HAPPY NEW YEAR! I finished off last year's reading with Irish author Claire Keegan's wonderful novella, Foster, about a girl who is fostered by a couple while her mum has a baby. Loved it. Great start to the year!
5★ My review of Foster
Happy New Year! I ended 2022 with One Last Child. It was really good, but I haven't written my review yet. I am kicking off 2023 with I'm Glad My Mom Died and Just Get Home.
I'm kicking off the new year with one of my resolutions to try fantasy. I'm reading Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson:)
I can now post my 3.13 rounded to 3 stars review of The House in the Pines
by Ana Reyes.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This is an atmospheric psychological thriller with an unreliable narrator.
I had a lot of fun with The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, which is as quirky as the title suggests. There are orphans and a manor house, deadly threats, romance (bit sexy) and some quite naughty language. Something for the LGBT+ community as well. Oh yes - and magic spells! A most entertaining read.
4★ My review of ...Irregular Witches
Queen Elizabeth never expected to be Queen, but she sure did the job well and was much loved for her common touch and dedication. Children's book author Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara shows her as a child, a teen, and an adult in this great introduction for kids. (Not a bad refresher for grown-ups!]
5★ My review of Queen Elizabeth with several illustrations
I’m currently reading “the 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn hardcastle”, “dead silence” and “embrace the suck”
I finished Last Seen in Santorini
by Vivian Conroy. My 3.44 rounded to 3 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Historical cozy mystery - book 2 in the series
It was entertaining with several twists, but lacked the historical feel of 1930.
I finished my review of Son of the Poison Rose
by Jonathan Maberry. My 3.95 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This is the second book in Maberry's foray into his epic dark fantasy series featuring Kagen Vale. Fantastic world-building, compelling characters, and lots of action and suspense made this one a page turner.
I finished Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim and it was amazing. I’m currently reading Kingdom of the Feared by Kerri Maniscalco.
I finished Chasers
by James Phelan. My 3.73 rounded to 4 stars review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Teen Post Apocalyptic.
Great ending twist.
↑ planning to read Legends & Lattes soon as well. Heard only good things about it At the moment I am reading
and feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside. The story is so sweet and lighthearted - love it!
I actually read this book in 2022, but couldn't post my review until early 2023. City Under One Roof
by Iris YamashitaMy 3.79 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The author blends a unique setting with diverse characters in this atmospheric debut mystery novel. Overall, this story is gripping, thought-provoking, and emotional, with great world-building.
I finished The Devil You Know
by P.J. Tracy.My 3.86 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Overall, this was a complex police procedural with compelling characters. With the several sub-plots, it kept me turning the pages. It's the third book in the Detective Margaret Nolan series.
I’m reading Samantha Shannon’s « The priory of the orange tree » and lovin’ it so far! It’s a fantasy fiction on a really interresting world with magic, dragons, secret and mystery. The univers is well developped and the writing is easy to go one.
I finished Duty to Defend
by Jill Elizabeth Nelson. My 4.05 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This is an inspirational romantic suspense novel filled with action.
What an intriguing short story is The Garden of Forking Paths by Jorge Luis Borges. It is a kind of choose-your-own adventure wartime spy story. What really happened?
5★ My review with a link to the story online.
Who would ever have thought the French might like to reclaim Paris as their own after WWII? An American is disappointed to find "his" wartime Paris so changed in F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story,
Babylon Revisited
.
3.5~4★ My review with a link to the story online.
I am currently reading The Girl With All the Gifts, interesting take on zombies. Didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I am. I am reading it, bc my 17 year old wants to and wants to have someone to talk about with it.
If you think the British royal family is in disarray now, just be thankful they aren't burning 'heretics' at the stake. 🔥 You didn't dare be out of favour with King Henry VIII. I love the Matthew Shardlake historical mystery series by C.J. Sansom. Lamentation is #6.
4.5~5★ My review
Brighten your day with a starry night! Look Up at the Stars by Katie Cotton is a children's picture book where a little bear who wants a star finds his own light.
4★ My review with lots of illustrations
I finished Master of Shadows
by Joss Walker and R.L. Perez. My 4.05 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This was a fun, engaging, and action-filled urban fantasy novel.
Sean Wilson's Gemini Falls is a small coal-mining town in 1930s Australia where a murder is being investigated near the shacks of depression-era homeless families, camped by the river. Obvious suspects, of course.
3★ My review of Gemini Falls
Ernest Hemingway was known for deceptively simple storytelling that can be surprisingly thought-provoking. This short story takes place late night in a Spanish cafe that is A Clean Well-Lighted Place.
5★ My review with a link to the story online
Last year I had a system of my own for what and how to choose my books each month. This year I'm going with reckless abandon and just reading whatever feels right, whenever. I also read far more nonfiction than fiction last year so right now I've kind of gone crazy and am overindulging on fiction. 🤷🏻♀️😆I've completed two books so far this year:
Scattered Showers
The Bear
(Well four actually The Sour Grape and The Smart Cookie to/for my kids.)
As for what I'm currently reading, I tend to read several books at one time; the list is as follows:
House of Leaves
The Works of Edgar Allen Poe
Fresh Ink
What Moves the Dead
The Postmortal
Rabbits
The God Game
I finished An Inheritance To Die For
by Judy Moore.Mu 4.07 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Enjoyable cozy mystery.
I finished Spy x Family, Vol. 1
by Tatsuya Endo and translated by Casey Loe.My 4.05 rounded to 4 stars review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This was my introduction to manga. Thanks to my Goodreads friends in the Vampires, Weres, and Fae! discussion group for the great recommendation.
Just Read The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager Really loved this one! I havent found a book from him I don't like
Now I am starting on Nothing More to Tell by Karen M. McManus
Also going go the to library today to see if I can find some books. I been super sick last few weeks so I am behind on my reading
Daniella Mestyanek Young has written a much-discussed story of her life in 'cults' - first a supposedly religious one, and then the US Army. The colourful cover art of
Uncultured: A Memoir
should be reflected in the print title as "UnCULTured". Quite a story.
4★ My review of UnCULTured (my spelling)
Here is my 4.58 rounded to 5 stars review of Recovery Road
by Christine Feehan:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Overall, this heart-wrenching paranormal romantic suspense novel has great characterization, several sizzling scenes, and plenty of action.
