20 Point Tasks

20.1 - Most Improved– Lisa MD’s Task: No Tricks, All Treats
Help Thread
This Fall when you come trick-or-treating at my door you will find a selection of some of the most popular Halloween chocolate candies in the United States. Go ahead and reach into my cauldron and grab a full-sized chocolate treat of your choice. Don’t be greedy! You can only pick one. Read a book that meets the requirements for the chocolate you chose.
Required: State the option.

Option A: Snickers
Read a book whose title or subtitle contains a word that begins and ends with the same letter.

Option B: M&M’s
Read a book whose title or subtitle contains either an ampersand (&) or an apostrophe (') symbol.

Option C: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
Read a book by an author whose first or last name starts with a letter in RPBC.

Option D: Kit Kat
Read a book with a two-word title where both words begin with the same letter.

20.2 - Rookie at the Top - Keli's Task: For Jules
Help Thread
I was very excited to be offered this chance to make a challenge and I knew exactly what, or in my case who, I'd base it on. My best friend of 36 years, Julie aka Jules, passed away this January from breast cancer. She was one of the most awesome, giving and hardworking people in the world. She had the biggest heart. Bold claims, I know, but I can so back them up. This challenge is for her, wherever her spirit may be.

Please choose from one of the three options below.
Required: State the option.

Option 1. Jules had two email addresses. The first was Crabbyhorse because she was a Cancer in the Western zodiac and a horse in the Chinese. Read a book with either a horse or a crab on the cover. The animal doesn't have to be in it's entirety but it must clearly be a crab or horse. Equally, if you manage to find a book with a freakish amalgamation of the two, I'd not only be impressed, but I'd accept that too.
Required: Post the cover.

Option 2. Her other email was ladilatte. Read a book with a word of four letters or more in the title or subtitle that can be made from LADILATTE using the letters as many times as they appear.
Required: State the word.

Option 3. She is survived by five beautiful children. Read a book from a series with a minimum of five whole-numbered books in the series. The series name and number must be indicated in the GR title listing in grayscale parentheses following the title or grayscale italics above the title.

PS - Please get checked regularly. If you have any concerns DO NOT hesitate to see a doctor. Nothing is trivial or silly. Early detection saves lives

20.3 - Best Review - Trishhartuk’s Task: Forever Autumn
Help Thread
One of my favourite songs of all time is Forever Autumn. It was first released in 1972 by Paul Vigrass and Gary Osborne, who co-wrote it with Jeff Wayne, but the version I heard first is the Justin Hayward one. This was released in 1978 as a single from the War of the Worlds album, where Wayne reused it with permission from Vigrass and Osborne. Obviously I’m not the only fan of it, as a new arrangement, sung by Hayward, has been reissued this year (although I prefer the 1978 version!).

Choose one option.
Required: State the option

Option 1. Read a book first published in or after 1972, AND where the single author’s first and last initials can be found in the phrase “FOREVER AUTUMN”.

Option 2: Read a book from this list: Best Books to Read in Autumn, which meets all the usual SRC requirements (e.g. page length, children’s book rules, etc):
Required. State what page the book is on.

Option 3: The lyrics include references to birds flying south, the sun through the trees, fallen leaves, autumn’s golden gown, and gentle rain. (The full lyrics can be found at: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/moody...) Read a book with a word of four or more letters found in the lyrics in the title. The word must match exactly. Subtitles are excluded.
Required: State the word.

20 Point Tasks

20.4 - Golden Oldies - Margo's Task: Homage to Catalonia
Help Thread
My favourite book of the Summer challenge was Golden Earrings. It’s a very powerful historical fiction about the Spanish Civil War. The setting switches between Barcelona in the lead-up to, and during, the War (1930s) and Paris in the 1970s, just after the death of Spain’s leader Francisco Franco. The story is told from the perspectives of 3 women as buried family secrets and tensions are uncovered. The book really impacted me as I live in Barcelona region (although I'm from Scotland), and I’ve been doing a lot of reading about the War and the impact on Catalonia and its people. During the Fall challenge, I will be reading Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell, the pen-name of Eric Arthur Blair, who volunteered, fought and was wounded during the Spanish Civil War.

Choose ONE of the following options. The book must be new-to-you.
Required: State that the book is new-to-you.

Option 1 - Read a book by George Orwell.

Option 2 - Read a book with an MPG Spain or MPG Spanish Civil War.

Option 3 - Read a book from this list of Best Books of the Decade: 1930s.
Required: State the page.

20.5 - Bigger Is Better - Insiyah's Task: In Awe of Space
Help Thread
Photos of space have always been ethereal, and the world is enchanted with the photos that the James Webb telescope takes; most recently astronauts used the telescope to take a direct image of a planet outside our solar system. You can see all the photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasaweb...

In honour of the beauty that the James Webb telescope gives us, and the hope of exploring strange new worlds (get it?), read a book with a main page genre that contains "space", such as Space, Space Travel, or Space Opera that is set at least 50% in space on a space station (an orbiting artificial structure) or spaceship.

20.6 It's A Fact- Jen K's Task: National Book Festival
Help Thread
The US Library of Congress sponsors so many great events throughout the year but my favorite is the National Book Festival held in Washington, DC. I was so excited that it was back in person this year. I spent most of yesterday at the National Book Festival. It was so inspiring and hopeful as the authors shared how they are struggling with current events, intentionally including different voices in their stories and the overall positive interactions between authors and between authors and readers. This task is dedicated to the National Book Festival and Library of Congress.

Choose one option.
Required: State the option.

Option 1: I want to celebrate the authors who attended, shared their work and signed books for massive queues of fans. Read a book by an author attending the 2022 National Book Festival. All authors are listed at this site:
https://www.loc.gov/events/2022-natio...

Option 2: Read a book set at least 50% in Washington, DC.
Required: If the setting is not clear from the GR description or the metadata, provide a reference.

Option 3: There was a lot of love for the Library of Congress and librarians in general. Read a book with the letters LOC found in the title. All three letters must be found in the title. Subtitles are excluded.

20.7 - Shorter Is Sweeter - XBM's Task: All Who Wander Are Not Lost…Some Are Geocachers!
Help Thread
Like Dorothy and her friends, geocachers travel to new lands in search of adventure and treasure. Geocaching first began in May 2000, when President Clinton allowed civilians to use the GPS, or Global Positioning System. The first geocache was a Look for a black plastic bucket buried most of the way in the ground with a log book and stash such as: Delorme Topo USA software, videos, books, food, money, and a slingshot! You rarely find these things anymore. Today there are many different varieties of caches, including Events, Challenge caches (my personal favorite), Traditional, and Mystery caches, to name a few. This task celebrates Geocaching on its 20th anniversary year.

Select one option.
Required: State the option.

Option 1. Read a book first published in the year 2000.

Option 2. Read a book by a single author whose initials are found in GEOCACHING. (This must include all initials, and only as often as they appear in the word).

Option 3. Read a book whose title contains a word of 4 or more letters that can be made from the letters in Global Positioning System. For this task, punctuation, such as an apostrophe or hyphen, may be added to create a word. Subtitles are excluded.
Required: State the word.

Poor sentimental Tin Man spent the entire movie lamenting his lack of a heart, so let’s help him find one.

This is a two-book task. Read one book for two different options. The two books combined must be at least 500 pages.

I couldn’t write this task without mentioning Louis’ big sister 16 year old Avelyn, who stayed calm and made sure her mum got the help she needed and also looked after her younger siblings protecting them from what was going on. I am so proud of her. In honour of Avelyn:

Read a book which contains the word “TEEN” intact in its title or subtitle
e.g. Ghost in the Canteen I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death, The Velveteen Daughter

25 Point Tasks

25.7 - Delicious Dee's Task: It's Duolingo Time
Help Thread
In keeping with the theme of self-improvement that my previous tasks this year have been, its time for some Duolingo love. If you aren’t familiar with Duolingo its an app based language learning program that you can use on your phone. It walks you through a series of lessons and levels that get more complicated as you go. The goal is that with 15 minutes of practice a day, you can rapidly acquire language skills.

For this task, you will pick ONE option and read Book A and Book B for that option.

My current Duolingo learning streak is 237 days (as of September 1). So each of your books must exceed 237 pgs.

Option 1:
Book A. Duolingo was launched as a private Beta service on November 27, 2011 and went public June 19, 2012. Read a book that was FIRST published between November 27, 2011 and June 19, 2012.
Book B. Throughout your lessons on Duolingo, Duo (an Owl) helps you through. Read a book where the letters DUO or OWL can be found in the title (not subtitle).

Since I’ve been using Duolingo, I’ve experimented with a few different languages before defaulting back to French which has been my primary language. These languages have included Japanese, Ukrainian and Greek.
Book A. Choose one of those three languages: Japanese, Ukrainian and Greek, and read a book where the author's initials (all) appear in that single language word.
Book B. Using the two remaining language words, read a book where a word of at least 4 letters in the title can be made with the letters of those languages. Letters may be used as often as they appear.
For example, if you pick Greek for book A; then you can use the letters of JapaneseUkrainian for Book B.
A: Kendra Elliot
B: SUNKEN- Sunken Shadows

Option 3.
The vast majority of my time using Duolingo has been focused on refreshing and then extending my French language skills. I’m currently on Unit 14 of over 100.

30 Point Tasks

30.1 - Ava Catherine’s Task: America’s National Parks
Help Thread
America’s national parks are places of pilgrimage, places where we return over and over again with family, building memories. With each trip into the parklands, our spirits are nurtured, and nature sparks something in us that is uniquely and divinely human. I believe they are the closest thing we have in this country to sacred lands.

Not only do we save these lands, they save us. There’s something about this wild continuity that gives us courage, allowing us to be the best of who we are as human beings. I think our national parks remind us that beauty is not optional, but is at the very core of our being.

This is a two book task. Read one book from two different options or two books from one option.
The combined total of the two books must be at least 500 pages.
No books with the genre Childrens or Kids may be used.

REQUIRED: Identify which option or options you select when you post.

Option 1: The Wolves of Yellowstone National Park
In January 1995, fourteen gray wolves captured in western Canada were released into Yellowstone National Park. This was part of a long-range plan to reestablish the predators in their former habitat and make the world’s first national park more representative of what it had been. Within a few years the wolves were, once again, a thriving part of the Yellowstone ecosystem.

-Read a book with the word WOLF or WOLVES intact in title/subtile/series title or author’s name. Wolf Hall, Naomi Wolf, History of Wolves

Option 2: Yosemite National Park
On the second morning of what was probably the most significant camping trip in American history, the naturalist John Muir and President Theodore Roosevelt awoke under a blanket of snow on Glacier Point and spent the day descending to Yosemite Valley. As they bedded down for another night under the open sky with El Capitan looming silently on one side and the cacophony of Bridalveil Falls on the other, Roosevelt exclaimed,” This has been the grandest day of my life.”

Those few nights under the magical sequoias and mystical stars of Yosemite affected Roosevelt as the enchanting wilderness bestowed its sacred gift. As president, he did his utmost to save our opportunity to experience the majesty and continuity of the wilderness for successive generations. And by providing federal protection to Yosemite Valley, Roosevelt was gifting his “grandest day” available to all of us, forever.

-Read a book by a single author whose first and last name initials can be found in YOSEMITE PARK. The letters may be used only as often as they appear in the target phrase. Middle names/initials may be ignored.

Option 3: Horseback Riding
Horseback riding the trails of Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah is an exhilarating adventure. Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, was instrumental in opening the parks to automobiles; however, he always preferred experiencing the beauty and history of Zion and Bryce Park on horseback.

A: Read a book with the word HORSE intact in the title/subtitle or series title;
or
B: Read a book with at least one horse on the cover. The image must be of a real and identifiable horse (i.e., no silhouettes, horses in the distance or background, obscured heads, mythological, fictional, artist's rendering, or stylized horses). Identifying characteristics must be visible, so silhouettes will not work.
Required: Include the cover when you post.
ex. Leaving Cheyenne by Larry McMurtry In a Narrow Grave Essays on Texas by Larry McMurtry Seabiscuit An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand The Wake of Forgiveness by Bruce Machart

Option 4: Grand Canyon National Park
Although Native Americans lived in the area as early as the 13th century, the first European sighting of the canyon was around 1540 by members an expedition led by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Three hundred years later, in 1857, Joseph Christmas Ives, an American explorer, wrecked his boat trying to ascend the Colorado River but brought back the first sketches of what he called the “Big Canyon of the Colorado,” as well as a dire prediction of its future. “The region is, of course, altogether valueless,” Ives wrote. But in 1869 a one-armed Civil War veteran and college geology professor named John Wesley Powell led a group of ten men down the rapids of the Colorado River and along the length of the 277 mile gorge in four rowboats, making the first detailed study of the massive architecture of stone that encloses the river.

By the end of the 19th century, the Grand Canyon was attracting thousands of tourists each year. In January 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt, who embraced environmental conservation as a major part of his presidency, made more than 800,000 acres of the Grand Canyon area into a national monument.

Today more than 5 million people visit the canyon each year. Accessible by foot, mule, or boat, the canyon floor is also a popular site for whitewater rafting, hiking and running.

-Read a book with a main page genre of History or Historical Fiction.

Option 5: Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve
Glacier Bay in Alaska, a 3.3 million acre park of mountain peaks, ice-sculpted fjords, tidewater glaciers, and abundant wildlife, is one of my favorite parks. There are no roads into the park, and about ninety percent of the visitors arrive on cruise ships. Marine waters make up nearly one-fifth of the park, so Glacier Bay is rich with marine life, including humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, seals, sea otters, and porpoises. Bears, wolves, deer, mountain goats, and bald eagles thrive in the park.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve was named a national monument in 1925. In 1980, the area became a national park and preserve, and 2.7 million acres received wilderness designation. In 1986, the park became a biosphere reserve and the area was named a world heritage site in 1992.

-Read a book first published in 1925, or read a book first published in 1992.

Help Thread
This is a 2 book task. Choose 2 of the 3 available options. The page total must be at least 600 pages.
A MPG of Childrens or Kids may NOT be used.

The first of the month is usually quite a busy time. Payments enter our bank accounts and then leave as soon as they arrive, and we take care of necessary repairs while we can, There are also a lot of commemorative days that fall on the first of the month. My challenge will look at three commemorative days, one each for each month.

Option 1 - September 1: Emma M Nutt Day
On September 1, 1878, Emma became the first female telephone operator. She did such a good job that the company began hiring female operators only. Emma worked there for over 33 years, and though she is long gone, she has not been forgotten: a synthesized speech system is named EMMA in her honor.

I even quit tobacco, athlugh it took several tries before I quit for good. But quit coffee? Not a chance. I know I'm addicted but that's OK because I also know that before I've had my first coffee of the day, Wayne no function goodly!

Read a book with a cup or mug that would typically hold a cup of coffee on the cover.

Option 3 - November 1: Family Literacy Day
I grew up in a family of teachers, so learning played a very important role in my upbringing. I never had a shortage of books, and sometimes, my dad would put me on his knee and hold the newspaper in front of me, and I would read it. When we came to a word I didn't know, he would pronounce the word and deline it, I would repeat what he said, and then we would nove on.

Read a book with an MPG of Books About Books

30.6 - Katrisa's Task: Empty Nest (NOT!)
Help Thread
I am in my mid-40s and the hubs and I were looking forward to exploring life on our own. But circumstances this year ended up with both my mother and my adult daughter moving in with us so no more empty nest. So this task is dedicated to my mom and daughter.

This is a two book task. Choose two different options and state which options you choose.

1.Read a book that includes three generations of ONE family as characters or subjects.
Circle of Three the interconnected lives of three generations of women
The House of the Spirits three generations of the Trueba family
Required: Include a reference if the three generations are not identifiable on the GR main page

2. Cassidy - My daughter was named after a Grateful Dead Song. Read a book with a word of at least 4 letters from one of the tracks on the album Reckoning in the TITLE (subtitles excluded). Word must match exactly. For this task hyphenated words can be separated.

3. Jennifer - My mom is a traveler - and she moves A LOT. I don’t even write down her address anymore because it is bound to change soon. She even has dual citizenship because one country just isn’t enough!
Read a book where a main character moves (not visits) to a new state, province, country, or planet during the course of the book. The starting location and the resulting location must both be a setting in the book.
Ex. The Four Winds Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains....Elsa Martinelli—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California"
Required: If the move is not evident on the GR main page, include a reference.

4. Jennifer and Cassidy both have double letters in their names. Read a book with an author who has a double letter (must be next to each other) in their FIRST name. So Ann would work (double Ns next to each other) but not Adele (has two Es but not next to each other. Initials do not count (so no e.e. cummings).

30.7 - Schatzie's Task: Chicken Love
Help Thread
I am new to having chickens this year. In April, I brought home 8 cute little chicks. My husband was NOT happy. Then I mentioned we had to build a coop…again he was NOT happy. It’s now the end of summer and I cannot keep my husband away from the chickens. He holds them. Feeds them. Watches them when they free-range. He tucks them in at night. He LOVES the chickens.

Pick 2 options and read a book from each.

Option A: Building the coop with my husband was stressful. I recently read Boundaries in Marriage: Understanding the Choices That Make or Break Loving Relationships and it really did help.So for this option, read a nonfiction book with a MPG of SELF HELP.

Option B: Read a book that has all the letters CHICKEN PAPA in the title and/or subtitle.
ex.
Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It,
Shark's Fin and Sichuan Pepper: A Sweet-Sour Memoir of Eating in China,
Don't Look Behind You! A Safari Guide's Encounters with Ravenous Lions, Stampeding Elephants, and Lovesick Rhinos

Option C: Lavender is his favorite chicken. She’s beautifiul. Looks like a little princess. Read a book with all the letters LAVENDER in the author’s name. Single authors only.
ex.Victoria Alexander, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, Karen Cleveland

Option D: I named most of them with herb, food or flower names. Poppy, Rosie, Lavendar, Nutmeg, Goose formerly known as Peaches, Mohawk Molly formerly known as Juniper, Sunny formerly known as Julep, and we have one with no name. So for this option, read a book that has a word in the title that is food or flower related that would make a great name for a chicken . I’ll let you know if we use it. If it helps, this chicken is black and white.
Required: State the word.

50.1 - Jen B's Task: Monopoly!
Help Thread
Monopoly is a classic board game in which players try to collect and build as many properties as they can so they can charge their fellow players "rent." The goal is to collect 2-3 of the same color properties to create a "monopoly."

Let's bend the rules and play with books!

Roll one six-sided die to determine your reading category. Roll only ONCE.
https://virtualdiceroll.com/1/en/one-die
Then, create your monopoly by reading three different books that share this connection.
The three books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with children, kids or related genres on the main book page may be used.
Books in the same series MAY be used for a roll of 2-6.
Required: State the number rolled.

Roll a 1: Author Name (first or last)
Read three books by three different authors who share the same first or last name. Spelling must match exactly. The name of all 3 authors must be in the same position for each author.
Required: State the name.

Roll a 2: Word in the title
Read three books whose titles share a common word of 4 or more letters. Words must match exactly. If plurals or possessives are used, the word must appear that way in all three titles. Subtitles are excluded.
Required: State the word.

Roll a 3: Token
Read three books that all have the same popular Monopoly token object on the cover from this list: Scottie dog/dog, top hat/hat, battleship/boat, racecar/car, horse & rider, train, thimble, shoe/shoes
Required: Include the cover and state the token.

Roll a 4: MPG
Read three books that share the same main page genre. The genres should appear the same way for all three books, such as standalone genre "Mystery" or embedded genre "Mystery > Cozy Mystery" on each of the traditional GR book pages,
or genres "Mystery" or "Cozy Mystery" on the beta GR book pages.
Required: State the MPG.

Roll a 5: Setting
Read three books that all have the same setting. For books set in the U.S., the books should be in the same U.S. state. If set in a country other than the U.S., the books should be set in the same country. If set in a place outside the world map, such as the Moon, Outer Space, or a fictional/fantasy setting, the three settings must match.
Required: State the setting. If setting is not obvious according to GR description or metadata, provide a reference.

Roll a 6: Year of publication
Read three books that were all FIRST published in the same year..
Required: State the year.
