I made another visit to Three Pines just recently, this time it was in flood and the denizens of social media were brutal. But Armand Gamache once again proved himself, once again, to be above it all and is still a fine homicide detective. My review of
- A Better Man by Louise Pennyhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It's time to slowly return to the land of the living after being away for about a month. I've recently finished Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez, which was solidly fantastic although a bit on the longish side. And since today I go back to meet with my real-world book group for the first time since January, I've also reread Simenon's The Blue Room, this month's reading selection. It's one of my favorites by this author; in my opinion, it's one of his very best.
I just finished Charlie Donlea's Twenty Years Later. It held my attention throughout; however, the ending was a little convoluted. It averaged 4*s from me. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
The King Arthur Case
was my least favorite of the series. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Last Orphan
by Gregg Andrew HurwitzFormer assassin Evan Smoak (Orphan X) is on the government's radar, but the U.S. President offers Evan a deal. Kill a billionaire business mogul/political influencer who threatens her re-election or go to prison.
Action-packed thriller with favorite recurring characters. 3.5 stars

Chantelle wrote: "has anybody read MISERY....by stephen king please? if so would you recommend it?"Yes I have read it and no I would not recommend it unless you like to see someone suffering for a long period of time. Lots of people like it though.
Last night I was ready to start reading All Quiet on the Western Front (followed by the sequel The Road Back) but evidently I've misplaced it, so I went back to my other book, The Killing Fields: Harvest of Women by Diana Washington Valdez. I bought this after having listened to an excellent podcast called "The Forgotten
Women of Juarez."

Just started Last Seen Wearing by Hillary Waugh, an early police procedural predating Ed McBain's 87th precinct novels.
Still plugging away at The Life of Crime: Unravelling the mysteries of fiction’s favourite genre by Martin Edwards. So much info per page. Strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of the genre, though it might not hurt to have read Bloody Murder: From the Detective Story to the Crime Novel by Julian Symons first, as much of Edwards' book is in conversation with Symons'.

Bluffing Mr. Churchill
by John LawtonInspector Troy #3 best read in order. I believe also published in England as "Riptide". Warning: Troy doesn't really have much presence until about page 200 but that's actually very OK. This is an absolutely wonderful book mostly about an American army officer thrown into an English cloak and dagger world in London, April, 1941. Layered plot, fantastic characters, and great dialogue and fascinating details about British life during this frightening and dangerous time make this engrossing story come alive. Highest recommendation -- 5 stars.
London Rules by Mick HerronFor my re-read, I listened to the audiobook. It did not disappoint. Slough House is now my comfort read series.

I was hoping to find an answer to What Are Mondays Good For, Anyway?, not being a fan of Mondays, and while I enjoyed the illustrations, I don't think I'd have been happy sending my kids to school with these suggestions.
2.5★ My review of What Are Mondays Good For, Anyway? with illustrations, of course
Doris Lessing showed in 1963 that it wasn't possible for even A Woman on a Roof to escape unwanted attention. I'm not sure things have changed that much in 50 years, have they?
2.5~3★ My review of A Woman on A Roof with a link to the short story itself
Operation Mincemeat by Ben Macintyre. After quite a bit of filling in the backstory of many characters, the plot is getting into gear…
Enjoyed
23rd Midnight by James PattersonJames Patterson and Maxine PaetroHere's my 5* review

The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman
This is #3 and it could be read as a standalone but why miss out on the preceding two?

For those that can handle the violence, Age of Vice
is amazing. My 4.5 star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I read Wolves at the Door by Gunnar Staalesen It is book 21 in the Varg Veum series, set in Bergen, Norway. My 4 star review for a dark, Nordic noir book. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A classic that I somehow missed! A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle has everything I'd have loved as a young reader: kids on a quest, a mysterious missing father, magic spirits, time travel, and Evil to be overcome! I still enjoyed it now.
4★ My review of A Wrinkle in Time
The Ink Black HeartThe Ink Black Heart
by Robert GalbraithIn this addition to the series, private detectives Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott try to identify an online troll and track down a killer.

I've found Bloody Murder: From the Detective Story to the Crime Novel to be very useful at times, although I don't always agree with Symons assessments.

I bought that some time ago and now everyone I know who's read it has given it high praise. I should read it -- maybe on vacation.

My daughter and I read that book together when she was about ten and both of us loved it. So good!

I just finished The Villa
which was a tale of two sections. The last 20% redeems what up until then was a bit of a bore. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Me, too, on both. Edwards suggests that the older Symons didn't always agree with the younger Symons. Edwards (as, I think, before him, H. R. F. Keating) applies less stringent criteria for his judgements, such as they are. I find Symons more invigorating to read because of the standards he applied, but Edwards is entertaining and not entirely nonjudgmental.

Unnatural History

Seven Sisters by Katherine Kovacic is a revenge thriller in which the sisters of domestic violence victims take matters into their own hands.

Six Ostriches
is the next in Philipp Schott's Canadian vet mystery series. I enjoyed it without knowing anything about the previous book, Fifty-Four Pigs. It's an entertaining mix of ancient Icelandic sagas, cults, sacrifices... and ostriches.
4★ My review of Six Ostriches
Cry to Me
J.A. Schneider
