Weirdly I struggled to find books on my TBR, but had no problem finding books to recommend. Skinwalker by Faith Hunter has been on my TBR for the longest time, so that's what I'll read:
I'd recommend:

Tilda wrote: "Dancing on Ropes: Translators and the Balance of History"@Tilda - this looks really interesting. It would have been a good choice for the prompt that didn't make it "a book where language and/or the spoken word is important". Maybe I'll use it for "Suggested prompt that didn't make it"!
I'm not sure where I will place this book but this prompt is an option. I will be reading it over the next 2 months.
I read West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge. I liked it a lot and it would be a good pairing with reading The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.
Moving this book for a better fit to prompt:
A look at the end of communism in Bulgaria - corruption and greed, and particularly the failure to properly warn the general population about the fallout from Chernobyl.
I found this a difficult book to come to grips with. I had to google to find out about various events (so I did learn a bit about Bulgaria), and I actually re-read the book to understand it better (it is really a novella). There is a shift in narration, and also we are not sure what has actually happened and what one narrator is imagining as having happened. I liked some of the writing, but I think that someone from Bulgaria would get a lot more from this book than I did - unlike say
which dealt with some of the same ideas, but was much more approachable.
I read Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal, a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in Pakistan. A fun, easy read.
I am reading 'The Colours of all the Cattle' by Alexander McCall Smith. I can recommend Connie's Courage by Annie Groves and The Newcomer by Fern Britton.
A scifi/dystopian novella set in the aftermath of a nuclear war, amongst a group of privileged survivors. Written in 1967 but makes some very prescient comments about inequality, democracy and refugees.
It would also fit Author from continental Europe - Danish author and book in translation .
So far this year I've read these that fit this prompt :
I will edit this post when/if there are more.
I will probably use Remarkably Bright Creaturesfor the prompt ( which Id give 6 stars if I could!)
So far, this is the hardest prompt for me! I can only find 5 books that I own: Time Out of Joint by PK Dick, Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann, and Prague Cemetery by Umberto Eco. I’m trying to focus on books I own for the rest of the year. Probably save this one until the end of the challenge.
I read ...
The Owl & Moon Cafe – Jo-Ann Mapson – 3***
Four generations of women work hard to support themselves with their small café, while giving to the community in their northern California town. As happens in real life, things get messy. Major illness, loss of a job, bullying and strained budgets are stressing all the Moon women. Not to mention a couple of men added to the mix. Secrets will come out. Fights will be had. Tears will be shed. At the end, I’m certain the Moon women will find a way to deal with whatever life throws at them.
