Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Most appropriate time. I read this as a "*WHOOP WHOOP* 2023 Challenge is imminent people!!" and spent the day gophering (and gardening and pickling, but you know)

message 52: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Haha, yes. I'm really excited to start this challenge. I'm almost done with my final book for the 2022 challenge. I will only get one badge this year instead of two, but I may go for two in 2023 again.

message 53: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments I feel like everyone I know thinks I am crazy that all I want is for midnight to come so I can start reading for 2023... It's my anniversary, which makes it weirder, but husband is visiting his dad, who is recovering from surgery and kid is at sleepover with friend. So just me, the wine, the pets (1 dog, 2 cats, 2 geckos) and the BOOKS!!!!

Sounds like a great way to start the new year!

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments Sounds awesome Beth! It's a great way to bring in the New Year. I know I'm not going to make midnight. I'm already so drowsy.

message 56: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Funny, Beth! I just finished my last book for the 2022 challenge, so I haven't been tortured by the wait yet. lol I am excited to start my new books tomorrow!

Margo | 11674 comments I started my first book of 2023 this morning and I'm not sure if it's going to fit the task I have it pegged for but I will enjoy finding out ;-)

message 58: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments Sometimes that's the way of it. You don't really know until you read the book.

You never know...it may fit one of the other tasks.

message 62: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I haven't finalized the tracking spreadsheet yet. I'm trying to decide how to approach it that will result in the least amount of work. You can call that procrastinating if you like. It's probably closer to the truth.

Please be patient with me, and I'll start tracking by the end of the week (hopefully).

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - are you going to make a Quick Link to the 2023 Member's Chanllenge thread. I find it wonderfully helpful! ;o)

message 66: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments It's a lot of work and I've decided to forego it this year. I suggest that you bookmark your page so that you can access it quickly. I link my page through my spreadsheet. Excel allows you to copy hyperlinks into a cell. so nifty.

Thanks, Janice. I understand.

message 68: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2091 comments I have a question about the page counts. I know if you read an ebook or audio book you go with the page count for the first paper edition. What if the paper edition listed on goodreads does not have a page number? Do we go with the 250 page rule with the ebook or should we check like Amazon for the page number of the paper edition? Sorry if I'm overthinking this.
Thank you!

message 69: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments You would go to the 250 page rule for an ebook, just as you would if there was only an ebook edition.

message 71: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 1009 comments I was just going through the rules carefully again and saw that we cannot start a next badge book until we have finished the prior badge. Just to confirm, does this mean if I have read a book this year and it fits a task but I havent finished badge 1, then I cannot use this book for badge 2?

message 72: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments That's correct Nistha. You must have completed badge 1 before you start on any badge 2 books. The same with the other badges.

message 73: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 1009 comments Okay, thanks for confirming Janice. Good thing I realised just 100 pages into a book I wanted to use for badge 2, will reread those pags then :)

message 74: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5203 comments quick question about the name tasks. I know we need to have the spelling right. Your example is Peter vs Peters. But would you accept the french name Pierre?

Asking as I have a few Edouard in my TBR.

message 75: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments If the book is in French, then I will accept the equivalent names.

message 77: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Would you consider a memoir that goes into the author's childhood a coming of age story?

message 78: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I think it's generally accepted that CoA is fiction. However, I found https://www.vocabulary.com/lists/hkhw.... What book were you considering?

message 79: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Thanks, Janice. That is what I figured, but thought I would ask.

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Lucas | 34 comments Hi, I'm new here so I'm not sure how this works. I see one of the older messages says we have to create our own challenge thread. Do I also have to make my own WoF one?

message 81: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3285 comments Welcome Rachel

If you go to the challenge thread you’ll see a plus sign on the top right. You will create your own thread. Name it whatever you want. That is where you will record all your yearly challenge reads.

If you go to the Wall Of Fame thread you will request your wall of fame name and then when you earn your first badge one of the mods will create your WoF page.

Hope that helps.

Kristie | 19335 comments Rachel wrote: "Hi, I'm new here so I'm not sure how this works. I see one of the older messages says we have to create our own challenge thread. Do I also have to make my own WoF one?"

Hi Rachel! Welcome to the group. As Marnie said above, you will create your own thread to participate in the challenge and a mod will create your WoF when you earn a badge.

You can set up your thread in this folder: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group.... Feel free to check out the threads other members created to see how they did it and create a thread that will work for you. You will report your reads for your annual challenges in that thread according to the challenge rules.

You can request your WoF name here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/.... Once the name is approved, Janice will save it for you until you earn a badge. You can earn a badge by participating in group reads, monthly challenges, topplers, and the annual challenge.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Janice, sorry for a very basic question, but as someone only just really starting to use audiobooks seriously for challenges I wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.

I have borrowed The Shifting Fog from the library. Understand the pages rule, makes complete sense. But what cover do I use for the cover task? The first listed edition is The Shifting Fog by Kate Morton but that isn't the cover I choose the book on. The audiobook "cover" is a version of this cover The Shifting Fog by Kate Morton

Which cover should I be using for the cover task?

I'll deal with the question of whether the cover even fits the task I picked it for later, as may be a non-issue. A month later, not 1am in the morning, not after looking at 60 pages of audiobook covers for an item, and not after a couple of glasses of wine, I'm doubting that decision lol

message 87: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19335 comments Rus, I always use the cover for the edition that I read. I think the first listed physical copy is only for pages. That's what I've said for audiobooks used in topplers too. Janice can correct me of course, but I thought that was what we decided upon a while back.

message 88: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Thanks Kristie. That's really helpful

message 89: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments I purchase most of my audiobooks from audible, and they show covers for them. I use that cover. My library even shows covers for audiobooks.

message 90: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments That makes complete sense. Was just making sure I use the audiobook cover, and didn't have to use the first listed edition cover.

Thanks both :D

Janice (jamasc) | 60097 comments Is everyone anxiously awaiting the reveal of 2024 challenge? I've been googling and learning some really cool things. I have just one more category to do, and then write up the preamble to the challenge. I've combined two challenges into one. It will be a challenge!

I really enjoy your yearly challenge. I learn a lot and read a lot of books the I would never have thought to read. Gophering for them is like a satisfying treasure hunt.

I can hardly wait!

I have no idea what this could be about! so excited for the reveal
My only guess is that each book might have two criteria to qualify for the double challenge.
