Charles Dickens is known for many things, but this spooky story about a railroad worker seems different to me. The Signal-Man could easily have been a Twilight Zone episode.

The Tilt, by excellent Aussie author Chris Hammer, is the second in this rural mystery series, but it would be just as good as a standalone. Homicide detectives in small towns are up against generations of feuds and loyalties.
My review of The Tilt
I'm starting off the year with
Partners in Crime by Steve Hockensmith https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I read Death in Hilo by Eric Redman It is a police procedural, set in Hawaii. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
From a Far and Lovely Country
by Alexander McCall SmithThe investigators at the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency are concerned with a shady nightclub, family connections, and a new dress.
Always nice to visit with these favorite characters. 3 stars

Now starting THE PRISONER OF GUANTANAMO by Dan Fesperman, a stand alone novel published back in 2006 that won the Hammett Prize for Best Mystery Novel and was shortlisted for the Barry Award as well.I read four other mystery/thriller books by Fesperman last year and really enjoyed them, so I am hoping this one will keep the momentum going.
My 5-Star review for The Gray Beast Strikes at Night
by Jonathan Pembroke https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My first cozy of the year is
Dead and Gondola by Ann Claire https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Domestic Violets
was Matthew Norman’s first book and he definitely improved with time. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Friends and Traitors
by John LawtonInspector Troy #8. It turns out that Troy is friends with Guy Burgess, the famous Soviet spy. And Burgess proceeds to pull Troy into the complicated business of espionage. This is another wonderful effort by Lawton. Well-loved old and new characters involved in a very complicated plot with lots of moving pieces. 4 stars, highly recommended.
I read I Am Rome by Santiago Posteguillo It is an excellent historical fiction book about young Julius Caesar. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm closing out the week with my first audio book of the year:
The Burning Room by Michael Connelly https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Reading The Long Shadow: The Classic Christmas Mystery by Celia Fremlin. So far it reminds me of something Shirley Jackson would have written without the creep factor.
