I recently finished a delightful middle grade mystery/spy book
Mission Manhattan by James Ponti https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I have started reading The Deep End
by Julie Mulhern. It is quite refreshing from the historical fiction books that I have been reading.
The Power and the Glory by Graham GreeneGreene is one of my favorite authors. His characters are complex and flawed. 4/5

I'm closing out the week with
Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust by Mindy Quigley https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Rising Tiger by Brad Thor | audiobook read by Armand Schultz | ReviewScot Harvath series #21 is set in India with a looming China threat.
I'd have been saying a lot more than Hail, Mary, if I'd been on board that spaceship in Andrew Weir's amazing sci-fi adventure, Project Hail Mary! A wild, fascinating ride into the unknown, full of warmth and affection in spite of the terror.
My review of Project Hail Mary
I finished Clark and Division
by Naomi Hirihara. Set in 1941-1944. Japanese family is sent of Manzanar to Chicago. A lot of polital and social issues of the time. Very dark novel Just okay for me.
I'm starting out the week with
Murder Out of Character by Olivia Matthews https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This book got a lot of bad reviews but I like Nelson DeMille and wanted to give it a fair try. Sad to say, it wasn't the author's usual high-quality product. For most of the book, I thought either it was an AI experiment or "training wheels" for DeMille's successor. It's repetitive (could've been cut by maybe 1/3 and lost nothing) and at times almost crass. I've enjoyed other John Corey novels but this was...sorry...bad. Corey's endless bragging about how tough he is gets old by the twentieth pass. His ambiguous side remarks contrast very negatively with his actions with the "love interest". Even the climactic scenes were borderline silly.Writing a novel isn't easy, so I'll give him 2 stars which is generally my minimum. But it's a stretch. I hope the next one is better written. Nelson De Mille's many fans deserve far better than The Maze.
Just started The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. At once was sucked into it. The writing is superb, word choice stunning. I stayed up way late but finally had to put it down (eyes burning, dawn coming). I had enjoyed Cutting for Stone, hoped this would be as good. It's very different and even better!
Finished The Deserter by Nelson DeMille | audiobook read by Scott Brick | ReviewThe first in a new series by father/son writing duo is a fast paced action thriller.
In The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly, LA Detective Harry Bosch is up against it following the 1994 record-breaking earthquake that wrecked his house. Mind you, that's the least of his problems.
My review of The Last Coyote
I'm closing out the month with
Take the Honey and Run by Jennie Marts https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished a reread of a book from my 2016 NetGalley shelf. It was just as enjoyable second time around.
All That is Lost Between Us by Sara Foster ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A lovely multi-generational tale infected with Irish wit and warmth.
The Sunrise Swimming Society by Rosie Hannigan ⭐⭐⭐⭐https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Catherine Ryan Hyde is an automatic go-to author for many readers, but I wonder what they will make of A Different Kind of Gone. I think it's one that book clubs wll enjoy discussing.
My review of A Different Kind of Gone
Taut, twisty and surprising!
Don't Forget Me by Rea Frey ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A heartwarming story of family, love and loyalty.
Sisterhood by Cathy Kelly ⭐⭐⭐⭐.2 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I enjoyed Detective Zoe Mayer's latest murder investigation with her service dog, Harry, aka The Good Dog. I'm sure he is one of Simon Rowell's most popular characters. What's not to love?
My review of The Good Dog
I finished Leaden Skies
. This book is set in 1880 Leadville, Colorado. Very good historical mystery captures the time period. You get a feel for walking around in muddy streets, going to a saloon. Characters are mulit dimentional. This is book 3 of the series. Starting at the beginning is good idea but I have not read this series in many years and was not confused.
I'm kicking off March with
Black List, White Death by Steve Hockensmith https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm finishing out the week by tying up the Quilting Mysteries with
Knot Ready for Murder by Mary Marks https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
August 25, 1983 is a surreal short story by the Argentinian master, Jorge Luis Borges. A dream within a dream? Read it - it's intriguing!
My review of August 25, 1983 with links to the story online
Completed Lincoln's Last Trial: The Murder Case That Propelled Him to the Presidency by Dan Abrams | read by Adam Verner A murder trial was the last thing Lincoln wanted to take on as there was talks at the time people wanting Lincoln to enter the political arena. Book appeals to those who enjoy the law, murder trials or true crime stories then this is worthy read.
