Charlotte | 1701 comments Starting the buddy read for The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik!!

This is the third book in The Scholomance series.
1. A Deadly Education
2. The Last Graduate

I JUST bought the book off of Amazon and it'll get here Sat. I own hardcovers of the first two, so this will complete the set. I can 100% see myself reading them again in a few years.

I figure I'll start the conversation off with a none third book related question to get us going.

If you've read of the first two books, which was your favorite?

I like aspects about both of them but I really liked the 2nd. It was so entertaining and I loved how they rallied around El. I really like how strong she is portrayed.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I am still trying to find an available copy-

No hurry! I figured I'd start the thread and we can relive our favorite parts of the first two books :)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Great idea Charlotte-but if you are anxious to start do go ahead, and I will still come back here to post my thoughts. I have spoken to the head of the Adult section and he assures me they have it ordered. Also went into a sad tale about how libraries are waiting forever for new books. Just like every other industry, the printers are all short staffed and and also fell way behind during shut down. The inter-library system has it, but getting a new book through them can take 2-3 months. I check my library's website 2-3 times a day for the books (there are many) that I want, so as soon as it comes in I will get on the list. Buying the book is not in the budget right now-

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments What I remember from book # 2, so I must have liked it. LoL-

Warning: possible spoilers

The Field Day ambush on El-Wow, somehow I missed seeing that coming. It makes sense now, but at the time I did not expect the Shanghai group to turn on New York so violently.

I am trying to "like:" the idea of El's. to create smaller enclaves that can pull some of the power from the large ones. The idea seems so unattainable, and just a teen-age dream to me.

I did love the cliff-hanger at the end and am just as excited as you
to see what happens

Jen K | 3155 comments Yes please!! I just borrowed from the library but haven't managed to get my Kindle online where I'm staying for work but will be reading in the next couple of weeks. I think I devoured each of the last two in one sitting each.

The cliff hangers are killer though!!

Charlotte | 1701 comments Yes! The cliff hangers are crazy! I remember being so mad at the first book and I think I almost threw the 2nd across the room.

I have so many favorite parts but I think my favorite was how El did all the training runs to help so many classmates. Shanghai aside. :)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I'm about to finish my current book and then I think I'll be starting this one. I haven't decided. I will either start this next or I may read another scary book by Simone St. James.

Jen K | 3155 comments Just started, finally! I've already half forgotten the other classmates but good to be back in the world.

Charlotte | 1701 comments I’m on page 333. It took me a minute to remember everyone too. I felt like J should have re-read at least the last one before starting this one.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments My library still has it on order, so it is a waiting game for me

Charlotte | 1701 comments @Joanne I can’t wait until you get it!

I just finished it and I’m going to hold my comments.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Thank you, Charlotte, I will avoid reading anything here this is relevant to the actual story, you are all welcome to comment-Lord knows when I will get it's stuck somewhere out there "in transit"

Jen K | 3155 comments I finished today too. So fun!!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments FINALLY! My wayward book has come in. Of course I am knee deep in other books right now-but what else is new 😂. I will finish 2 of those "other" books today or tomorrow and then dive right in. Knowing how much I loved the first 2 installments, it should not take me long to finish. I like to discuss as I read, so I will include spoiler notations where needed. I cannot remember was it just the 3 of us? Does not matter, I guess. I am of the opinion that spoilers are the best route to go with buddy reads, hope ya'll don't object

Charlotte | 1701 comments I think it is just the three of us and I don’t object. I can’t update the title so all know that there are spoilers for all books.

I’m so glad you got it! I’m really interested to hear what you both think!

Jen K | 3155 comments Also glad that it finally arrived! I had a similar problem of needing to finish a bunch of other books when my copy came through. Excited for you to read it soon!

I am past chapter 8-and I will admit, I have had this site up on my phone the whole time https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...- to jar my memory

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Well, I said it in my reviews of the first 2 books, and I will say it again....the voice of El can be pretty annoying. I realize this is how Y/A's speak, (on and on and on til you want to slap them silly-LoL)-but it still annoys me. That aside, I should finish by the weekend. Hovering between 4-5 stars, all depends on the ending

I went with 4 stars but seriously considered 3. I did not like it near as much as I liked the first two books. I think I would order them:
1. The Last Graduate
2. A Deadly Education
3. The Golden Enclaves

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Finished-liked it enough for 4 stars, the ending satisfied me. I was glad (view spoiler) that would have ruined it for me.

The Last Graduate is the only one that got 5 stars from me, the other two 4 stars. But like you Charlotte I gave serious thought to 3-3 1/2 stars for this one. El's voice drove me mad.

Novik is already working on her new book, no pub. date yet but I am already working up a longing for it. She is one of my favorite writers.

Charlotte | 1701 comments This is the only books of hers that I've read. I have Uprooted sitting on my IRL shelf forever. Maybe I'll give that a try.

I think I had the same issue as you although I didn't call it El's voice. It was just too much detail or build up or something. It was just going on and on, but rethinking it, it really was El's voice and her thinking through and ponder of things that I was like... come on... let's get going!

Jen K | 3155 comments When I started, I was jolted a bit to remember that so much of the story is narrated in El's head. Not my favorite writing style either but I was able to get past it to enjoy the final story. I really liked that the end, the problem and solution were so complex.

I've only read this trilogy and the first in the Temeraire series from her so far. I would like to continue more with Temeraire. I'm slightly more hesitant on the retellings somehow.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments I liked Uprooted-4 stars, Not so much Spinning Silver.

The Temeraire books are one of my very favorite series, I just loved it!
