Book: The Haunting of Maddy Clare The Haunting of Maddy Clare by Simone St. James

Review: Even though I have really enjoyed several books by Simone St. James, this one did not appeal to me at all. I see that it was her first book and won several awards. To me, though, the story was blah. Set in 1920's England, the MC is offered an assignment through the temporary agency she works for to go with a ghosthunter to try to remove the ghost of Maddy Clare, a young girl who had killed herself and was haunting the place she died. The plot sounded good but to me, the creepy scenes didn't feel creepy. I didn't like any of the characters and thought the audiobook narrator was awful. So this was a big disappointment.

My Review:

Garrett's Destiny is one installment I've been waiting a long time to read. We met Garrett early on and I've been anxiously awaiting the mate of his dreams, as has he. These dreams have been tormenting him for years.

Over the years, Garrett's allegiances have grown. He's the nephew of the Realm's king, a Grizzly and a member of the Seven. He's there for them all, always doing whatever is necessary to help them all. Now, as he's certain he's found his mate, he needs their help to save her.

Destiny (Dessie) Applegate is just as surprised to see Garrett as he is to see her when their paths cross at a diner. He won't let her go and she's willing to stay to explore her feelings and the wildness of Garrett while she can.

I have to say, I was a little bit thrown by Garrett's reactions and responses to Destiny initially. It all felt a bit aggressive, which I guess was expected from this vamp/demon hybrid. Still, it was a bit off-putting, but probably because of my love of this series and its characters I got sucked into their story and got past it. The two are a good pairing, a great battle match, for sure. And, I was intrigued by Destiny's, well, Destinies.

I'm so very excited for Hope's book next (Warrior's Hope), which has been a loooong time coming! Sucks we've got to wait a year, but what's another year when we've waited this long? Torture! That's what!!

Side note: I loved the interactions with Bear's family! His girls are awesome!

Review: I want to thank Jackie for picking this author, which led me to giving her a try. Oh my god, this book was so intense! I don't usually read horror or ghost stories, or anything like that, but I was quickly hooked and drawn into this one. The story goes back and forth between the past and present, but it was done so smoothly that it didn't pull me out of the book at all. I loved the suspense and mystery aspects as well. It wasn't just about the ghost and her story, there were other stories and mysteries entwined with the ghost's story too. This was probably one of the best books I've read this year so far, it was that good.

Review: For the first half of this book, I really disliked the MC. Phury just seemed to be set on self-destruction. A drug addict and constantly whining about his difficult circumstances and oh yes, the fact that he was in love with his brother's wife. He had committed himself to father children with the Chosen and thereby help to continue the race. Even though he's always been celibate. Yeah, he really has it rough. His behavior toward the Chosen Cornia was abominable. Anyway, he begins to get his act together in the second half and turns things around. A good guy at heart, he had to overcome his addiction which was making him such a jerk. The backstory with the Lessers was really interesting in this book as the war between them and the Brotherhood accelerates. I'll be curious where this goes in the next book.

How it fits: MPG Paranormal Romance
Rating: 5 stars
Review: I'm finally getting pulled into this second half of the psy-changeling series. I was fascinated by the new aspect of the PsyNet and how the anchors play into it. I can't wait to read the next book and see how the Psy use this new knowledge to try and save the Net. As for the romance aspect, I gotta say, I fell a little in love with Canto. I expected this cold, unfeeling, and arrogant Psy, and instead got a warm, loving, and remarkable character who was the definite hero of the story. The way he supported Payal and never ever attempted to take over or act overprotective, but respected her as a person in her own right--it was perfect. I hope we get to see more of these two in the future books, I'd really like to learn more about Payal's sister and also more about Arwen and his love affair with his bear. This was another 5 star read- I'm on a roll! 😄

Devouring Darkness by Chloe Neill
Series: Heirs of Chicagoland #4

Rating: ✮✮✮½

My Review:
Roger, Chicago’s supernatural Ombudsman and Elisa's boss, has tasked her and her partner with rescuing one of his informants. During their rescue, they battle some powerful ghosts and lose track of the woman they went to help.

This is where I sort of lost interest in things for a bit. The post-battle glop mystery was a kinda interesting, but then we move into a bit of the same/same. As with the previous installments, things really pick up about 3/4 of the way through the book and I'm once again eager to know what happens next. The endings always leave you wanting more and that epilogue, dang.

It could've been my mood or the book, who knows. Either way, I always enjoy returning back to Chicago for the Chicagoland clan's (past and present) adventures and will continue to follow the series.

Review: I enjoyed this book much more than the last one I read by this author. This one had characters that I liked and had some really creepy scenes. Both storylines were interesting and well-done. I loved the way the present-day MC was able to piece together the story of the girls from the past and connect the past to the present. All in all, a very satisfying story!

Resting Witch Face by Juliette Cross
Series: Stay a Spell #5
Shelf #6: UF (shelved by 9 people)
Read: 14 Nov
Rating: ✮✮✮✮✮

My Review:
Resting Witch Face was one of my most anticipated books of the year. In July, I stumbled across book 1 (Wolf Gone Wild) of Juliette Cross' Stay a Spell series and I didn't stop until I'd read all available books. The book I wanted to read next was absolutely Jules and Ruben's story and happy surprise it was the next scheduled release. Fans of the series from the start, those who had to wait years for this book ... I can't even imagine! Thankfully, the author did not disappoint. In fact, she exceeded my expectations.

The tension between these two has been intense. We knew something had happened to separate the two, we heard mom's warning and concerns, we've seen Jules grow into her position as New Orleans' "renown ice-queen and serious-as-fuck Enforcer" and Ruben cherish any moment in her presence. With Resting Witch Face we - and they - get everything else. Everything we'd wanted to know, the re/union we'd all wanted to happen and a black magic battle.

Over the last twelve years, the two have grown into their individual positions while keeping a respectable distance, no matter how difficult the latter proved to be. They're now working together to promote changes to the High Witch Guild, seeking to finally include the werewolves, whose curse is now tamed with the help of Violet and her magical tattoos. Locally, they have much success. It's not until they reach the UK that issues arise. As their mission continues, they open up about their past, share their feelings and discuss their future.
I never knew how lovely it could feel to set all my worries aside and let someone else carry the weight for a little while.
Jules has always taken care of everyone else. She's been the mother-like sister to all of her sisters. She's always keeping herself in check. These two are a great pair and she's finally able to allow someone to care for her.

I highly recommend this series to UF and PNR fans alike. There's a nice mix of supernaturals with a loving family of witches at its center. I just can't get enough! I'm anxious for sweet Clara's story next year: Grim and Bear It (May 2023)

Review: It's been a long time since I read a book in this series, but I was able to get back into it easily. Harper Blaine is a Greywalker, someone who can move between this world and the world of the dead. In this book, someone is trying to manipulate Harper and her powers. With her investigation into what this entity wants, we begin to get some answers to questions from the previous books, especially about her father and his suicide when she was 12. I really like her partner and love interest, Quinton. This guy will do anything in his power to help Harper and keep her alive. All without trying to stop her from doing what she feels is right. I really enjoy the characters and the storyline and look forward to the next book. Hopefully I won't wait so long to read it.

Review: It’s been ages since I’ve picked up a book set in the Nightside, but it was like coming back to an old friend. I love the craziness as well as the mystery, which made this book just about perfect. When John teams up with the Madman, The Sinnerman, and a succubus named PrettyPoison, things just got even crazier. His quest to find out the origins of Nightside and to learn who his mother really is takes them all into strange and scary places to talk with some very scary people. And of course, they are being hunted by other various factions trying to stop him from finding out things best left alone. It was a fantastic ride and the perfect book to reignite my love for this series.
