Looks like some authors have already started posting about being at BEA/signing at BEA.

Kim Liggett, debut author of BLOOD AND SALT (YA, Putnam/Penguin) will be signing at BEA on Friday:

https://twitter.com/Kim_Liggett/statu...

Bonnie (A Backwards Story) (abackwardsstory) | 36 comments This week at Apollycon, Susan Dennard mentioned that she was going to be there for TRUTHWITCH when we were chatting!

I also believe that some of the Fierce Reads authors being featured at BookCon will also be at BEA. Cindy Pon may only be at BookCon, but I'm hoping that's not so!

So... did you all notice that the Author Autographing area is on the complete opposite end of the conference hall from where it's been in recent years? I assume it has something to do with BookCon and how they will need to rearrange things between Friday and Saturday. But, all the big publishers are on the other side. This is going to make it much harder to squeeze in last minute signings. I anticipate doing much more walking this year than I have the last few.

I saw that, honestly I was worried they were going to put it in the North Pavillion, which would make it even harder to squeeze in signings (though it would make the lines easier to navigate the floor less crowded). I plan on having my FitBit by the time BEA runs around so I can keep somewhat accurate track XD

I had my fitbit last year and got well over 10,000 steps each day of BEA. I think one day was 15,000!

message 7: by Lexie (new)

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 657 comments Mod
Laura - I used my phone to track it and then my friend's fitbit at the other conference I do a lot of walking at (RTX, a gaming conference). According to my phone I barely walked 6,000 steps a day at BEA, and according to the fitbit I did something like 18 miles for the four days of RTX. Since I know I walk more at BEA then RTX I was kind of like "ehhhh????"

My girl Liza Wiemer will be signing copies of her debut novel HELLO? on Friday morning during BEA at the Spencer Hill Press booth!

I've read this book, and trust me, you want this book in your life. If you get no other book at BEA, make sure you grab this one!!!!!

Jessica | The Drowned Page (thedrownedpage) | 119 comments I'm getting my new FitBit soon, I have a flex now that I'm going to want to sell though because I want the Charge HR one instead. It keeps pretty accurate track though, I don't remember having it last year but I walked 10,000 steps at a zoo one day over the summer last year so I'm SURE there's way more walking than that at BEA.

Liza Wiemer Ashley wrote: "Would you suggest having twitter pre-loaded with notifications from pubishers for the drops at booths or do you find those elsewhere?"

That is an interesting idea, Ashley. So you're saying that publishers should have tweets ready to post with drops... It could work well, but the hard part is that internet is often sketchy at BEA, so it's iffy. But, word does spread.

message 19: by Lexie (new)

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 657 comments Mod
I've found the best way is word of mouth - at least insofar as the "impromptu" book drops go. Signings...those tend to be pretty much scheduled and that's when they happen. Sometimes if an author is VERY popular in the autographing area, and they either run over their time or have books left over, they'll set up another signing. Or things will get cancelled/moved for various reasons, but impromptu signings aren't the norm.

Most pubs will either post their (booth) schedules ahead of time (via twitter, blog, tumblr, scribed...) or have a handy list avail at the start of each day. For signings AND book drops. I wouldn't expect a lot of that for another 3 weeks or so. Usually BEA's site will post up the prelim schedule (it will change 30 times, including day of in some cases) and pubs will post leading up.

That said there are some booths that have less...structured signing schedules. Mystery/Horror Writers of America, Romance Writers of America - they tend to have more fluid schedules.

As Liza said internet is, at best, spotty int he Javits. I usually shut off twitter notifications and only have it "push" to me Text messages from pubs' twitter accounts, since that seems to a) save battery life and b) texts go through a lot easier than internet.

Britt - no. You definitely don't need to be a teen to attend the Harlequin Teen Hour. It's one of my favorite signings of the week, and I'm most definitely not a teen (I could be a teen's MOTHER!).

Harlequin likes to do multi-author in-booth signings, where you get in one line, and after all is said and done, you have four or five autographed books plus a tote bag in your hands. The Teen Hour features Harlequin young adult authors.

message 32: by Liza (new)

Liza Wiemer Regarding the Harlequin Teen Hour - get in line EARLY! An hour will do it. I waited for 45 minutes 2 years ago and they ended up running out of books. :(

Liza - TRUTH.

The past two years, I got in line about 75 minutes before go time, and I was close to the front of the line. The nice thing about Harlequin is, a lot of times, they send unscheduled authors to come do a drive-by signing. Two years ago, Dawn Metcalf came by with ARCs of Indelible to hand out and sign. It was so cool!

I waited like 1.5 hours last year and got a good spot in line. It gets pretty crazy.

Ha, as soon as the autographing list goes up, I will start my schedule. I already have it ready to go in a google drive.

Britt - Everything they said - get there EARLY. Super early. Make sure you prioritize your schedule. Know that lines for big authors (like Jen Armentrout, Sarah Maas, etc.) start sometimes 2 hours before. And multi-author signings (like the Harlequin Teen & other Harlequin signings) generally start lining up 1-2 hours before.

Krista and Nicole - Each year I'm finding that I have to plan things out and be more and more efficient with my time. With book drops thrown into the mix, it gets really tough running from one place to the next. I have found that once you're in line, people are nice about saving your spot if you need to run out for a bit—like a bathroom break. It'll be really interesting to see what happens when BEA moves to Chicago.

Weeeellll, I would say, especially for Bardugo, you should start lining up an hour early. But, last year, the volunteers who organize the lines were kinda being ridiculous about when people could start lines and such. Lots of times they tried to keep us from lining up until 15 minutes before the assigned start time of the signing. It was very frustrating.

I didn't run into any issues with lining up early. Often times at least 1 hour ahead of time. They just moved us from one location to another. Last year, they assigned a person to hold up a sign that named the author. It does help if you're with someone. That way, you can take turns!

It also depends on if the signing is an in-booth signing, or a signing in the author area. The in-booth areas really cut down on lining up early. Rainbow Rowell's in-booth last year was a mess.

For in booth signings, they often hand out numbers - once they run out of numbers, that's it. My suggestion, if you REALLY want a book from an author signing at a booth, check in early and ask if they'll be passing out numbers. Then go back, get your number and you have more free time to go to other events. I still recommend, though, that you line up a 1/2 early, even with a ticket.

Yeah. I missed Rainbow's ticket because they told me I couldn't line up and to come back later. I went to the booth not too long after and all the tickets were gone.
