I always love books that reference the music of the time. I cannot resist taking the time to listen to each song as I go. I have found some amazing folk music that way while reading with the Southern Trail group. I already knew 90% of the music referenced here. I'm terrible with anything past 1999, but to that point I can mostly sing along. Raised in the church, so all the old hymns are mother's milk.

Definitely fits for the category, Lori.

Sam, it appears you really got around the bay area. Sadly I haven't been to any of those venues, but I did see a number of bands in the 70's at the Fillmore in SF and the Berkeley Greek. Our thing in the 70's was Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum. And I did see Peter Paul and Mary in the early 80's at the Concord Pavilion (everyone laying back on the grass, singing along--it was so lovely).

And I have more books to get to now! I've only read Cowgirls, and that was such a long time ago.

I think I dropped off with newer music by 1989, so I admire you sticking out the decade, Sara!

And I'll third your idea to use this book in the music category, Lori. Definitely.

Cynda | 5196 comments I listened to Goodnight Irene. What quiet disquietude--if there can be such a thing.

Cynda | 5196 comments Terry, thank you. Like many others, I am moving more and more into focus on personal reading challenges. . . .I made general note in my 3023 reading planner that we would like to read Jesey's Garage. Maybe others will join us too as time gets closer.

And I thought I was bad! Cynda...have you got plans through 3023? LOL. (I know it was meant to be 2023, I'm just teasing you.)

Cynda | 5196 comments Sara, I have plans into 2024. And beyond 😅 I will have multi-year civil rights study at my nonfiction group. For literature, in 2023, I have a 21st century madhouse run and in 2024 a Borges study. Yep. Sweating it & Loving it.

Terry | 2379 comments Lori, I may fill my Bingo square for music with this too and put off reading The Song of the Lark one more time! Thanks for the inspiration!

My Spotify Likes have songs from the 1930s through almost the present day, but I definitely have more entries from 1965 to about 1995, and so many genres! Right now I am listening to Sting sing Fields of Gold and I couldn’t tell you what year that was recorded. The segues drive my husband nuts. His taste runs to Chet Baker and Jerry Mulligan, which I also like.

This has been a great reading and discussing experience!
