Morgan | 18 comments I read this back around 2010(?) and I had borrowed it from my dad, who no longer even remembers it. It was a normal sized paperback with non-specific art, like the generic sci-fi/fantasy books you see in the store. It might have been part of a series, but I can't remember.

It was definitely a far-future setting, where humans had expanded to multiple star systems.

A small, early story bit I remember was that, while still on their ship, the protagonists saw another character (staff sergeant?) scrubbing himself with a metal bristle brush in the showers.

The planet is mainly colonized by 2 human groups: the 'normal' citizenry (which I think arrived last), and a religious sub-group that are treated like a different class of citizen. The sub-group also harbors a military terrorist/guerilla fighter group.
The military is struggling to keep the humans in check, while also defending against/ keeping the peace with a more advanced alien species.
I remember the aliens as being tall, with long necks, and cat-like faces(?)
The aliens didn't care for the humans, and threatened that any attack, from any group of humans, would trigger reprisals against aal the humans equally.

Morgan, can you tell us more about the religious group of humans? What do they believe, and how are the treated by others?

A long shot - Babylon's Ashes by James S.A. Corey?

Morgan | 18 comments I don't remember much their religion specifically.
I think they were, as a people, shorter and physically distinct enough from "standard" citizens to be identifiable.
They were the original colonists of the planet, which was meant to either be their promised land or a place free of persecution.

Morgan | 18 comments Humans have some kind of gravity technology, which was used by a character as a high-tech version of an ejection parachute from an aircraft.
The aliens are more advanced, dismissive of humans, and clan based.
In one instance of diplomacy, the 'local' aliens were hosting members of the planetary government and military. An officer character was taking spy pictures, activated by adjusting his shirt/jacket.

Morgan | 18 comments Bump. I've been trying to remember other things about the book:
It had at least 1 sequel.
Either a group or a single one of the aliens starts working with some of the humans, providing them with a spaceship. At one point they have to secretly buy a data drive of maps from another group of aliens.
I doubt the cover imagery is very helpful, but I remember it being mainly blue with a dark colored ship flying towards the reader.

I've been trying to use chatgpt to help, but I'm wondering if I somehow merged 2 stories together in memory. Been finding lots of other interesting books though

Angela Johnson | 96 comments Probably a long shot, but some elements sound similar...could it be Freedom's Landing by Anne McCaffery?
Freedom's Landing (Catteni, #1) by Anne McCaffrey

Morgan | 18 comments I don't know how to tag users, so I'm not sure if you'll see.
Sorry for not responding to the suggestion, but that's not it.

I don't remember the book itself being the highest quality, so it might be something lost to the bottom shelf of time. I'll keep looking for it though
