Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments A Song of Comfortable Chairs A Song of Comfortable Chairs (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, #23) by Alexander McCall Smith by Alexander McCall Smith

In this book in the 'No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency' series, Mma Ramotswe's concerns include a problem in the office; a furniture store's cutthroat business practices; and a rebellious teen.

Usual quiet cozy from this author. 3.5 stars

Barbara | 1 comments Finished Nicci French's "Until It's Over."
I couldn't wait until it was over. Before that it was another women-oriented psychological suspense, "Wherever She Goes."
Both were disappointing - I said in another group that this is the one category - female oriented psychological suspense - that I'm finding most disappointing. There's no real personality in the writing, no real "voice" - going only by the writing style, one person could be writing all of these books.
Lately I've had more luck with historical and Sherlockian books than contemporary novels.

And many of the plots are the same, reworked with names changed. I just don't even bother to try them any more. It's really frustrating.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting ACT OF OBLIVION by Robert Harris, his newest hardcover thriller set in the 17th century and focusing on the manhunt for those who ordered the execution of King George I.

I have read five of his previous novels (ARCHANGEL, THE GHOST, MUNICH, AN OFFICER AND A SPY, and V2) and enjoyed them, so I am looking forward to continuing that winning streak.

Araych | 676 comments The House at Sea's End The House at Sea's End (Ruth Galloway, #3) by Elly Griffiths by Elly Griffiths

Ruth Galloway #3, probably best to read series in order. I thought this was probably the best so far in the series. The past (WW II) plays an important part in the plot and the story is very atmospheric about the titular house and the surrounding area. I liked it a lot, 4 stars.

I read that decades ago, recall the title rather than the story but also recall I thought it really funny.

For myself, I'm finally reading Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon, which I've said I was going to read for at least five years. I've already read a few others in the series, and as usual with a first book I'm a little surprised how much is already in the book that becomes a staple of the series.
