Out of Context Quotes
I almost started an "Out of Context Dedications" thread, but I'm putting this here instead :)For the craziness of courtship.
For the heart of a house of horrors aflame.
For Allison.
- A House at the Bottom of a Lake
(I haven't read this book myself, nor do I plan to, but I heard this dedication on Booktube, and it made me laugh.)
and finally a non-euclidean gargoyle that had a troubling habit of not quite staying in the viewer’s spatial perception.
There comes a time in every necromancer’s life when they begin to seriously consider a career change. The fact is that necromancers are not the most popular people. In fact, the average necromancer is forced to run from angry villagers at least seven times over the course of their life, which may explain why so few necromancers are overweight. Magic is all well and good, but there are times when a high level of cardiovascular fitness is better.

That was the opening paragraph and it didn't stop. I may not be sure exactly what kind of book I was expecting from the title, but all up hilarious to start wasn't it.

That may or may not be my final answer. LOL
I like the idea of NOT giving the context (i.e. the book) initially. It would make the quotes funnier. Maybe put them in spoiler text in the same post?
Beth wrote: "I like the idea of NOT giving the context (i.e. the book) initially. It would make the quotes funnier. Maybe put them in spoiler text in the same post?"This was my original plan when starting the thread, but then I was worried I'd forget what books mine were from. Spoiler-tagging is a good option!

Great guess DJ but I’m not a cozy mystery gal.

Ah well, I have been wrong before and most likely will again, but as long as I live through it is all good. LOL
The only reason we don't have sayings about Marine's in China Shops is because the Bull's got there first.
Don’t mention it, he said, and I’m really sorry about what happened to your girl. He meant it, too. He’s a decent enough man, apart from the duplicity and that vicious streak.
Of the people, by the people, for the people. I can’t remember offhand where that quote comes from; it was something to do with some bunch of wild-eyed idealists overthrowing the tyrant so they could become tyrants themselves. No good will have come of it, you can be sure. The people; God help us.

I am not sure that is a fix, but we can live with that. I found this quote out of context because of the source. It was in a book, that generally wouldn't be considered as knowing the modern context of the Of the people,... portion.
these two struck me as odd:Esther would have felt all at sea if she hadn’t been surrounded on all sides by desert.

and the double reference to infants children really took me out of the book not to mention that the image was gruesome
The morgue bakery ran out of ways to make ash cake, and so the mothers couldn’t burn and eat their infants children properly, which left the city swarming with wailing sobbing child-souls.

Wow, now there are some grim quotes

Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City.
So with the grim quotes above, I just listened to a song that is from a comedy movie, but the line sends cills down my spine ever time I hear it. 'Look out Europe, we're going on tour.'
Dj wrote: "Wow, now there are some grim quotes."well, I really, really didn't like the book the second quote was from. The first book was pretty good, but still had a lot of violence in it

Well the quote I put up for the movie, has no real violence in it. It is from Mel Brooks's The Producers. I prefer the original version, but others may have other views I was really surprised to find a version of 'Spring Time for Hitler and Germany' on Spotify. A song that I find absolutely hilarious. Again some people might not agree with that thought process.
“Self-ambulation detected,” says the computer.“What’s your name?” “I am Emperor Comatose. Kneel before me.” “Incorrect.”

The Dark Forest, Liu Cixin

Darn so close. It is a good quote.
Interesting Question, which is why I got the book in the first place. I want to find out. I can say that it opens with them in a barn. Of course, I am not sure about traveling in the open with an elephant you had liberated, or stolen from a circus, and hiding the tracks would be...difficult to say the least. Of course, since I am unsure of the time frame the book is sent in I can't even say if there is an internet. Although if there is I am sure that would be high on the list of things to avoid.

There's a book called The Great Elephant Chase which is pretty much this exact problem.
