Dj | 2364 comments 1. Only One
USS Arizona
The last ship left from the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th. It isn't actually a survivor having been sunk and then set up as a Memorial to all the sailors that died that day.

2. Binary
Alan Turing: The Enigma Man
One of the individuals who helped break the Enigma Code that the Germans were using during WWII. Didn't quite get the rewards or accolades he deserved since at the time his lifestyle was illegal in the UK.

3. Threes Company
Dreadmarrow Thief
There are three individuals on the cover, so it seems to fit.

4. Four Corners of the Earth
Atlas Obscura 2nd Edition
This is a book that takes some very strange places to visit and gives a little write-up about them. There is a website for this group that I have looked at from time to time. One of my favorite entries is about a liberal arts college in Portland Oregon has its own nuclear reactor. Now if that doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy about living in Portland nothing will. LOL

5. Five-Finger Discount
Growing up in Bay City. This is about growing up in a small town, or village, on the coast of Oregon. It caught my interest since I have actually been there and they have a pretty good seafood restaurant that looks like it is in a warehouse. More on the five-finger discount part of it later.

6. All Sixes and Sevens
Halsey's Typhoon, being caught in a ship of any size in a Typhoon sounds like a difficult situation

7. Showstopper
I am Legend.
The concept seems to indicate that the world as we know it has come to an end. Kind of a Showstopper.

8. Book page total ends in 8
Furies of Calderon

9. Nine-to-five
The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths and Magic
The MC gets a part-time job at the beginning of the book.

10. Top Ten
Ten Restaurants that Change America
Maybe not a true top ten list, but an interesting one.

11. From the Library
Goblin Emperor
From the Club Library

12. Let's try this again
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
This would be the third time starting this book. Maybe the third time a lucky change

13. Sweet Revenge
Witchmark
It starts out as a kind of murder mystery, so there may have revenge in there somewhere

14. Technical Challenge
The Word for World is Forest
It seems that some technical ability to live in a world like that.

15. My Old Friend
The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack
It seems friends have a falling out in this book

16. Scrumptious
A Scone to Die For
A cozy mystery involving a tea shop

17. Cover with text only, no images
The Mote in God's Eye
At least it is only text on the cover I have

18. Around the Shelf
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City
On the Group read shelf

19. Bingeworthy
What if? 2
The questions are so off the wall and the answers so hilariously serious I really can't get enough

20. Zero to Hero
She Who Became the Sun.
Since she starts out poor and starving and according to the title becomes the Sun, it would seem to fit.

Meredith | 1777 comments I changed up a couple picks from my first version, and shuffled some picks among the prompts.

20/20

✔️ 1. Only one - The Light Brigade, main character is the only one with different experiences and it's a standalone book
✔️ 2. Binary - Crosstalk, two characters are surgically connected to share emotions
✔️ 3. Three's company - Into the Windwracked Wilds, 3rd in a series/trilogy
✔️ 4. Four corners of the earth - The World We Make, includes avatars of cities from around the world.
✔️ 5. Five Finger Discount - The Fuller Memorandum, there is a theft.
✔️ 6. At sixes and sevens - Broken Homes, main character is always at sixes and sevens in this series.
✔️ 7. Showstopper - The Poison Master, poison is a show stopper of sorts, swapped in Phantom Pains which is set in Hollywood and the goings-on actually do stop production of a tv show.
✔️ 8. Book page total ends in an 8 - The Winter Long, 348 pages also 8th book in the series
✔️ 9. Nine-to-five -Lavender House, book is set in 1952, a number that has a 9, a 5, and a t(w)o
✔️ 10. Top 10 - Small Favor, #10 in the Harry Dresden series
✔️ 11. From the library - The Bat, bought at my library's used book sale
✔️ 12. Let's try this again -Changed pick to The Angel of the Crows, which I tried reading once before and it didn't grab me. Cold Fire, #2 in a trilogy that I keep meaning to get back to
✔️ 13. Sweet Revenge - Tears of Pearl, killer driven by vengeance
✔️ 14. Technical Challenge- Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe, circumnavigating the globe is definitely a technical challenge. then I thought the flu book... Terminal Uprising, where our heros face many challenges in getting to earth. It also turned into a technical challenge to find a book for this, I changed my pick twice.
✔️ 15. My old friend - After Atlas, investigating the murder of someone from their past.
✔️ 16. Scrumptious - Fuzzy Nation, the little fuzzy dudes sound scrumptious.
✔️ 17. Cover with text only, no images - Me Talk Pretty One Day, Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris .
✔️ 18. Around the Shelf - Stranger in a Strange Land, SFFBC bookshelf that has been around my TBR shelf the longest. Changed to Codex, which I found on my shelf when I was trying to find matches for the prompts and it about libraries.
✔️ 19. Bingeworthy - The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories, I look forward to binging the stories in this collection. Changed to Of Wars, and Memories, and Starlight Aliette deBodard collection which was very bingable.
✔️ 20. Zero to hero - Djinn City, seems to describe the MC’s trajectory in this book. Swapped to An Accident of Stars, which has an MC on a similar trajectory.

Ones changed from the first version of picks

Sarah | 3167 comments Alright, I'm going to try this differently and give myself a few options so I won't feel bad when I inevitably swap them out.

(7/20)
1. Only one - Zone One by Colson Whitehead (One in the title/Standalone)
2. Binary - Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder (Shapeshifter/Werewolf could be described as binary - composed of two things)
3. Three's company - Getaway by Zoje Stage (Three friends on a getaway trip)
4. Four corners of the earth - The End of the Ocean by Maja Lunde (One of the MCs is on a voyage to cross the ocean - thereby traveling to the four corners of the earth?)
5. Five Finger Discount - The Pariah by Anthony Ryan (MC is a thief)
6. At sixes and sevens - All's Well by Mona Awad (book about a confused and poorly organized play)
7. Showstopper - Run Time by Catherine Ryan Howard (killer on a movie set - sounds like a literal showstopper)
8. Book page total ends in an 8 - Red Island House by Andrea Lee (288 pages)
9. Nine-to-five - Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt (MC works the night shift at a museum)
10. Top 10 - The Handmaid's Tale
11. From the library - Out There: Stories (borrowed audio from the library)
12. Let's try this again - The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez (started this year but never got around to finishing)
13. Sweet Revenge - The Revenant by Michael Punke (MC is on a quest for revenge)
14. Technical Challenge - The Passage by Justin Cronin (technically challenging to my short attention span because it's so long....)
15. My old friend - War Lord by Bernard Cornwell (final book in a favorite series)
16. Scrumptious - White Shark by Peter Benchley (The shark in this book is bound to find something scrumptious)
17. Cover with text only, no images - The It Girl by Ruth Ware
18. Around the Shelf - Spirits Abroad
19. Bingeworthy - The River by Peter Heller (Feels weird calling something bingeworthy before reading it, but I've been seeing a lot about the author lately so I'm hoping it will be, and reserving the right to change it to something else)
20. Zero to hero - Black Tide by K.C. Jones (From a quote in the blurb: "These two self-destructive souls must find in each other the strength to overcome past pain and the fight to survive a nightmare of apocalyptic scale.")

Saar The Book owl | 161 comments Not giving up and trying again. Will gopher a bit later for books, but now just posting my list.

1. Only one Beren and Lúthien: the 2nd book of LOTR got me stopping reading Tolkien's books, but I'll give this one a try.
2. Binary
3. Three's company The Three-Body Problem
4. Four corners of the earth
5. Five Finger Discount (view spoiler)
6. At sixes and sevens (view spoiler)
7. Showstopper
8. Book page total ends in an 8 The Prodigal Mage: this duology has been gathering dust on my bookshelves for so many years, so this is part one with 503 pages.
9. Nine-to-five
10. Top 10
11. From the library
12. Let's try this again Dune: it's not the book, it's me. I was reading the book and saw the movie, when still reading and then, stopped. It's a great book and a shame that I haven't finish it.
13. Sweet Revenge
14. Technical Challenge
15. My old friend The Scorpio Races: I reread this book a couple of times a year, so yes, it's an old friend.
16. Scrumptious
17. Cover with text only, no images
18. Around the Shelf
19. Bingeworthy Nevernight. Alba oscura: I've read the previous two and need to finish the last one, but I don't want it to end. It was so good!
20. Zero to hero Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire I've been rereading, but not ever finished the series. This year I finished book one and in 2023 I want to read them all. I'm a huge HP - fan, but there are so many other interesting books!

message 55: by Kristin (last edited Dec 02, 2023 01:39PM) (new)

Kristin (krispymac) | 32 comments Happy anniversaries SFFBC! It’s the most wonderful time of the year - the time when I review all the books I own and haven’t read, but I’m not feeling guilty about it because I’m excited to make a new list. Thank you, Mods, for this once a year opportunity.
2023-12-02 update: 18/20 This is already the best I've ever done on this challenge.

1. Only one: Circe, Madeline Miller
- Pretty much everyone I know who has read this book has recommended it. I think I’m the only one who hasn’t read this book... yet!
2. Binary: The City in the Middle of the Night, Charlie Jane Anders*
- Set on a dying planet, one side is a “frozen darkness” and the other a “blazing, endless sunshine”
3. Three's company: The Witches of New York, Ami McKay*
- Three main characters
4. Four corners of the earth: Future Fiction: New Dimensions in International Science Fiction, Francesco Verso and Bill Campbell, eds.*
- I read the first story at a used bookshop somewhere in New Mexico almost a year ago while on vacation. At the end of the story, I was sitting in the store sobbing big alligator tears, the good “my heart is so full right now” kind of alligator tears. I needed time to sort through all the feels before picking this up again.
5. Five Finger Discount: Pacifica, Kristen Simmons*
- Changed the book midyear. One of the MCs is a pirate. I'm stretching this a bit since she's not like a pickpocket or regular thief.
6. At sixes and sevens: 666 Park Avenue, Gabriella Pierce*
- Dealing with upper-crust elitism sounds like a terrifying and difficult situation. Oh yeah, there are witches too. Bonus for having three 6s in the title.
7. Showstopper: Man in the Empty Suit, Sean Ferrell
Wanted to finish: The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, Janelle Monáe*
- Monáe IS a showstopper!
8. Book page total ends in an 8: City of Dark Magic, Magnus Flyte (448 in my edition)*
- Kind of wishing I’d found a 228 or 18 page book.
9. Nine-to-five: Moonshine, Jasmine Gower*
- “Daisy's starting a new job and stylish city life, but mage-hunters out for her dark magic threaten to destroy her vogue image.” Hope the benefits are good.
10. Top 10: The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, Sangu Mandanna
- Top 10 finalist in 2022 Fantasy on Goodreads
11. From the library: The Midnight Library, Matt Haig
12. Let's try this again: Pieces of Happiness, Anne Ostby
- Friends reunite.
13. Sweet Revenge: The Iron Children, Rebecca Fraimow
- One character wants revenge on the culture that wronged them.
14. Technical Challenge: All Systems Red, Martha Wells*
- Saw this quote on the book’s kindle page "As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure." Sounds like a technical challenge!
15. My old friend: Meddling Kids, Edgar Cantero*
- a Scooby-doo-like gang reunites to solve a cold case. Re-solve a cold case?
16. Scrumptious: A Taste of Sage, Yaffa S. Santos
Wanted it to be: Chocolat, Joanne Harris*
- Chocolate is delicious. Of course.
17. Cover with text only, no images: On Love, Alain de Botton*
- I wish I was more excited about this, but it’s not too long and I’ve had it for ages.
On Love by Alain de Botton
18. Around the Shelf: The Burning Page, Genevieve Cogman*
- Next in the series about my favorite librarian spy
19. Binge Worthy: A Court of Thorns and Roses, Sarah J. Maas
- On the Binge-worthy list on Goodreads and also already on my virtual TBR.
20. Zero to hero(ine): Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts, Kate Racculia*
- I love the MC name and title. Tuesday must be a heroine.

(* = I already own it in some format.)
I have alternates that I'll add in a spoiler later.

(It involves a sea voyage.)

(338 pages.)

2. Binary - The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (two characters in the title)

3. Three's company - The Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse (third book in this series)

4. Four corners of the earth - We, the Drowned by Carsten Jensen (century-long saga, which appears to involve a lot of sailing around the world)

5. Five Finger Discount - The Crown Conspiracy by Michael Sullivan (main characters are a thief and a mercenary)

6. At sixes and sevens - Na Viro by Gina Cole (it sounds like the main character has to struggle with several dilemmas)

8. Book page total ends in an 8 - Lost in the Moment and Found by Seanan McGuire (ebook is 208 pages, and, as a bonus, it is book 8 in this series)

10. Top 10 - Jollof Rice and Other Revolutions: A Novel in Interlocking Stories by Omolola Ijeoma Ogunyemi (contains ten stories)

11. From the library - Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling (I plan to borrow the ebook from my library)

12. Let's try this again - The River of Silver: Tales from the Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty (stories revisit the world, events, and characters from her Daevabad trilogy)

13. Sweet Revenge - Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee (main character wants to kill the monsters who took her family)

14. Technical Challenge - The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. LeGuin (I love LeGuin's children's and YA books, but I often struggle with her adult novels. This one has been on my to-read list for a while.)

15. My old friend - Lost Places by Sarah Pinsker (I love Sarah Pinsker, and I've already read at least two of the stories in this collection published elsewhere.)

16. Scrumptious - Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (I think the title says it all :-)

17. Cover with text only, no images - Drunk on All Your Strange New Words by Eddie Robson (the cover on Goodreads is just text)

18. Around the Shelf - Here and Now and Then by Mike Chen (on the group bookshelf)

19. Bingeworthy - A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher (I binged a bunch of her books in 2022, and I'm sure I'll binge this one too.)

20. Zero to hero - The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal (main character is trying to become the first Lady Astronaut in a world that appears to think woman can't hold that role)

For the TBR you can start a separate list of books you want to read by going to Books and edit, you can add books to your want-to-read list. For the challenge itself, you don't have to pull your books from there but it might make it easier to start.

Edwin, your list inspired me to add We, the Drowned to mine. :-)

I've had the book on my physical bookshelf for several years now, mostly neglected, despite several recommendations from friends. I'm hoping 2023 is the year I actually read it.

Cheryl L | 415 comments It's my first time giving this a go, and coincidentally, I had just made a very long list of science fiction titles that I wanted to read.

1. Only one: Neuromancer– one-word title (a bit lame, but this book was going on the list somewhere!)

2. Binary: The Female Man – placed on this category for the gender binary in the title but chosen for the broader exploration of gender

✅3. Three's company: A Court of Wings and Ruin, third in the series

4. Four corners of the earth: I haven't decided on this one yet

5. Five-Finger Discount: The Weirdness – I originally picked this one up as a gift because of the cover art and the deal with the devil but have had it on my list for several years now. The protagonist must steal The Neko of Infinite Equilibrium.

✅6. At sixes and sevens: Good Omens – the antichrist ends up switched at birth

7. Showstopper: Kindred – adapted into a series; I have shockingly never read any Octavia Butler

8. Book page total ends in an 8: The Dark Forest – the second book in The Remembrance of Earth's Past series by Cixin Liu; 518 pages

9. Nine-to-five: Severance – the protagonist continues to show up to her office job during a "zombie" apocalypse

10. Top 10: The Fire Upon the Deep – this book has shown up on several top 10 lists that I've looked at; it was also featured on a recent Geeks Guide to the Galaxy and I am extremely intrigued

11. From the library: The Windup Girl – in my library, waiting to be read. I gave up on this one. I just get a little tired of the abused female character written by a man. Too Tess of the D'urbervilles again and again.

12. Let's try this again: Sandman – I adored the Netflix series but have trouble reading graphic novels; I tried reading this in late summer but only got about a quarter of the way through

✅13. Sweet Revenge: Ancillary Justice – "a burning desire for vengeance"

14. Technical Challenge: The Calculating Stars – the desperate need to get off Earth before catastrophic climate change caused by a meteorite

15. My old friend: The Sea of Tranquility – there's mention of an encounter with an old friend in the description

✅16. Scrumptious: The Light From Uncommon Stars – Doughnuts! Need I say more??

✅17. Cover with text only, no images: Drunk on All Your Strange New Words – well, there are some concentric circles but no drawings

18. Around the Shelf: The Dispossessed – Taken from the SciFi and Fantasy Bookshelf; I've been wanting to read more of The Hainish Cycle after the Left-Hand of Darkness

✅19. Bingeworthy: A Court of Thorn and Roses – gifted by a friend a few weeks ago; I'm terrified to even start this due to how quickly I read the entire Throne of Glass series

✅20. Zero to hero: Gideon the Ninth – From indentured servant to savior with necromancers. Oh yeah!

Great list, Cheryl! You have a few books I love on there (and a few that I put on my list, too). I also have a hard time with graphic novels, and I found that the full cast audiobook of The Sandman was much more accessible to me than the comics. I wouldn't have thought you could turn a graphic novel into an audiobook, but it was really well done.

Thanks, Kaia! I was looking through other people's lists to fill some of the holes in mine. I still haven't decided on 4 Corners of the Earth. entry yet. Which of the ones on my list are some of your faves? I've got one Le Guin on my list but I really want to read the Lathe of Heaven also. And it looks like we share Drunk on All of Your Strange New Words and The Calculating Stars. It would be fun to discuss!

And thanks for the tip on the Sandman audiobook. I might listen to it with the book in hand.

I love The Lord of the Rings trilogy but will admit that The Two Towers is the toughest of those books. I've joked that the characters are either running around Middle Earth or lost through 3/4 of the book.

I had ordered all three through Scholastic Book Services at school and for some reason the first volume wasn’t included when the order came. Petar | 108 comments As always, I'm enjoying seeing everyone's selections.

1. Only one - Absolute Pandemonium: My Louder Than Life Story - Brian Blessed - There is only one Brian Blessed.

2. Binary - The Anomaly - Herve Le Tellier - A story that apparently involves doppelgängers.

3. Three's company - Sin City, Vol. 6: Booze, Broads, and Bullets - Frank Miller.

6. At sixes and sevens -Pines - Blake Crouch - The protagonist is stuck in the town of Wayward Pines with no ID and no way to contact the outside world. He is certainly at sixes and sevens.

7. Showstopper - The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory - Brian Greene. The theory of everything would be the ultimate showstopper.

8. Book page total ends in an 8 - Sailing to Freedom: Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad - Timothy D. Walker - 248 pages.

9. Nine-to-five - Martian Time-Slip - Philip K Dick. Nine to five? Is that a time slip?

11. From the library -Inkheart - Cornelia Funke. A book about a book.

12. Let's try this again - Fear Agent: Final Edition, Volume 1 - Rick Remender. A down and out alien exterminator must return to his old job as a peacekeeper to save humanity.

13. Sweet Revenge -Nevernight - Jay Kristoff. A girl joins a school for assassins to take revenge on those that destroyed her family.

14. Technical Challenge - The Stone Sky - N.K. Jemisin - Drawing the moon back into Earth’s orbit is a technical challenge indeed.

15. My old friend - Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. A book about two unlikely friends written by two old friends.

16. Scrumptious - How to Make Gravy - Paul Kelly. Hmmm…. Gravy.

17. Cover with text only, no images - Dark Matter - Blake Crouch.

18. Around the Shelf - Double Star - Robert A. Heinlein. The oldest Hugo Award winner that I’ve not read yet; ie, it’s been hanging around the shelf for a while.

19. Bingeworthy - Saga, Volume 11 - Brian K Vaughan & Fiona Staples. Saga is definitely bingeworthy.

20. Zero to hero - Ordinary Gods, Vol. 1: God Spark - Kyle Higgins. A lowly paint store employee must re-connect with his heritage and become a God again.
