I don't know what the genre would be and I think it was an archeologist during a dig in an alcove on the beach when they find a fossil.

I read this from my high school library in 2001, 2002, or 2003

After the fossil or artifact, the story goes back in time to tell about the life of the person the object belonged to. The person whose object it was, was part of a tribe of people in prehistoric times. This particular tribal member was very brave, curious, and creative. These characteristics were looked down on by the rest of the tribe and the person felt like an outcast. I think this person invented tools for the tribe to use to survive and helps the tribe make it through some difficult times but I cant really remmber.
