To keep factory workers engaged in their repetitive task each day; lectors were hired (or volunteered) to read books/newspapers to factory workers. "What to read" was based on a consensus of the employees. 1910s

Tobacco factory lector, 1910

Reading can reduce stress and anxiety at work by helping you stay calm. A study at the University of Sussex found that reading reduces stress by up to 68%. It works better than other relaxation methods, such as listening to music or drinking a hot cup of coffee.

I'm welcoming suggestions, but I prefer to pick unread books from my own shelves so I might need a more than a few suggestions. Thank you 💜🙂
Would "Nana" by Emile Zola do? I believe it's about a courtisan/prostitute, does that counts as a profession?

I think I 'll read "Mademoiselle Scudéri" one of the first private detectives in the literature and the very first female private detective, by E T A Hoffmann.
Hmm, I'll see what happens. As of now the only classic I have lined up is by Marcus Aurelius. No, not true. Barchester Towers--does anyone know if that will fit? The Warden would have, but this is a different story.

I just want to do one this month."
Great just put in your template and i'll link you from the above post!
The copy I want of Barchester Towers is in mending, so it's not likely I'll finish it this month. I really like the Oxford one that has the list of characters at the back so am holding out for that one (and there is only one of that edition in the system.)However, if I end up reading any other classics that will count, I'll add them here.
Okay, I can now play since I'm reading a biography of Mary Wollstonecraft and her work is a significant part of it (as in work for money, and not just her writing, but of course how she started getting paid to write, etc)1/1

I am on a phone app at the moment so I cannot link or edit, but I did read a book on the topic, MASH by Richard Hooker published in 1968. It is the story of three Army Surgeons that inspired the movie and television series by the same name. It was entertaining. The writing was not fine literature but it was still enjoyable.

I loved The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. What an excellent choice!
I read all the MASH books, loved them! also The Spy Who Came In from the Coldokay, all updated. I had forgotten to add my book,
so have done it now!
I'm also late. I read one of the two books I was planning to read: Mademoiselle de Scudéry by E.T.A. Hoffmann. She is considered the first modern private detective 1819. I like the fact that E T A Hoffmann chose a woman to solve the case and also that she is an elderly woman of 73.

I decided to start reading this one too.
Ah, nice! In one way it feels refreshingly modern and in on another absolutely not, there is a lot of crying and fainting but I do like the dark and sinister parts.
