message 602: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I loved "The Last Starfighter" when I saw it in the movies, a looong time ago. (Harold Hill as an alien!) I'm returning Armada to the library today unread, because I read a lot, but I can't read everything. I'll borrow it another time.

Pixelina | 64 comments Hodor!
I am reading Rise of the Horde, my first WoW book after playing the game for close to 10 years.

message 604: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I just picked up The Great Gatsby at the library, because I haven't read it since high school.

My brain processed that book as "Rise of the Hodor" until I read it three times.

message 606: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly I am now reading Ship of the Dead. It is a great beach read. Fun and light.

message 607: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 555 comments I nearly finised with Cloud Atlas - still not sure how I feel about it.
Next up is Skinny Dip - hopefully some light relief.

message 608: by Scott (new)

Scott | 152 comments I've recently finished The Girl on the Train and Every Fifteen Minutes. Both were good suspense books.

Now I'm reading Dark Star: An Oral Biography of Jerry Garcia.

message 609: by Kateb (new)

Kateb | 959 comments after seeing an old movie of Dune I just had to read the book again, so good. Just finished the secret of the seventh son. very good.

Phrynne Kateb wrote: "after seeing an old movie of Dune I just had to read the book again, so good. Just finished the secret of the seventh son. very good."

I got so excited for a moment when I looked up Secret of the Seventh Son and saw it was by Glenn Cooper. I love his books and thought it must be a new one. But it is just a new title for an old book Library of the Dead. Why do they do that?

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Just finished Ancillary Sword which I love love loooooved. The Causal Angel is next, before I forget everything that happened in The Fractal Prince.

exactly I wanted to read the next book and spent ages trying to find library of the dead before I read the rest of the series. Finally twigged.

Justice (HavenTierra) LOL @ "Rise of the Hodor". Hahaha!

Matt | 10 comments Tad wrote: "Finished Armada by Ernest Cline. I can understand the criticism it's received, but I enjoyed it. A nice fun little read. Not too deep and some parts don't bear close ..."

I have to say Armada was a HUGE let down. I loved Ready Player One and this book was hard to even finish. Just nothing original about it. I like the 80s nostalgia but he already did that.

message 615: by M.L. (new)

M.L. | 947 comments I'm reading Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor and totally enjoying it.:)

message 616: by JaneymacD (new)

JaneymacD I'm currently reading The Martian by Andy Weir. I'm really enjoying it and am recommending it to pretty much everyone I know! I'm also working my way through The Complete Sherlock Holmes: The Heirloom Collection. This is a lot of Holmes to get through so I'm dipping in and out of it every couple of weeks. I expect this to be on my "To Read" list for a loooong time!

message 617: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I was very happy to return to The Great Gatsby. I read the first Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal yesterday and really liked it, after reading #3 several days before. I'm looking forward to the library getting #2 in the series. My current book is The Days of Anna Madrigal.

message 618: by Random (new)

Random | 7 comments About to start reading Cuckoo Song. It's supposed to be a YA novels (horror) that transcends its age range and has many adult fans too. The story sounded intriguing so it's next on my list of books to read.

I'm going to read that soon too. I love Frances Hardinge. Her use of language is wonderful and she has a very unique mind. Cuckoo Song was a British Science Fiction Association Award Nominee for best novel in 2014.

Judy (judygreeneyes) | 107 comments Today I finished Annihilation Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1) by Jeff VanderMeer by Jeff VanderMeer. I highly recommend it, really creative sci-fi.

Also working my way through the Kate Shugak series of mysteries that take place in Alaska, by Dana Stabenow. Great tough Native Alaskan female protagonist.

I absolutely loved Ready Player One.

message 629: by Banner (new)

Banner | 171 comments I am enjoying the heck out of The Chaplain's War. The only way I see this not being a five star is if zombies start coming out in the last chapter.

message 630: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Murphy (buballero) | 2 comments I read "Ready Player One" and "Annihilation" enjoyed both immensely. Starting on "I am Alive and You are Dead: A Journey into the Mind of Philip K. Dick" by Emmanuel Carrere - excellent French writer who wrote the Adversary which I can't recommend enough. Happy reading everyone!

message 631: by Mubbles (new)

Mubbles | 10 comments Just finished the first two books in Brian Staveley's Unhewn Throne trilogy...really enjoyed them and looking forward to getting started on the third.also just reread World War Z by Max Brooks which is one of the best of its type out there.it's just a brilliantly told zombie apocalypse tale but one with a lot more thought and intelligence than the average in this genre.well worth a look.

message 632: by Sumant (new)

Sumant Here is my review of small favor, which is 10th book in dresden files series.

message 633: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments @Mubbles I agree with you that the first two books in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley are awesome!!

Also looking forward to reading The Dark Forest but I'm going to save that for my Labor Day vacation to Nyc for the U.S. Open!

message 634: by Random (last edited Aug 21, 2015 10:36AM) (new)

Random | 7 comments Been busy reading Cuckoo Song. Holy moly it is Creepy! Love it! How in the world have I never heard of this lady and why is she having to be published by a small art-house publisher instead of one of the bigger companies?

I only learned about her because I saw the book in the New Additions section of my local library and I loved the look of the creepy cover and picked it up on a whim.

message 635: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 111 comments Yes Frances Hardinge is a terrific writer!

message 636: by Allison (new)

Allison I just finished Eon by Greg Bear. Next up is Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix.

I am expecting urban fantasy maybe in the style of the Dresden Files???

message 642: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I don't think it's nearly as good as Dresden, but then I feel that way about pretty much all other Urban Fantasy.

message 643: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne True:)

Jonathon (jonathonb) | 4 comments Time Salvager (Time Salvager #1) by Wesley Chu

it's really not very good. But I refuse to dnf!

message 647: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Time Salvager gets better as it goes on, in my opinion. It's not as good as his Tao books though.

message 648: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (psramsey) | 393 comments Finally finished Reamde. This was not the book I expected. It reminded me of a Carl Hiaasen novel with 90 percent less humor and seven hundred extra pages. The ending was satisfactory, but it did not take that many pages to get there.

I have Seveneves queued up on the TBR pile, but I think I'm going to take a break from the doorstops.

message 649: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finished reading Uprooted and enjoyed it a lot, with some minor issues. (My Review)
