maybe The Chain Game - February 2021 ~ Kristie"s Toppler
or 2014 Year Long Challenge - Connect the Chunksters

message 103: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hopper | 2442 comments Sounds like great fun! I love trying to get my gophering down the week after Christmas. It gives me a lot to look forward too. I am terrible at guessing the hints though. But it was fun watching the old Certs commercial!

Grainne Coughlan | 1369 comments I am excited to find out too. Travel by land or rail? Twin cities? Chain links?

message 105: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4576 comments I thought I had an idea, but now with the latest clue - I am clueless!

Margo | 11674 comments Okayyy, that's as clear as mud but it does give me something chew on.

Twins
The happy wanderer
Chains

Hmmmm, thanks Janice.

By any chance would this be a music themed one?

message 108: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I can see why you would guess that, Viji, since my clues were given with song links.

All should be revealed tomorrow, I hope.

It really came with a twist! Thanks a for another innovative challenge.

Kabrada | 274 comments Being excited about the 2024 challenge has put me back into the groove for the 2023 one. I just finished my next book towards that. Only another four to go ...

message 115: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Yes, I have two to go, Kabrada. I'm really hoping to finish them on time. I think I can do it. You can finish your four too!

message 116: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I believe in you all! I have 5 books left, nearly finished 2. Have 3 more to go. Eek!

message 117: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments I finished another book and have started on the next one. Two more after that - it really seems doable now.

message 118: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments One more done! Only two books left now - it would be a shame if I didn't manage to finish those.

message 119: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments I feel the same way! Just two to go, but I'm making no progress yet.

message 120: by Kabrada (last edited Dec 14, 2023 02:10PM) (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments Just one left now. And the last one I read, Space Team, was a five-star book for me.

Now for the most difficult task: selecting a book from the Jester/Fool list. I started on two or three already, but nothing made me want to read on. Also, most of the books listed there are parts of series - series that I am not interested in reading.

I guess I'll try struggling through a few more chapters of The Lies of Locke Lamora in the hope that it'll either get me hooked or at least a little more interested in the story. The "intro" chapter was nice enough, but the story itself has been disappointing so far.

message 121: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Nice, Kabrada. There are a few on that list that I'd like to read and a few that I have already read. Most of the ones I read were ok reads, but I enjoyed Heartless by Marissa Meyer. If you end up deciding to go with something different check it out. I thought it was an interesting take on how the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland became the Queen of Hearts.

message 122: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 14, 2023 03:43PM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments I'm reading the second book, Kabrada, Red Seas Under Red Skies for the book task. It's the one that's gotten me a little stuck.

I love the complicated twists and intrigues of the world, I love the characters, the writing is also pretty great. It just is a very hard series to pick up and put down as there is so much going on.

I've been reading it since late October, and have put it down for challenge and toppler reads. Lexx was saying he just wouldn't have been able to do that with this series (he smashed through all three as soon as he could).

The other day I had time, so I sat down and devoured 150pp in one sitting which was so enjoyable. But reading 5pp or so at a time is just not the best for me with this series. So that's my thoughts, depends how much time you have to sit and soak in the world.

From that list, from what I've read I very much recommend Howl’s Moving Castle (that is a quick read too), and enjoyed Anansi Boys and Norse Mythology.

I have two more physical books to get through after that (I'm hoping I can get through the last 70pp on the weekend). Just started my last audiobook for the challenge.

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I loved the Locke Lamora books and really wish the series would be continued. The Thorn of Emberlain has been on hold for a number of years.

I agree! I check all of the time.

The Gentleman Bastard series changed my view of the high fantasy genre. I consider it mote mature than most

I think the world building is unique and I love the chemistry and banter between Locke, and Jean.

I wonder what they are up to now?

message 125: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments Thank you everyone for the comments and recommendations!
I guess my problem is that I am just not up to delving into a new-to-me fantasy world, nor for getting started on Norse Mythology, which has been on my TBR for a while now.

I just have to get into the right mood. (And if I don't, I'll pick one of the YA books or one aimed at teenies - those are usually a quick read. I won't let my badge be unachieved by one single book when there are more than two weeks left for reading it.)

message 126: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Kabrada - Not trying to push it on you, but just FYI, Heartless is YA and a standalone. It's set in the Alice in Wonderland world, so you're likely familiar with it, even if it is really a new perspective of the setting. Hope you find something that works for you.

message 127: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4576 comments I just popped in here to see what all the buzz was about and now have another series to add to my list. Thanks everyone. lol

message 128: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments Kristie, I have never read Alice in Wonderland, just know the general gist of the story and a few typical things that get referenced often. (My daughter actually was in a play a few years ago that had the story set in a psychiatric clinic, with the Queen of Hearts as a doctor, the Knave of Hearts as her assistant, and Alice, the Hatter, the March Hare, and the Caterpillar as patients - the latter being played by my daughter. It was entertaining, even without knowing the "real" story. I have been meaning to read the original ever since, but not managed that so far...)

message 129: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Oh, that must've been an interesting play, Kabrada! Great twist on the storyline.

message 132: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5203 comments Last time i saw a publication date for book #4 of the Gentleman Bastard series, it stated December 2024. But it keeps being pushed so do not hold your breath.

message 133: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I don't think I'm going to read book 4 if it ever gets published. I read my review for book 4, and noted that it was slow and almost a snoozefest in parts.

message 134: by Kabrada (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments I am still struggling with book #1, The Lies of Locke Lamora. Currently I am about halfway through. The pace is way too slow for my liking, and I am no fan of non-linear storytelling. But I am not giving up!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice wrote: "I loved the Locke Lamora books and really wish the series would be continued. The Thorn of Emberlain has been on hold for a number of years."

I agree, Janice. I really loved the books and really, really wish he could finish the last one too.

I just finished my last book post and put up my request for badge 2.

I am left with a whole spreadsheet full of book titles that fit a theme but have not been read, including 16 books that I did read for other puzzles that I could not report because they were "out of order". I need to update my 2023 GR challenge for these, I think.

message 136: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I will follow up with badges and tracking in the next day or two Cherie.

Woohhoo!! Go you good thing! I actually hope you enjoyed it even though it was a last book for the challenge read.

I am 43%+ through my last book

message 139: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11314 comments Great, Kabrada!

message 140: by Kabrada (last edited Dec 30, 2023 05:09AM) (new)

Kabrada | 274 comments Thanks!

I struggled through the first half of the book, but had fun reading it in the end. I took me so long because the whole familiy is home for the holidays, making this a busy time. Also, we're currently doing a nightly watch-a-thon of the LOTR movies (extended editions, naturally), so my reading time has been severely restricted for the past couple of days.

Rusalka wrote: "I am 43%+ through my last book "
Good luck with finishing it!

Kristie | 19335 comments Way to go, Kabrada!

I'm about 80% through my final book. I'm planning to finish it today. I'm just going to have to ignore my family for a bit. lol I'm sure they'll be fine.
