The Dead of Winter by Stuart MacBride

Here is my five star review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A good book to start with if you've never read any MacBrides before, because this is a stand alone.

Barbara | 1 comments Just finished with a book called "Vanishing Games". Apparently it is the follow up book to the author's debut, called "Ghostman."
A team of jewel thieves working for a mysterious woman go to hijack a boat carrying a cache of sapphires. They get on the boat and the team leader sees the sapphires and something A Lot More Valuable.
Problem is, when they get to the ALMV, it's kind of anticlimactic, and the writing is what I call the "smarty pants" vein - not bad, but with each aspect of the plot - drug smuggling, precious gems, weapons, hired killers the author goes into a paragraphs' long description of the who/how/what that sort of reads like a Wikipedia entry. I don't want to pick p a novel and read someone else's see-how-much-I-know research.
Really great first chapter, though.

A Brief History of Living Forever by Jaroslav Kalfar

A very good mix of (political) history, dystopia and some SF. My 5 star review can be read here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments It's hardly worth writing a review of Jane Austen's much-loved Pride and Prejudice, is it? But since I finally read it (for a reading challenge), I will admit it has its charms.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 4★ My review of Pride and Prejudice

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments Ah, I remember the heady scent of racing fuel at trackside! Young Lewis Hamilton was bitten early by the Grand Prix bug and grew to be the top Formula One driver and a Sir, no less. Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara shows how a talented black kid made good in a white man's sport.
Lewis Hamilton (Little People, BIG DREAMS, 97) by Fernando Martín 5★ My review of Lewis Hamilton

I read Delphi Complete Works of Jane Austen which was very interesting because you were able to see her growth as a writer. I love the Delphi Complete Works books and have read L. Frank Baum, Mark Twain, Virginia Woolf, the Brothers Grimm, and parts of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Alexandre Dumas and am working my way through the Complete Zane Grey and Arthur Conan Doyle (I read all the Sherlock Holmes books and am no into the medieval tales)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments The Peppermint Tea Chronicles The Peppermint Tea Chronicles (44 Scotland Street, #13) by Alexander McCall Smith by Alexander McCall Smith

In these affable, humorous books, Smith follows the lives of a group of people who reside in Edinburgh's "New Town" neighborhood. If you follow the series, the uber-controlling Irene, who plagued her husband and little son, has finally decamped for Aberdeen.

Enjoyable light reading. 3.5 stars
