Dark Angel aka Wildflower Girls is promoted as gripping and unputdownable, but I lost my grip, skimmed to the end, and put it down quickly. D.K. Hood has a lot of fans and some very high ratings, so I guess it's just me.
My review of Dark Angel
The Bag of Secrets
was a well done, uplifting police procedural. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I'm so very behind again, but I'm reading Vengeance Is Mine by Marie NDiaye. So far so good; an attorney just starting her rather quiet career is asked by a man to defend his wife, who is being prosecuted for murdering her children. The question is, of course, why wouldn't he go to a more seasoned attorney? Early days, but I'm liking it.
I've finished The Sanctuary: A Novel by Gustavo Abrevaya, an author from Argentina. The main character and his wife are on their way to a cabin getaway, but their car gets stuck in the desert. They find their way into a small town where she disappears overnight -- and he does everything possible to find her. But there's more going on in this town than meets the eye. More horror than crime, but very, very intelligent and well written.

If you don’t mind a ton of violence, A Line in the Sand

Dirty Thirty

I read Lost Hours by Paige Shelton t is book 5 in the Alaska Wild series. Both my wife and I recommend this series. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...This is my 100th book review this year, the most that I have written in 1 year!
‘Being Lena Levi’ recalls the shadow that still stalks Europe seeking to take new forms and ground. If one speaks of history lessons for the young, it evokes something worthy and obligatory, like school cabbage, but here was none of that.’ https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I always enjoy Irish writer Claire Keegan's work and her new collection, So Late in the Day: Stories of Men and Women, is a good one to start with if you haven't read her yet. Few words but big impact.
My review of So Late in the Day: Stories
Chris Hammer is a former Aussie journo who now writes great mysteries, often set in the hot, dry interior, as with Treasure & Dirt aka Opal Country. Excellent read and enjoyable audio as well.

It certainly is, Nancy! It was shortlisted for last year's Booker Prize in spite of being so short. I loved it!
My review of Small Things Like These
I've read some DARK and some LIGHT fiction recently.I just enjoyed a return visit to Chief of Police Bruno Courrèges in southern France in Martin Walker's Dordogne Mysteries. In The Dark Vineyard, wine, food, and festivities are disturbed by sabotage and suspicious deaths.
5★ My review of The Dark Vineyard
Terry Pratchett has left us with libraries full of fun, so of course I enjoyed The Light Fantastic. Discworld is on a fatal collision course and inept wizard Rincewind is needed to stop it. As entertaining as ever.

Finished and reviewed:Black Gun, Silver Star - This is a biography of Bass Reeves, who was a former slave turned US Marshal. The book itself was spotty - I think there wasn't enough solid biographical material for a good narrative, a lot of letters, news articles, documents, etc - but a series just started about Reeves - it was streaming, but the first 2 episodes aired on CBS on Sunday night. Pretty good overall.
Silence, by Thomas Perry - Perry is the author of the Jane Whitefield series about a Native woman who helps people disappear. Perry created a new character who has the same skill - the idea - a woman he helped disappear has to be found when someone is charged with her "murder" - was better than the book itself. The Whitefield series is better.
