Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments PERSONAL CHALLENGE #1 - MY ULTIMATE TOP 100 LIST

The main objective of this open-ended challenge, is to begin catching up on all the classics I’ve neglected for, well... most of my life.

Even though this has been one of my aims for the longest time, my main issue was always figuring out how to go about it - there are a gazillion variations of "top-100-books" and "books-to-read-before-you-die" lists, after all.

To solve this problematic, in 2018, I decided to compile my own personal list, by comparing the collective wisdom from various sources.
The first step was obviously to figure out how much overlap existed between the selected five lists.
Next, it was time to consolidate. So, I created a new list based on each book's recurrence. In other words, a bookish popularity contest: the more often a book was referred to by the aforementioned lists, the higher that book would rank in my new and improved "books-to-read-before-you-die" list.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments PERSONAL CHALLENGE #2 - GOODREADS CHOICE AWARDS 2022

Since 2018, it's been a personal challenge of mine to read as many of the "Best books" from the Goodreads Choice Awards as I can.

The way I do it, is pretty straight forward: There are 17 categories, from which I might choose books that might be of interest me.
In 2023, I'll be picking books from 10 genres, that are relevant to me and my reading.

Now, ideally, and in the spirit of getting out of my comfort zone, I'd read at least one book from each category.
Even though there are certain categories I'm simply not forcing upon myself, I'll still be pushing for a minimum of one book in other areas.

For a few categories, I've already read the "winner" prior to the announcement, in which case I'll be choosing a "runner-up". In some cases, the nominees are part of a series, in which case I'll obviously pick up the first book in that series instead.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments PERSONAL CHALLENGE #4 - READING AROUND THE WORLD

Inspired by writer Ann Morgan's challenge (https://ayearofreadingtheworld.com/th...) to read a book from every country, this is my attempt to expand my horizons by reading more globally. My personal take to this challenge, however, isn't limited to a single year, but is instead a continuous goal.

The sole requirement for this challenge, is that the books be written by authors from the designated country or take place in said region.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments 2nd QUARTER CHALLENGE - OUT OF THIS WORLD
April 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023

Goal: 6

1 and 2. KEPLER-16B - A real life Tatooine, this planet was Kepler's first discovery of a planet that orbits two stars, what is known as a circumbinary planet.
▪ Read a duology.
The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1) by Mary Doria Russell Children of God (The Sparrow, #2) by Mary Doria Russell

3. KEPLER-452 B - One of the most Earth-like planets yet discovered, with almost the same exact size, placement, and habitable zone as Earth. Unfortunately, it's more than 1,000 light years away.
▪ Read a Science Fiction book about humans traveling to live on other planets or read an alternate history book.

4. 55 CANCRI E - One of the first super-Earth planets to be discovered, it was originally thought that to be so abundant in carbon that, due to the immense pressure and 2,700 degree temperatures, its interior was made of diamond. More recent research has contested this assertion, but the nature of the planet's interior remains enigmatic.
▪ Read a book that features a wealthy character or where diamonds play a key role in the plot.

5. TRES-2 B - Identified by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, it is the darkest known exoplanet, reflecting less than 1% of any light that hits it.
▪ Read a book with a primarily black cover or a book by a BIPOC author.

6. HR 5183 B - A slow-moving exoplanet three times larger than Jupiter, this planet has a bizarre orbit where it loiters on the outer reaches of its system before slingshotting into the center, passing close to its host star before peeling away again. This strange orbit has earned it the nickname of the "whiplash planet."
▪ Read a book with a shocking plot twist or a thriller novel.

7. TOI-1452 B - A large exoplanet thought to be 70% bigger than Earth, astronomers believe water could make up as much as 30% of its mass (compared to Earth, where water is 1% of our mass).
▪ Read a book that takes place underwater or on the ocean.

8. TYC 8998-760-1 B - This gas giant and its companion orbit an extremely young Sun-like star presumed to be only about 17 million years old. Its planets are likely also brand new and radiate a glow that can be seen by telescopes.
▪ Read an author's debut book or a book published in 2023.

9. PSR B1620-26 B - The oldest known planet, at somewhere around 12.7 billion years old. That's only a little younger than the universe itself!
▪ Read a book you've owned for a long time or a book set in ancient times.

10. WASP-76B - This planet is tidal locked to its parent star: one side permanently faces its star, causing scorching hot temperatures around 4,532°F - hot enough to vaporize iron.
▪ Read a book set in the desert or a hot place.

11. GLIESE 1132B - This Earth-like planet is much closer to its parent star, creating higher surface temperatures. Astronomers have recently discovered that the gravitational influence of the star creates intense tidal forces that "flex" the planet. The flexing creates intense volcanic activity which causes gases to rise to the surface - and those gases are creating a unique second atmosphere.
▪ Read a sequel or a book where a character who is thought to be gone comes back again.

12. HD 189773B - This world is only 64 light years away and looks like a deep blue marble. But its pleasant exterior is deceiving, as winds on this planet blow at 8,700 km/h. Not only that, but the deep blue color is a reflection of the silicate in its atmosphere which, when heated by the planet's deadly 1300°C, forms grains of glass.
▪ Read a book with unexpected danger or a book with a blue cover.

13. TOI 849 - This exoplanet orbits so tightly to its star that a year passes in 18 hours. It is dense and rocky, not gaseous, despite being 40 times as massive as Earth. It may even be the first Chthonian planet to be detected: the exposed remnant core of a gas giant that has had its atmosphere blasted away.
▪ Read a book less than 200 pages or more than 500 pages.

14. GJ-504B - A newly formed exoplanet in the Virgo constellation, this planet orbits its star at nearly nine times the distance Jupiter orbits the sun. Due to its newness, it glows a deep magenta.
▪ Read a book with a pink cover or a book about a new relationship.

15. OGLE-2005-BLG-390LB - Orbiting a red dwarf, this planet is too far away to receive much warmth from its star. It is one of the coldest known planets in the universe with a freezing surface temperature of -220°C (-364°F). The entire planet is covered with a thick layer of ice and it is unlikely any life could survive on the surface, though astronomers believe it is possible life survives underneath the ice.
▪ Read a book set in a cold place or during winter.

16. TRES-4B - Despite being one of the largest exoplanets discovered, this planet has an extremely low density - about the same as a cork. Astronomers attribute this to the extreme heat of 2300 °F (1260 °C) due to its proximity to the star. At only 4.5 million miles (7.2 million kilometers) away from its sun, TrES-4b is able to complete an orbit in three Earth days.
▪ Read a lighthearted book or a book with a happy ending.

17. HD 106906 - Located 300 light years from Earth in the constellation of Crux, it orbits its star at a distance of 60 billion miles - 20 times the distance between the Sun and Neptune. Estimated to be about eleven times the mass of Jupiter, it is unknown how this planet formed or how it came to have such a distant orbit from its star. Despite being so far from the warmth of its star, it still has a scorching surface temperature of 1500 °C (2732 °F) and still glows from the residual heat left over from its formation.
▪ Read a mystery novel or a book where a character's motivations are unknown.

18. PSR J1719-14 B - Orbiting a pulsar star, this planet completes its orbital rotation extremely quickly - in only 2.2 hours.
▪ Read a book you can finish in one sitting.

19. WASP 12B - A doomed planet being torn apart by its star's scorching heat. In 10 million years, this world could be completely consumed.
▪ Read the final book in a series or a book where a character disappears or dies.

20. 1SWASP J1407B - Located around 420 light-years in the constellation of Centaurus, the planet has the most exotic ring system ever discovered, around 200 times bigger than Saturn’s rings. Unfortunately, travelling to see it would take over seven million years.
▪ Read a book with multiple POVs or a book where the characters travel a long journey.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments 3rd QUARTER CHALLENGE - TERRA INCOGNITA
July 1, 2023 - September 30, 2023

1. The Darién Gap: So inhospitable is this 60-mile (96-kilometer) nugget of marshland and rainforest between Panama and Colombia that, even in our high-tech age of 3D printing, space tourism, and undersea railways, we still haven’t built a road that connects North and South America.
• Read a book set in an inhospitable or dangerous place, or where travel is often conducted with pirogues or canoes.
• Read a book set in Panama or Colombia, or a book with vegetation on the cover.

2. Gangkhar Puensum: There remain dozens of mountains that have never been conquered. The tallest is almost certainly Gangkhar Puensum in Bhutan, which tops out at 24,836 feet (7,570 meters). The country prohibits mountaineering, partly because its biggest peaks are considered sacred, but also because it lacks suitable rescue services.
• Read a book set in a sacred place, or set in a place where some sport or activity is banned.
• Read a book set in Bhutan or Tibet, or a book with a mountain on the cover.

3. Sakha: Officially the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the largest republic of Russia has a reputation for an extreme and severe climate, with the lowest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere in winter at -32º F (-35.5º C). In summer, the mercury regularly tops 86º F (30º C).
• Read the longest book in your TBR shelf, or a book set during a cold winter or a hot summer.
• Read a book set in Siberia, or a book with a very long title.

4. Vale do Javari: One of the largest indigenous territories in Brazil, it is named after the Javari River, the most important river of the region. Since 1851, this river has formed the border with Peru.
• Read a book involving indigenous people, or activities which endanger their habitat (such as drug trafficking, poaching, logging, mining, etc.).
• Read a book set in Brazil or Peru, or a book about an unknown civilization.

5. Fiordland National Park: This park contains the majority of the largest area of unmodified vegetation in New Zealand. It is also a significant refuge for many threatened native animals, ranging from dolphins and bats to reptiles, insects, and birds.
• Read a book involving animals or plants, or set in a national park.
• Read a book set in New Zealand, or a book with a body of water on the cover.

6. Son Doong Cave: Located near the Laos–Vietnam border, Hang Sơn Đoòng has an internal, fast-flowing subterranean river and the largest cross-section of any cave, worldwide. It is the largest known cave passage in the world by volume.
• Read a book involving a cave or river, or about something mysterious or dark.
• Read a book set in Viet Nam or Laos, or in a fictional or fantasy world.

7. The Deep Sea: We know more about the surface of Mars than we do about the bottom of the ocean, so one could be forgiven for believing that trips to the depths are limited to marine biologists. In fact, there are options for ordinary tourists like diving hotspots in Curacao and Honduras.
• Read a book taking place under water, or about any form of marine life.
• Read a book set in the Caribbean, or a book with an aquatic animal on the cover.

8. Cape Melville National Park: Walled off by forbidding granite boulders, Cape Melville is only around 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) from Brisbane, one of Australia’s biggest cities, but the rainforest habitat might as well be a world away. Virtually inaccessible except by helicopter, scientists discovered three new-to-science species of animals in the area in 2013.
• Read a book involving any form of impenetrability, or a paranormal book.
• Read a book set in Australia, or a book with an aircraft or wall on the cover.

9. Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park: Located in northwest Madagascar, this national park is home to an exceptionally large number of endemic species of plants and animals that are only found within extremely small niches in the tsingys. The word tsingy can be translated into English as "where one cannot walk barefoot."
• Read a book involving endemic species, or a book where footwear plays an important role.
• Read a book set in Madagascar, or with “island” in the title.

10. Rub’ al Khali: Literally meaning “The Empty Quarter," this is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world. The 250,000 square miles (647, 497 square kilometers) of dunes straddle Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The only signs of life are scorpions, the occasional bird, or a camel carcass.
• Read a book set in an extremely hot place, or involving oil or fossil fuel.
• Read a book set in the Arabian Peninsula, or a book originally written in Arabic.

11. Namib Desert: A coastal desert in Southern Africa, the name means “vast place.” The Namib stretches for more than 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa.
• Read a book involving coastal living, or a book that is part of a series.
• Read a book set in Angola, Namibia or South Africa, or with arthropods on the cover (insects, arachnids, myriapods or crustaceans).

12. Patagonia: This geographical region encompasses the southern end of South America, and is governed by Argentina and Chile. The region comprises the southern section of the Andes Mountains with lakes, fjords, temperate rainforests, and glaciers in the west and deserts, tablelands and steppes to the east.
• Read an outdoor or travel book, or a book set in a mountainous or desert region.
• Read a book set in Argentina or Chile, or a book originally written in Spanish.

13. Kamchatka: Russia’s eastern peninsula is home to some of the most spectacular volcanic activity on Earth, with more than 300 volcanoes, including one that has been erupting continuously since 1996. It’s also home to the most diverse range of salmon species and is the most densely populated brown bear habitat in the world.
• Read a book including thermal springs, volcanoes, or glaciers, or involving fish or wild animals.
• Read a book set in an extremely cold place, or with a one word title.
