They wrote, A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher Which I and a number of other readers in the group have read and enjoyed. I hope this one turns out to be as good, or enjoyable.

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments T Kingfisher is good for cozy fantasy romance. She is definitely talented. However, her lightfeather style and possibly intentional use of anachronisms make her works for me like tasty but not healthy snacks :)

message 204: by Mike (new)

Mike Sherer Just finished watching the 6th season of The Expanse. It seems they did a book each season. Plan to finish the story by reading the books starting with the 7th.

I haven't watched the TV series but books are good

Oleksandr Zholud | 927 comments I've finished Nebula nominee from 2017 The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, a debut novel by Theodora Goss, where a lot of 19th-century monsters join together... an interesting story, my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

What?!? Not care for Temeraire?? Say it isn't so!! (Of course, I have a weakness for Napoleonic Wars historical fiction since Richard Sharpe.)

A kindred spirit :) Sharpe is why I love reading about it, too!

I have read more than one series (some over twenty books in length) of the wooden ships and iron men of the British Navy in the days of sail. Having Lord Nelson win his sea battles, because of the British air force, consisting of dragons, was a bit of a reach. Why I stopped after the first book. :-)

I would suggest reading the whole series, from what I have seen they change a number of things from the books so it might prove a little disorientating to start towards the end.

message 218: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Bowler | 41 comments I agree @DJ bought the first book can’t wait to start it. Need to get through book 6 of the wheel of time first.

Ozsaur | 106 comments The Collarbound - I like the characters, but the world building is fascinating.

message 220: by Tyler (new)

Tyler Bowler | 41 comments That’s what I keep hearing, excited to get into it!

message 221: by Regalado (new)

Regalado | 7 comments I just started The Stars My Destination. Wow! First 30 pages were action packed. Going to it kinda blind, just knowing that it's about vengeance, I didn't know about the teleportation. Quite entertaining. I am also liking Alfred Bester, his style of writing.

message 222: by Marc (new)

Marc Towersap (marct22) | 340 comments Just finished A.E. Van Vogt's Slan. a way old book (1940), I imagine X-Men took some inspiration from it. FYI (and this isn't a spoiler), slan = mutant. When reading it, I had to keep reminding myself slan came first when I recognized certain plot points. The ending reminded me of kinda like Empire Strikes back, not in a negative way like ESB, but it was like, I want to know what's next and... the book ended. I know there's a sequel called Slan Hunter (A.E. Van Vogt declined from Alzheimer's too much to finish, so Kevin Anderson took it over). I guess I'll have to buy/read that now!

Anyhoo, now reading PK Dick's Ubik.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments I started Gobbelino London & a Worry of Weres last night. I really hope that this won't be the last in the series!!

message 224: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just finished listening to The Good House by Tananarive Due The Good House - an incredible haunted house novel written by an African American author.

message 225: by Mel (new)

Mel | 509 comments So after holding World of the Five Gods in reserve for yeeears, some friends started a Penric and Desdemona BR and forced my hand! It somewhat pains me to skip over Curse of Chalion, since I tend to prefer publication order, but Penric's Demon was so delightful, I'll have to keep reading. :)

You can always try her "Beaufort Scales." Dragons. I just finished book three of London with the nasty unicorns. Fun stuff. Gobbelino London & A Complication of Unicorns by Kim M. Watt Gobbelino London & A Complication of Unicorns I also read her free short story about Poppy (the troll). "No One Expects Lemons." A riot!

message 228: by Anna (last edited Feb 08, 2023 12:30PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Mel! I also started that universe with Penric, and have never regretted it even once! You can absolutely go back to the novels later, after you've read all of Penric five times! :D

The Penric thread deserves more love ^_^

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

(I reread the first Penric book just last week, for the tenth time probably.)

Oh, the Penric books are an absolute joy, I love them so much. I envy you a little, you will read them for the first time ;)

message 230: by Mel (new)

Mel | 509 comments Ooh! Thanks for the thread link Anna! I’ll have to pop in and share my thoughts along the way as I make my way through! I love going into a series that you just know you’re going to love. I can’t believe I’ve had Five Gods in my TBR for like… a decade. Clearly I needed the kick in the pants to convince me to read the Good Stuff now.

Taking a break before continuing for a BR of Illuminations. I’m excited to be spreading the Kingfisher love. :)

message 231: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I also have yet to read Illuminations, which is not at all like me, and I don't think I'll get to it until late February or early March :(

message 232: by Rick (new)

Rick | 260 comments Mel - I started my read with Curse, tried The Hallowed Hunt and bounced off it (was reading a lot then, need to re-try it). I think the Penric novellas all work even if you've never read Curse (though Curse is excellent).

message 233: by Mel (new)

Mel | 509 comments @Anna
I know how that goes. Even with favorite authors sometimes months slip by if the timing isn’t right.

@Rick
Lois McMaster Bujold is certainly on top of things when is comes to explaining her chronology. You can tell she’s probably been asked a thousand times about Reading Order, so that’s one reason why I feel alright about starting with Penric. I’ll come back for Curse of Chalion though, for sure. I hope you have better luck with The Hallowed Hunt the next time around. :)

message 242: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) @Michelle @Allison -- I'm so glad. I just loved the beginning. Great world building and characters. Can't believe it's classified as YA.
