Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments Happy Sunday to my favorite Bookie Monsters LOL I hope all is going well for all of you. I picked up my grandsons on Thursday and I think they had some kind of stomach bug. So we have been battling that the last few days. I'm getting a little reading time in but not as much as I would like. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get sick. They are here for a week while the parents are out of town.

Take care and stay cool. We've had some bad storms the last 2 days, which only makes it that much muggier : (

Jen Sabo | 547 comments I just wanted to check in, I've been a little busy this weekend/last week. I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a trip to Alaska, which has been on my bucket list for a while. I love reading while flying.

I hope everyone has been having a great weekend and enjoying their books!

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments I finished The Devouring Gray super early this morning. One of the MC uses a sword.

message 1154: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) | 1339 comments I hope your husband's surgery goes well Trinia.

Those of you going on vacation have fun.

I will be traveling for work Tuesday through Friday. I'm not sure what kind of reading I'll get done since I'm traveling and sharing a room with a very chatty coworker.

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments The Throne of Fire (The Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan

Does the title look like gold letters?

message 1156: by Louise (last edited Jul 11, 2022 12:47PM) (new)

Louise | 3331 comments @Jax please add Mary Jane to your TT shelf.

message 1157: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey Team! I finished From Bad to Cursed today - which knocked out the Python. I'm going to go see what kind of trouble we can cause with the bank. Cross your fingers! :)

message 1158: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Well that didn't go as planned. LOL

I'm going to go through the bank and see what we can do - but if anyone has read one that qualifies give a shout out!

Penanggalan

The Penanggalan has been hunting on your city streets. They may not be well known in this part of the world, but that doesn't make them less deadly. Learn what you can about them before planning your attack, it may be what saves your life.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book 800 pages or longer.
2.) Read a book set in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timore-Leste, Vietnam).
3.) Read a book where author identifies as female.
4.) Read a book with MPG Paranormal.
5.) Read a book with the word "vinegar" in text.

message 1159: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Good News! Jenn's read of For Better or Cursed knocked out tasks 3-5 for Pennanggalan!

Neutral News We need a book set in Southeast Asia, which is defined for the task as the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam. At a glance, it doesn't look like we had anything in the bank.

Bad News We need another 800+ page book. WAHHH. Of course the next Wheel of Time book is only 624.

We do have two 800+ page books in play, but we have three 800+ monsters to slay (Kraken, Hydra, Penanggalan). We may just interchangeably use the 800+ books for whichever other tasks are completed first - we'll see how it goes.

message 1160: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments Finished The Witch's Heart today and got the DQs answered and on the SS. For Battleship.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments EEK I have a book finishing that is in Turkey but none on the list or any 800. We have four days for the monsters, but with time zone difference no sure. :/

message 1162: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments Found a short Filipino book

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Finished and updated for Ararat (fit Adventure MPG) and Poirot's Christmas.

Looks like we have the Kraken drowned down

message 1164: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Perfect! I just put in a request for a new monster, let's see what we can do :)

message 1165: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments It looks like no one is around to spin a new monster, so I'm going to go make some dinner and hopefully have a monster when I get back!

I probably won't finish Zeus tonight, but definitely tomorrow. I was SO into it last night I had to force myself to go to sleep! I'm going to try and read a bit tonight, but not sure how successful I will be. We had an accident at my shop this morning and, long story short no gory details, someone is very fortunate to only have a broken arm right now. It was a day and I am mentally exhausted. So we'll see how the night shakes out.

message 1166: by Vian (new)

Vian (vianvamp) | 363 comments I'm finally able to catch up on some reading.

We closed the show I was stage managing so it's been crazy this past weekend. But I'm now on vacation.

I finished The Romantic Agenda for sandals on the cover, which should finish off that monster. I also need to remember that I don't generally like romance books for a reason, lol.

I'm almost done with the Blood of Elves, so hopefully by tomorrow that should be done. After that, I'll start Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for 800+ pages.

message 1167: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Looks like we're going to need a #6 in a series book for the new Stymphalian Birds, but let me go see what other new monster we get for the monster Vian finished up!

message 1168: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Vicky wrote: "Looks like we're going to need a #6 in a series book for the new Stymphalian Birds, but let me go see what other new monster we get for the monster Vian finished up!"

I've got #6 in the Stephanie Plum series queued up I can start it tomorrow.

message 1169: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Perfect, Jax!

Don't think there's too much more damage to be done here tonight, so I'm going to clean up dinner and head to bed early to hopefully get in some reading. Here's the update!

2 Days, 20.5 Hours Until End of Mini (Friday 9pm London, 4pm EST)

Typhon
1. 500-650 Pages // Legendborn, Jax
2-5. Volcano, Lightning, ZEUS, Father // Zeus, Vick

Lernean Hydra
3. Gold Text on Cover // Midnight Bayou, Louise?
5. 9 or Higher in a Series // Later Gator, Louise?

Pennanggalan
1. 800+ Pages // HP OotP, Vian
2. Set in Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timore-Leste, Vietnam) //

Stymphalian Birds
2. 6 in a Series // Hot Six, Jax

Colchian Dragon
3. Musical Instrument on the Cover //
4. MPG Epic Fantasy // The Dragon Reborn, Vicky OR Blood of Elves, Vian

message 1170: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I see in my update feed that Vian finished Blood of Elves, so I'm going to pause The Dragon Reborn and have a quick rock star romance with an instrument on the cover to read this morning.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Oooh on the quick rock star romance lol

I snuck in a school ya PNR romance randomly last night instead of keeping with the reading plans I should, but was in the mood lol

message 1172: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 286 comments Went ahead and started Hot Six last night and finished it this morning so we could cycle another monster. Should have Legendborn finished later today.

Also noticed the next mini is posted. Looks like it starts as soon as this one ends.

message 1173: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Awesome! I finished Lick today as well for the musical instrument so that'll be two monsters down!

I just picked up a book set in Singapore that I should finish tomorrow and will hopefully finish Zeus tonight. I think I'm just shy of the 75% mark so it should be a quick finish!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments The next mini looks intense but fun. Glanced over it quickly in between work - busy day.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Looked again.

So, next mini is BUSY, tons of books, and TONS of fun. Love the variety for everything.

Can't wait to start, especially things like the pairs - ball gowns and building most should be pretty easy

Only one I am not getting yet is -

Numbers don’t interest Polyhymnia as much as they do Urania, but geometry and shapes certainly catch her eye. To pay homage to this muse, we’d like you to create 3 title squares (I.e. 12 books).

The book along the top and down the left edge should share the 1st letter. The book along the top’s last letter should match the right hand edge’s 1st letter.

The book along the bottom should have the same 1st letter as the last letter of the book on the left and a matching last letter with the book on right.

Hopefully someone else gets that one! Maybe when it's down as a visual I'll get an aha moment. :)

message 1176: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments Just finished a book set in The Phillipines. Should have Midnight Bayou finished tomorrow and Later Gator on Friday before the next mini starts.

message 1177: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Ohhh yay so many books done today! I had an overtime day but I'm heading home now to play.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I found a few books team members have read that I can read for the part of the mini, Calliope

message 1181: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Hey Team! We got another Caucasian Eagle and a Drop Bear. I'm going to go through the spreadsheet now and see what we've got banked, but they're both newer so if you've read anything that will fit let me know! :)

Caucasian Eagle

The Caucasian Eagle has taken to the skies over your lands in the search of do-gooders who don't think the rules apply to them. Not so hard to defeat with a little effort and maybe setting some traps with organ meat.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 200 and 299 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Russia.
3.) Read a book with a bird on the cover.
4.) Read a book with the letters LIVER in title (any order)
5.) Read a book where a character goes to prison/jail (or is already there).

Drop Bear

The Drop Bear has been rumored to inhabit your wooded lands. They may look cute and cuddly but beware they are very hard to defeat and come out of nowhere. Just remember, all wildlife from Australia is apparently out to kill you, no matter how cute.

To vanquish this monster you must:
1.) Read a book between 500 and 650 pages (inclusive).
2.) Read a book set in Australia.
3.) Read a book with a surprise twist (your interpretation).
4.) Read a book with a carnivore on the cover (make sure it's not an omnivore!).
5.) Read a book with author initials found in VEGEMiTE.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Crushed one bird to get another. Disturbing eagle image, but come on, that Kaola is adorable

Russia and Australia though? Yech. I know I don't have anything banked currently for those. Actually all my banked may be used for the time being.

This one is definitely visual! This is the idea, only with the first/last letters of the titles matching in the four corners:

H E L L O
U L
N I
T V
E E
R U S T S

Penannggalan
1. 800+ Pages // HP & OotP, Vian

Drop Bear
1. 500-650 Pages //

3. Has a Surprise Twist // I'm sure there's something in the bank that will work for this - so feel free to fill in if you've read something!

Stymphalian Birds
2. #6 in a series //
5. Features a Bird // Visions, Erin you had this listed on the spreadsheet, can you fill in how it works please! :)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I'm very excited on the new mini. Planned some pairs and set aside books for other categories, we'll see what's finished when. Figured Thinking Clio would be good for spares / last since that fits a lot of books that don't fit elsewhere - well, if you're like me, who has literally over 1000 books owned and unread lol

message 1191: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I'm also excited for the new mini. The monster mini has been so much fun, but I'll be looking forward to the slower pace of the inspiration mini!

I think over the next few days if we could all share a few books that we want to get to read over the next month, we can use that as a jumping off spot for some of the sections - I'm looking at you, title squares and comedy/tragedy writing tasks!

I agree that Clio will be a pretty solid "dumping ground" for books that don't fit elsewhere!

I think Calliope will be super easy with buddy reads - if anyone is planning to read Ariadne and hasn't started yet, wait until after the new mini starts! We could also pile up on Malibu Rising once the first person finishes.

message 1192: by Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (last edited Jul 13, 2022 05:42PM) (new)

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I forgot on the group reads, that is true for Calliope

In a fantasy mood so will also start Wolf's Bane that works and has a good page count.

I have two books next in my series that always mention food figured would work for Food/Drink, and have some pairs put together for when I get to those.

I have Ghouls, Ghouls, and Ghouls on its way from Thrift books, as 5th in series, and plan to read more of it and Pendergast series for later series numbers if we need those of for the series climbing portion later.

The Polyhymnia will need some working together cooperation (thanks for the visual, that helps a lot)

message 1193: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1573 comments I'm planning on reading both Ariadne and Malibu Rising. I will probably finish one more book before the Friday deadline but I'm not sure.

message 1194: by Louise (new)

Louise | 3331 comments Note: partial points for monsters are allowed for up to 5 monsters.

I don't think I had this stated in the rules, but you can get the 5 bonus points for any task completed on the monsters by the end of the Monster Mini.

Figured as we were less than 48 hours away from the end of Monsters, I'd answer the question before it was asked.

I know that feeling my TBR is huge still trying to whittle it down

message 1196: by Robin (Saturndoo) (new)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments Hello Team!!!

Not a whole lot going on here. It has been hot and muggy here. Have had severe thunderstorms the last 3-4 days. The littles (my two grandsons) are still here. 2 more days and things should be back to normal--crossing fingers, toes, arm, legs LOL Both of them have been sick and running fevers the whole time they've been here(6 days). I think the 3 yo is cutting some teeth(molars) and I had to take the 4 yo to the urgent care clinic yesterday--he has swimmer's ear :( I'm beyond ready for some rest and relaxation.

I'm still reading/listening as much as I can. I did manage to get Lonesome Dove finished. I found the forgotten copy on my bookshelf when I was reorganizing my books. I absolutely loved the movie and love the book as much. I will be updating the SS as soon as I post this.

I haven't read through the mini challenge but super excited for it. The writing of the comedy/tragedy should be fun : ) Not sure what I will be reading but being the unorganized reader that I am, I will try to get some ideas/books together.

Stay cool and happy reading : ) I will check back in, in the next day or two : )

message 1197: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I realized this morning that The Dragon Reborn which I had paused for the rock star romance fits the 500-650 pages task. I've got 8.5 hours of listening time at the speed I'm listening, so I'm going to try and push through it today so I can maybe squeeze one more short audio in tomorrow.

message 1198: by Kerri (new)

Kerri (kerrimcbooknerd) | 1200 comments I love that there's so many possibilities in the new mini!

As for my reading plans, I'm definitely picking up Malibu Rising, so hopefully that can go towards Calliope. I'm also planning on reading Hide, which seems like a good word to throw into a tragedy title. I'm also planning on reading The Neverending Story, which has definitely been on my TBR more than a year. I'm not sure what else I'll be picking up, but I'm sure we can make it fit into one of these!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments All my books have been used now that visions has been placed, but curious if this works for gold lettering from Jennifer?
