Fantasy. Wizard fights evil, he's constantly on the run from a stronger, evil force. Read around 2002. Spoiler ahead.

Hi all,
20 years ago I read a book and it keeps nagging me lately. I don't know ANYTHING about at title, author or release date. here is was I do know:
the story evolves around a wizard fighting evil, and he is constantly on the run for this stronger, evil force. He thinks he is helping the good side, but in the end of the story/book he realizes he is actually this evil force, but didn't notice it. It was like he had 2 personalities.
I know this isnt much and it is hugely vague, but who knows. I can't find a lot on the web with vague sentences, so I'm betting on you to recognize something. Thanks in advance.

I'll try that one, but I read the description and it didn't feel like a fit, but who knows.

HI! Ehm, my memory is pretty vague. I believe that there were a boy and a girl running away from something, and there was this older man helping them. They are fleeing for this evil force. In the end of the book, the old man realises that he is the evil, because he had gaps in his memory that now makes sense (thats when he is his evil self). Its not much to go on, I know, I read in 18 years ago or something. I would see its young adult.
