The Trail to Buddha's Mirror
by Don WinslowNeal Carey #2. Carey falls in love with a beautiful Chinese woman who may or may not be a spy. Many complicated adventures ensue. I never liked or believed in the Carey character although the book is well written with several entertaining pieces.

My review of The Private Life of Spies and the Exquisite Art of Getting Even: Stories by Alexander McCall Smith
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished It's One of Us last week. My absolute favorite so far this year. Loved every bit of is. Now I'm 20% in on The People Next Door: bit slow, and I'm a bit bored, but not giving up yet.

My review of Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves

A cannibal as the protagonist of a crime thriller? Yes, it can work if you're prepared to get on board and accept his weirdness. Hideout is the 3rd book in the Timothy Blake series and it's another stomach-turner.My review of
- Hideout by Jack Heathhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Twelve Dogs of Christmas
by David RosenfeltAndy Carpenter #15. Martha is an elderly lady whose main concern is the welfare of the dogs and puppies she shelters and rehomes.
Andy is hired to defend her from a triple murder charge. I like the series and this one is very good -- 4 stars.
I loved Max Porter's latest novel, Shy and the boy for whom it is titled. Shy retreats into music at The Last Chance School to escape his memories. It's a wonderful, short gem of a book.
5★ My review of Shy
Kelly Link's new collection of seven stories, White Cat, Black Dog: Stories, is based on old folk and fairy tales. I can see why she's so popular. The ones I liked, I really liked. Others - not so much.
3★ My review of White Cat, Black Dog with a link to 'The New Yorker' article about both the book and its author
Fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy Mastering the Art of French Murder

Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather
Rating: 4 stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Not a mystery or thriller, just a really good book.
Secrets Typed in Blood
by Stephen SpotswoodPentecost and Parker #3, series probably best (but not mandatory) read in order. This is the best of the series so far. For those who don't know, this series is a slightly inferior reimagining of the Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series with female protagonists. It's not inferior because they're women; it's inferior because Spotswood isn't Rex Stout. But anyway, 4 stars.
Singg Her Down
is one of my favorites of the year. My five star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Nero Wolfe is my favorite. 😀
Fractured Oak is an unusual and entertaining mystery with an oak tree as a key witness who can't testify. Author Dannie Boyd mixes magical realism with a good police story and it works.
3.5~4★ My review of Fractured Oak
If John Boyne had invented all of this, people might say it's too far-fetched, but, in fact, Crippen is based on a true story. A creepy 'doctor' and a curious tale.
3.5~4★ My review of Crippen
not crime but I've recently finished
Cursed Bread by Sophie Mackintosh (women's prize for fiction nominee) and Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin (IRL book group read).

I've been auditioning books for my IRL book group and just finished one that will definitely be on the list: The Followers by Rebecca Wait.
I finally got around to reading The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson and now understand the praise I'd heard about. I crime story filled with anti-heroes and unexpected twists. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I am adoring the DC Smith series, especially the 6th, The Rags of Time.

Randy wrote: "I thought I'd step away from mysteries for a while and started White Horse by Erika T. Wurth and, whattaya know, it's kind of a mystery, with a ghost. "
Turned out, it was definitely a mystery, the protagonist had to solve. With a ghost pushing her along the way. Solid first novel. If you like ghost/horror stories, I'd put this about on a par with Joe Hill's first novel, Heart-Shaped Box.
Now, for something completely different, American Hippo by Sarah Gailey.

To Kingdom Come
by Will ThomasBarker & Llewelyn #2, recommend you read #1 first. Not a mystery--it's a thriller. London 1884. Rather Holmes and Watson territory. Barker and Llewelyn are hired by the Home Office to stop Irish nationalist from blowing up London buildings. This is an entertaining series with lots of interesting details about the time and place. I liked it a lot -- 4 stars.
I read The Wind Knows My Name by Isabel Allende I enjoyed it and recommend it to fans of the author and historical fiction fans. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Couldn't help myself after finishing The Followers, a novel which focuses on a particular (fictional) cult in England -- in the cult-reading mode, I started the new book about David Koresh: Koresh: The True Story of David Koresh and the Tragedy at Waco.
I'll also be starting Kurkov's Grey Bees for another group's group read.

The Lost
by Jeffrey B. BurtonIn this addition to the 'Mace Reid K-9 Mystery Series', cadaver dog trainer Mace Reid gets involved in a murder/abduction case.
The book is an engaging thriller with a big dose of humor. 3.5 stars
