Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Hi Team Janvier, I'm very excited to start the read-a-thon Saturday. I love that all the teams have the same name just different languages. I'm excited to be co-captain with Sheena. I have been on her team twice before & she is a great captain. I'm currently reading Lessons in Chemistry which I will finish tomorrow. I saw a few places where it will fit. I also plan to start Verity later today.

message 3: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Hi all, excited to join for the Readathon. I started Olga Dies Dreaming and The Last Romantics yesterday. I should have more than 100 pages of each tomorrow. The Last Romantics fit almost the prompts for Health and Family.

message 4: by Sheena (last edited Jan 20, 2023 08:21AM) (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Yay!! Hi Team, so exited to get started reading with everyone.
So great to be on your team again, Sherri!! And Jen again too!!

I'm heading over to have a look at the spreadsheet and make some plans.

I was hoping to have The Sentence finished by now, but since I still have a bunch of pages left I think I might leave it to finish tomorrow and maybe start something else tonight for a little head start ;)

message 5: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments I added everyone's names onto the bookmark tracker on the spreadsheet so it's all ready to go for your daily tracking starting tomorrow.

Please go ahead and add any books you think you'll finish this week to the plans tab. I have a pile of books as maybes and am happy to try and fill in any prompts that we're short on so we can attempt to check off all the 'resolutions' :D

If anyone needs any help with spreadsheet or where a book fits just let us know.

message 6: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Thank You Sheena. The spreadsheet looks great. I added my current read Lessons in Chemistry to the plans tab. I'm starting Verity this afternoon but I don't know enough about it to add it to the plans tab yet. I can fill in holes also. Besides these two library books I have to read in a hurry to return I'm open for other reads.

message 7: by Sheena (last edited Jan 20, 2023 09:42AM) (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Oh, Verity was a very quick read for me - such drama!! LOL
Great readathon pick and it will fit lots!!
Hiding some prompt ideas in spoilers in case you want to go in without knowing anything.
(view spoiler)

Having a bit of slow day in the office, so I just started The Thursday Murder Club on audio.

JennH | 564 comments Hi Team Janvier! Excited for another readathon! And excited to see familiar faces. :)

Love the Team January names. I happened to see the teams posted but was in a place with poor service - the library of all places! - and couldn't go into the links. I took a guess that it was January in different languages bc I recognized one of them. What fun! But it was highly frustrating to not be able to see which team I was on, lol.

It is my intent to finish up my book and audiobook that I've been working on. My preference is to start anew with readathons. It's just easier calculations for me.

I'll be back to update the spreadsheet on what I plan to read.

message 9: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Hello Teammates!

I'm currently in progress with When No One Is Watching. Not all sure where this one will fit. I have like 150 pages left and will finish Saturday morning. I'm like a whole 20 pages in on North and South. I'm also listening to it. I'm not sure where this one will fit either.

I'm planning to read 1922. That will be a quick one. The other two books I have are The Last House on Needless Street and The Thursday Murder Club.

Looking forward to knocking some books out!

message 10: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Hey Jenn!! Nice to read with you again :D

Hi Joan - So glad to have you on team Janvier!! I'm listening to Thursday Murder Club right now and I loving it. The characters are a lot of fun

message 11: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Morning Team Janvier!!
It around 7am here (EST) in Ontario Canada. I woke up stupid early and tried to read myself back to sleep but ended up just finishing The Sentence

I'm going to have a coffee, start Mindful of Murder, and once I'm caffeinated enough switch to my audiobook while cleaning house and catching up the laundry.

Wishing everyone a relaxing fun weekend!!

message 12: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Janvier. There are a few of us that have read together before. I always look for familiar names. Thank you Sheena for the prompt ideas for Verity. I also added a book with a green cover.
I woke up reading today & now have 79 pages left on Lessons in Chemistry. I will finish it soon. I plan to use it for sports since this seems like a hard spot to fill. I plan to finish Verity tomorrow. After these two books I don't have a planned book. My next library book isn't in yet. There are three prompts with 0 takers.
1. Self help book
2. Involving music
3. Involving camping/hunting.
I'm leaning towards #2 or #3
Congratulations Sheena for finishing our first book. I loved The Sentence. I gave it to my best friend for her birthday. Good luck everyone with your reading.

message 13: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Great summary Sherri!!

I'll finish Mindful of Murder today for sure! I'm loving it and it's a quick easy read. Characters are taking classes on flower arranging so I can count that for the hobby prompt which also seems like it's a bit harder to fill so far.

I'll look for a self help to slot in, I know my library has a lot of digital options available.

message 14: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Too funny Sheena. In my search for a book for the music prompt I found The Creative Act: A Way of Being. It works for music or self help. I was just getting on Audible to see if it's there when I saw your post. If you find a self help book I will use this one for music. My library has Trophy Hunt available on eBook. This works for the hunting/camping prompt.

message 15: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments Good Morning, Team Janvier! I realized how apropos it is that I'm on this team, as I'm trying to learn french on Duolingo. :)

So I didn't manage to finish my audiobook, Sense and Sensibility, last night like I intended. I had 4:30 hours left, more than a third of the book, so I'll add that to the spreadsheet and see where it can fit. I'll have to finish it before I start on the couple of easy audiobooks I had planned for today. It's a big chore and lots of laundry day which means a lot of time for listening!

Happy reading, everyone!

message 16: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Awesome Sherri - I have High Fidelity on my TBR so that could be an option for music if needed. I'll get through my two current books and see which prompts we need most. And we can always swap around later if need be ...

So glad you found a hunting/camping one, I had a bit of a search and the only thing I could find was the The Hunting Party which I already read (and don't feel like reading again)

Jenn - it's wonderful that you're learning French! Living in Ontario, it's mandated for us to take it in Grades 4-8, and then chose to take it throughout highschool so I have a little from many years ago, but have forgotten most of it.

I'm taking a laundry break now and going to read a few more chapters, then back to laundry and listening. Then a quick mani-pedi break and back to books .

message 17: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I finished Lessons in Chemistry. I used it for a book involving a sport. I put it on all the spreadsheets. I think I got the correct fill color, light blue 3 on my chrome book. I started The Creative Act: A Way of Being on audio book.

message 18: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1148 comments I am a late add to the team. I finished The Thursday Murder Club this afternoon and put it "book with a retired character"... the club is ALL retired people.

Would it make sense to move the Plan and Completed tabs to the beginning of the tabs? For me, it would be easier to check on where our holes are if the plan tab is at the beginning.

message 19: by Kelly (last edited Jan 21, 2023 04:09PM) (new)

Kelly Decoteau (kjdecoteau) | 31 comments Hello team! This is the first time I've participated in a read-a-thon!
I'll be updating the spreadsheet soon but I finished Born a Crime today. I'm in the middle of The Seven Day Switch and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

I'm 20 min into a new audio book that is a non-fiction, business related book ... not exactly self help ... but personal/business development. If it doesn't fit a prompt I will save it for later and start something new.

message 20: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I completed When No One Is Watching. I marked off what it would be good for if someone wants to mark it off where they want it to go.

message 21: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Welcome Edie & Kelly to the team. Glad to have you both aboard. Edie I want to wait for Sheena to check in about moving the plan & completed tabs to the beginning before doing it. I don't have a problem with moving them. Does anyone have an opinion about moving them? I do think the tracking tab was moved toward the end between the plan & completed tabs. I remember it being at the start.

message 22: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments My touch mousepad was going crazy. That might have been me that accidentally moved it. I got a new laptop and it seems to be hyper sensitive.

message 23: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Decoteau (kjdecoteau) | 31 comments Thoughts on The Pumpkin Plan as self help?
It has a pumpkin on the cover so it can count for that prompt.

message 24: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments That’s alright Joan. I just thought it was my memory playing tricks on me. Kelly Goodreads has The Pumpkin Plan listed as self help so it works for me. Also I consider pumpkin food so it would work under health. A book featuring food on the cover. I’m not sure how prominently farmers are featured in the book but they are blue collared workers.

Hi Edie, glad to have you join us. I'm listening to the same book now and am really enjoying it! Hope you liked it.

I'm not sure about moving tabs, I don't have a problem with it but not sure if the mods checking in like the tabs to uniform across the groups?

Awesome Joan! I looked at the possibilities and popped it into Health - doctors/nurses since we only had two current options for that and more for the rest. We can always to a swap around later if need be.
Looking forward to reading with you this week!!

Ok, I just noticed the self help tag too so I'll count it. Already marked it for food!

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments WOW - Six books already completed and we're not even through day one!! Amazing team Janvier!!

I'm taking a break from books to work a bit on the spreadsheet.

A bit about the tabs
Planning Add any books you are currently reading or are hoping to finish this week. X off any prompts that fit and feel free to add/delete as you read. Once you've finished your book, you can either post here for help if you're not sure about where your book should go OR go ahead and copy to the Competed tab. Please copy the whole column in case we need to swap books later.

Completed Please include the complete column data on the completed tab. This way if we need to do a swap for book later, we know which other prompts the book will fit.

Once you've added your book to the Completed Tab, then it can be added to the individual Money, Health, Career (etc) tabs. Please note this is only for completed books. If you're unsure or not comfortable with the spreadsheet, no worries at all, co-captains are here to help, move or fix anything that gets wobbly. Do your best or give us a shout for help.

Daily Tracking Log all your daily read pages and audio minutes. We need 2000 pages or 30 hours for to complete each resolution. Sherri or I will allot the bookmarks once we've filled in the book requirements for prompts.

The average page count per book to complete a 'resolution' bookmark is 400 so if you have a book that doesn't fit a prompt that is totally fine, you can log the pages/hours without filling a prompt and those additional numbers will be greatly appreciated by the end of the challenge.

If you have any questions or want some help with managing the spreadsheet, just let Sherri or I know. We're both happy to help.

Jen K | 572 comments Nice work everyone!! This weekend has become unexpectedly busy but I also finished my audio book today,The Last Romantics. It fits a bunch of prompts in case we need to switch later.

Jen K | 572 comments Added in my new audio, Shelf Life: Chronicles of a Cairo Bookseller. Will need to listen more before knowing which items it checks.

@Sheena, column C looks off for the count. Shouldn't they all be a count formula? It looks like some one typed in numbers instead of fixing the formula when we went past column P. I am not a spreadsheet expert so please feel free to ignore if it's not something that needs fixing. :)

Amazing!! We are doing so great for day 1

Thanks for the heads up about the formula .. will go check/fix.

message 34: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Good catch Jen! The formula was missing in a bunch of places, I add a LOT more columns and re-entered the count so we should be good now. Thank you!!

message 37: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 572 comments Kelly wrote: "Can a completed book fill more than one spot on the individual tabs? (Money, Family, Health, etc.)"

No unfortunately, one book can only fit one prompt on the individual tabs. It is hard to choose sometimes.

message 38: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3280 comments Hi everyone, sorry to be so late! I was convinced that the read-a-thon only started tomorrow for some reason. Luckily, I listened to an entire audiobook today (Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language, which was 8 hours) while I did some work. But because I was working all day, I didn't really have a chance to look at what's needed. Definitely planning to take a better look tomorrow!

message 39: by JennH (new)

JennH | 564 comments Today ended up being a little more chaotic than expected and I got in less reading/listening than I planned. I also have to put aside Sad Cypress temporarily. Will get back to it later in the week.

I did manage to finish Sense and Sensibility and A Spindle Splintered which I entered on the spreadsheet. Out of curiosity though, I noticed that Sense and Sensibility has been moved and wondered why. Esp since it was moved to the birth/death prompt which seems to have the most options/most easily filled.

I'm starting Answers in the Pages and Royal Valentine.

So TRUE! It's always hard to pick which prompt, but we can always do swaps later. My general strategy is to look for
1) the prompts with fewest options
2) the prompt that gets us closer to filling a whole section

I've created a Done #1 (column D) on the completed and plans tab, as well as second one (it's hidden for now to keep sheet cleaner) that I have a feeling we'll need sooner than later at this rate.

Where did you have it originally? I don't think I moved anything but the spreadsheet was a bit chaotic so it's possible that I changed it unintentionally. We can absolutely flip it back to wherever it was.

message 43: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments I was hoping to finish my current read Mindful of Murder last night, but ending up falling asleep early.

Today's plan is same as yesterday - read & drink coffee until I finish it, then switch to audio & laundry/cleaning.

I've got lots of books ready to go so I'll choose my next book based on slots we're weak on.

message 44: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Happy Sunday & Day #2 Team Janvier!
We are off to such a terrific start! 8 books logged (and I know there are more to be added to the sheet) PLUS 2 bookmarks already. I know the first day everyone tends to be wrapping up partially finished books but I still thing this is amazing.

What is everyone planning today? Any books you're hoping to start or finish or anything fun taking you away from your reading?

message 45: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Janvier. Wow a lot happened last night while I was asleep. Thank you everyone for staying on top of the spreadsheet. I do have one spreadsheet question. On the plans tab under health a book with a character who has a mental illness/disability has 0 on the count but is filled in with color filler. Shouldn't that line not be filled in if there isn't a book to fill it? Does that question make sense. I didn't remove the color till I had others look at it too.

message 46: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Janvier take 2. Hi Rachael. Always good to see you. Our last read-a-thon in December started on a Sunday which threw all of us off. It was different. You may of been thinking about that.
We are doing great. I'm excited to see what today brings. Sheena wrote "What is everyone planning today? Any books you're hoping to start or finish or anything fun taking you away from your reading?" I'm hoping to finish Verity & The Creative Act: A Way of Being. I hope to start Trophy Hunt today which works for the hunting/camping prompt. No fun plans today. We have a weather advisory today so I should read all day which I think is fun.
One more question. Did anyone have problems with Libby yesterday letting you check out a book?

message 47: by Sheena (last edited Jan 22, 2023 04:42AM) (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Morning Sherri,
I completely understand why it's confusing, but it's correct.

I create the highlight you see manually when a book is added to the completed tab. (I haven't added any conditional formatting YET, lol)

When we move a column from the planning tab to the completed tab it erases all the 'x's from that row and changes the count total. In this case it changed it from 1 back to 0

On the Completed Tab we can see that prompt is filled, so most team captains highlight the planning sheet to show that the prompt has been competed. Otherwise you would see the zero on the planning tab and think it needed to be filled but really it's already done.

There is often some discussion about leaving the planning tab column in place rather than removing to keep the tally correct, but then the planning tab gets really large and hard to focus on current reads. And you still couldn't tell it was filled without checking the completed tab, so most groups seem to delete from planning tab & paste (values only) to complete. I usually sneak a peak at the other teams sheets to see if anyone has found a different way to manage this but so far this makes the most sense to me. Always, if you have ideas or suggestions let us know.
*hope this all makes sense, please let me know if doesn't :D

message 48: by Sheena (new)

Sheena Davis (sheenad) | 571 comments Or more simply ... a highlight on the planning tab means that prompt has been completed. We're using blue for round 1, and will choose a different colour for round 2 when we get there.

message 49: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Sheena, I thought that was what was happening. I woke up this morning with a touch of vertigo & my brain is fussy. This is the way we have done it in the past so all is good. Thank You.

message 50: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I asked Emily if the mods cared if we moved tabs on the spreadsheet. I wanted to follow up on Edie's question & get the definitive answer so we'll know.
