Neal Carey #2. Carey falls in love with a beautiful Chinese woman who may or may not be a spy. Many complicated adventures ensue. I never liked or believed in the Carey character although the book is well written with several entertaining pieces.

In this addition to the 'Mrs. Murphy' mysteries, amateur sleuth Harry Haristeen is concerned about drug deaths in her county.

As always, the talking animals add fun to the story. 3.5 stars

Andy is hired to defend her from a triple murder charge. I like the series and this one is very good -- 4 stars.

Araych | 676 comments Secrets Typed in Blood Secrets Typed in Blood (Pentecost & Parker #3) by Stephen Spotswood by Stephen Spotswood

Pentecost and Parker #3, series probably best (but not mandatory) read in order. This is the best of the series so far. For those who don't know, this series is a slightly inferior reimagining of the Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series with female protagonists. It's not inferior because they're women; it's inferior because Spotswood isn't Rex Stout. But anyway, 4 stars.

Randy wrote: "I thought I'd step away from mysteries for a while and started White Horse by Erika T. Wurth and, whattaya know, it's kind of a mystery, with a ghost. "

Turned out, it was definitely a mystery, the protagonist had to solve. With a ghost pushing her along the way. Solid first novel. If you like ghost/horror stories, I'd put this about on a par with Joe Hill's first novel, Heart-Shaped Box.

Now, for something completely different, American Hippo by Sarah Gailey.

Araych | 676 comments To Kingdom Come To Kingdom Come (Barker & Llewelyn, #2) by Will Thomas by Will Thomas

Barker & Llewelyn #2, recommend you read #1 first. Not a mystery--it's a thriller. London 1884. Rather Holmes and Watson territory. Barker and Llewelyn are hired by the Home Office to stop Irish nationalist from blowing up London buildings. This is an entertaining series with lots of interesting details about the time and place. I liked it a lot -- 4 stars.

Couldn't help myself after finishing The Followers, a novel which focuses on a particular (fictional) cult in England -- in the cult-reading mode, I started the new book about David Koresh: Koresh: The True Story of David Koresh and the Tragedy at Waco.

I'll also be starting Kurkov's Grey Bees for another group's group read.
