything (this surprised me the first time) so as long a you did some reading and had some fun in the groups I think it's a win.

message 125: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments @Jen - I'm so curious about Babel! on my TBR too

message 126: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1148 comments I am hoping to finish at least one more book. Options for where to put it seem limited, but at least there will be pages to count. My reading this coming weekend will be minimal. Two young grandchildren will be with us, so time will be spend playing games and entertaining them. Perhaps some reading after their bedtimes!

The team is doing so well!

message 127: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments @Rachel, I usually go with what Goodreads has too. I go with Goodreads sometimes when my page count doesn't match too.

@Sherri, time spent with friends is always time well spent!

@Joan, hope it's been a good busy. All contributions big and small matter!

@Jen, I've heard great things about Babel. Hope you enjoy it!

@Edie, enjoy your time with the grandkids!

I'm in the middle of When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain which is a novella but I have no idea what and if it fits any prompts. At least it's short and go towards pages.

What a wonderful weekend plan, Edie! Enjoy!! And go ahead and log your book anyway with any prompts that you can find.

During the last day or so, I'm sure Sherri and I will try and swap things around a bit if we see an opportunity to check off some more resolutions. And of course, pages = bookmarks which are always needed.

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Spreadsheet Update
15 books to go for round #2 and 14 currently in progress. Sound like we might come close

A book involving camping/hiking/hunting
A book with a family gathering
A book with a character who has a physical illness/disability

Currently 1

A book with a large family
A book with characters too young to work
A book with a number in the title
A self-help book (financial or otherwise)

Currently 2
A book with a retired character
A book with a character who has a mental illness/disability
A book featuring a rich person
A book where a financial event is important (inheritance, bank failure, depression)

Currently 3+
A book with a family secret
A book where a character changes jobs

message 130: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments I finished When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain but didn't really see anywhere else it fit other than the death prompt. Soooo I moved my book, Sense and Sensibility, back to where I had it first under the rich person prompt. I hope I did it correctly. It got a little confusing changing the colors and numbers, and trying to make sure they were in the right column, lol.

I'm listening to The Postman Always Rings Twice, another short audiobook.

I have to admit, I'm completely lost with the spreadsheet. I don't understand what the numbers beside the titles in each tab mean. I thought the list cleared it up at first, but I'm not really sure what "Currently 0," "Currently 1," etc means either.

message 132: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I read 78 pages of The Last House on Needless Street. The book is pretty good. I should definitely be able to finish it up on Saturday.

message 133: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments I read 104 pages of Crazy Stupid Bromance and loving it so far! I might even be able to finish it tomorrow if I have enough time/focus to read.

Rachel Sheena's list is of prompts to be filled with the least number of options. "Currently 0" means there are 0 books in progress/TBR for those prompts. So for those of us, like me, that have no idea what book to read next her list gives us options.
On the planning spreadsheet under Done then the round #'s Sheena has her own tracking system for the books to help with cross referencing & keeping count of everything. I hope this helps. Sheena can explain this better I bet.

message 135: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning All, I finished The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury. I used it for money-a book where a financial event is important. There was an inheritance in the book. I started A Line in the World: A Year on the North Sea Coast. I have no idea where to put it until I get into it better. I'm hoping camping/hunting is in there but I don't know.

message 136: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Jenn - I decided to walk home from work yesterday (so I could listen while I walked ) so just getting to spreadsheet now. Looks great but I'll double check all the things.

Joan & Rachel - those books both look great!

Sherri - you're flying through the pages! Hope your lunch yesterday was fun!

message 137: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Good morning everyone! Just reading. I might push to finish my audio today so I can fit in one more before the end.

message 138: by Sheena (last edited Jan 27, 2023 06:09AM) (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments @Rachel & Sherri
RE: Spreadsheet & List

Yes, Sherri - you said it well that was exactly my intention with the list. You get me, LOL

You can totally ignore the numbers if you like; it just helps with spreadsheet maintenance. For those who are interested. There are always a few books that don't get added to the multiple sheets in quite the right the place or at all. I'm using the the numbers to cross reference them across the sheets and make sure everything is adding up. But please, just pretend they aren't there if you like, you really don't need to to anything with them at all.

And I would only add, read whatever you like and makes you happy. I personally like the added challenge of checking prompts off the list and slotting books in (like a puzzle, I love puzzles!!) so actively try and fill the most need ("currently 0:) books but it's your challenge so should do it however makes you happy.

ETA - if anyone has trouble spreadsheeting you're welcome to just post here in the thread and tell me to add books for you.

message 139: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments I typically only read one book (maybe two) at a time but readathons make me go all extra, lol

I really want to finish my individual challenge (as well as cross off some more for our team) so I've got three currently on the go.

I started Hench on audio yesterday. had the paper copy but found audio at library so have been listening in every spare moment to squeeze in more books.

Plus my GRC winner Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience is surprising interesting so far - defining all the emotions we feel but not just "sad" or "happy" things like freudenfreude

And Take a Hint, Dani Brown is about half done.

I have the house to myself tonight so planning on many pages after work! Have a great day team!

message 140: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1148 comments Completed Unashamed: Musings of a Fat, Black Muslim and there was a space for it under Health, character who has a mental illness/disability. This is a collection of essays which constitutes a memoir for Leah Vernon. One essay is devoted to her mental health issues and a number of other essays refer to her struggles with body image.

message 141: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Decoteau (kjdecoteau) | 31 comments I'm planning to finish The Change today and finish The House in the Cerulean Sea before this is over.

message 142: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Awesome Edie!

I'm currently listening to Hench on audio which features a character that is injured and then uses a cane. We can use that for physical disability and check off Health.

I'm hoping to finish today! It's 14 hours long but I started yesterday and I've increased the speed settings because the narrator is really s l o w . . .

message 143: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments That's great Kelly! I loved Cerulean Sea!

I don't have high hopes of accomplishing my plans but I'm going to attempt to finish my 3 books in progress today, and then read one Saturday and one Sunday .. but we'll see.

message 144: by JennH (last edited Jan 27, 2023 09:11PM) (new)

JennH | 564 comments I finished a bunch of books today. I ran out of room on the completed tab, so I haven't logged those in. I'm afraid of messing up the spreadsheet if I attempt to add columns....

I finished The Postman Always Rings Twice which I've penciled in for a 3rd death prompt bc I didn't see where else to put it.

I've also put An Arrow to the Moon in the too young to work prompt. I had considered possibly putting it in the family secret prompt but I was slightly confused by the spreadsheet. The Family tab has the family secret prompt open but the Completed tab shows it filled. So I'll leave that alone for now.

I've also finished/binged Heartstopper: Volume One, Heartstopper: Volume Two, and Heartstopper: Volume Three. Super cute graphic novel series which gave me a ton of pages. I would have read Heartstopper: Volume Four too, had my library had it. Only the first book seems to fit prompts - sports and music. But I just realized something... would the volume number be considered part of the title? If so, that might work??

message 145: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments I finished off Crazy Stupid Bromance tonight (241 pages read today!)

message 146: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning All. Two days left. Read-A-Thons always go too fast. I finished A Line in the World: A Year on the North Sea Coast last night. I'll use it for hunting/camping. When the author stayed in the family cabin there wasn't electricity or running water. That's close enough to camping for me. I started When We Believed in Mermaids last night. As usual I don't know where it fits. I'm sure it works for some of the family prompts but we may not need them. I won't finish today but I may tomorrow. I'll look at the spreadsheet now to see if I can figure out what's happening.

message 147: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Morning everyone :)
I'm snuggled in with coffee & books and happily reading.

I'll get my laptop out now and update too. Sherri, lmk if you want me to do anything with the sheet. we likely just need more tabs added because we've read SO much :)

message 148: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Hi. I added 5 columns to the completed tab. We can add more as needed. I think Family secret is in the wrong spot. I think it should be under a large family. I'll let Sheena lay eyes on it too. Thanks everyone.

message 149: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Good catch Sherri! I moved those around yesterday to fit in a book we didn't have a spot for (I cant remember what it was now, lol) and popped it into the wrong column. Correct now, Thanks!!

I finished Dani, have just a couple hours left on Hench (will finish today while cleaning out the fridge) and am about half way through Overnight Guest! I think I may actually be able to finish everything I planned! Woot

I'll update my reads and double check again ;)

message 150: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Good morning all! Finished Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America and used for changes jobs which is part of the point of the book. I didn't get far with Babel. It is really good but I just ran out of steam.
