My review of

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
It's time to slowly return to the land of the living after being away for about a month. I've recently finished Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez, which was solidly fantastic although a bit on the longish side. And since today I go back to meet with my real-world book group for the first time since January, I've also reread Simenon's The Blue Room, this month's reading selection. It's one of my favorites by this author; in my opinion, it's one of his very best.

Former assassin Evan Smoak (Orphan X) is on the government's radar, but the U.S. President offers Evan a deal. Kill a billionaire business mogul/political influencer who threatens her re-election or go to prison.
Action-packed thriller with favorite recurring characters. 3.5 stars

Yes I have read it and no I would not recommend it unless you like to see someone suffering for a long period of time. Lots of people like it though.
Last night I was ready to start reading All Quiet on the Western Front (followed by the sequel The Road Back) but evidently I've misplaced it, so I went back to my other book, The Killing Fields: Harvest of Women by Diana Washington Valdez. I bought this after having listened to an excellent podcast called "The Forgotten
Women of Juarez."

Just started Last Seen Wearing by Hillary Waugh, an early police procedural predating Ed McBain's 87th precinct novels.
Still plugging away at The Life of Crime: Unravelling the mysteries of fiction’s favourite genre by Martin Edwards. So much info per page. Strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of the genre, though it might not hurt to have read Bloody Murder: From the Detective Story to the Crime Novel by Julian Symons first, as much of Edwards' book is in conversation with Symons'.

Inspector Troy #3 best read in order. I believe also published in England as "Riptide". Warning: Troy doesn't really have much presence until about page 200 but that's actually very OK. This is an absolutely wonderful book mostly about an American army officer thrown into an English cloak and dagger world in London, April, 1941. Layered plot, fantastic characters, and great dialogue and fascinating details about British life during this frightening and dangerous time make this engrossing story come alive. Highest recommendation -- 5 stars.

For my re-read, I listened to the audiobook. It did not disappoint. Slough House is now my comfort read series.

The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman
This is #3 and it could be read as a standalone but why miss out on the preceding two?

I've found Bloody Murder: From the Detective Story to the Crime Novel to be very useful at times, although I don't always agree with Symons assessments.

I bought that some time ago and now everyone I know who's read it has given it high praise. I should read it -- maybe on vacation.

Me, too, on both. Edwards suggests that the older Symons didn't always agree with the younger Symons. Edwards (as, I think, before him, H. R. F. Keating) applies less stringent criteria for his judgements, such as they are. I find Symons more invigorating to read because of the standards he applied, but Edwards is entertaining and not entirely nonjudgmental.

In this addition to the (long-running) series, psychologist Alex Delaware helps LAPD Detective Milo Sturgis investigate the death of a photographer.
Good police procedural. 3.5 stars

Symons also wrote some pretty good mysteries himself, although some were just bad.
