Review: I have loved this series so much. The author really hid exactly how extensively horrifying Marissa's childhood was prior to this book. I was NOT ready for that story. And I was NOT ready for the tears that the story brought on. I also see where the idea for Keyton/Dare came from now. I originally came upon the Fulton crew as I started out as a Rittenhouse reader which includes Liv and Ford's story. Jules gets her own brush with the Rittenhouse Kings in Third Time as she and Berk work out their relationship. But I had been DYING waiting for LJ and Marissa's story ever since she was Liv's roomie. This book didn't disappoint. In fact this book took the fun, open, teasing friendly flirty friendship these two had and gave it a back story so ridiculously ridden with childhood traumas and struggles that I'm crazy amazed at the strength of these characters as humans. I'm also amazed she even wrote them with large physical gaps of time apart so they could ease themselves out of their codependency with each major life change. These pieces were handled beautifully in the plot and weren't called out in the manner I'm stating them, but it is what they are. Major life changes, further forays into the world of adulthood and LJ and Marissa separate for a time. To remind themselves that they can. And that they need to. Then it hurts too much and they find their way back to each other like magnets. The fact that Marissa is even in college and pursuing the degrees she's getting!! My degree actually is the fashion/textile and art version of hers complete with those chemistry classes. Those degrees are NOT easy. It's a crazy amount of time, effort, drive and your course load is insanity. Maya wrote one smart, driven, determined, tough as nails little woman in there. She also wrote these two an almost impossible love story. What could have been a long drawn out angsty plot or a cute cotton candy plot or white knight syndrome plot was instead a pure love that had so much give and take on both sides in ways that can never be repaid. This was where Marissa's unstable home life and LJ's unwavering loving childhood home caused the conflict in their relationship. That and the lies these two have told each other over the course of 14 years in order to cover up mature feelings at too young of an age, lies that would let one of them protect and care for the other in a way they could accept. It's these lies that hurt the most as when they come to light it makes the other person question their place and their worth in the relationship.
While this series was a slow build up of ever heavier stories and plots the closer everyone came to graduation...it truly sets up The Art of Falling For You in a MUCH stronger way that I could have appreciated. I would say now that readers should pick up Fourth Times the Charm as a pre read to The Art trilogy. It gives you a good glimpse into Keyton's life but it also gives you an understanding of how much Maya really and truly pushes herself out of her comfort zone with The Art books. It's that author growth that I love to see.

I am addicted to this series as well as the Rittenhouse Kings series. I still want to slap Colum so so so badly for the way he treats Ford. And Emmett's parents need a bit of rough, ragged, highly unkind drag through of real life for what they did to Avery and Emmett.

But LJ and Marissa --- ooohh. I was all ready for Nerf Wars, candy and movie fights, stupid nit picky arguments to hide the attraction and instead we got the lower version of The Art of Falling - with one last Nerf War battle. Sort of.

Maya seriously out does herself sometimes with these stories. I've had to space out the Dare/Keyton books by MONTHS because they leave my heart so stinking raw. They are my "You are going to open this and you are going to cry. Ugly cry. And it probably won't be perfect in the end - but it will be real."

Holy cats, it’s good!
You can be a better man
When you have good friends.

That's my original review. I finished and literally bought the next one and started reading at 11:05pm. It's been a huge pleasure to re-read this series in anticipation of The Long Game.

Reading the series again, in order, I realize how there are 2 books (1 & 4) about coming out and coming into yourself; 2 books about learning to love yourself and be a better person outside of your sexuality (3 & 5) and 2--about Ilya and Shane--about the toll of hiding your love away. It really is a brilliant series and the men are all different (both the players and their lovers) but familiar and true.

I really can't recommend this series enough.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: I wasn't sure how this story was going to play out - but sign me up for a stay at Camp Pour Judgement. It's a real life camp for grown ups where it's encouraged to let loose and indulge in all the things, responsibly over course.

Rhett sees Korie at a Hollywood party and was pretty much smitten at first sight. He needed to get closer to her, but being a super hot and sought after country music star he had to be creative. It helped that her cousin was his friend and fellow band mate. So when he heard that was attending camp he signed his sexy ass up.

Korie & Rhett were hilarious together. I giggled SO much while reading this one. They had tons of fun together and their chemistry was fire. What happens when it's not all fun and games anymore?? Will they be able to crush all the obstacles in their way or will they overcome?

I'm all for the guy being the pursuer ... and man did Rhett now how to accomplish that.

The proper edition is the thing that takes me forever as well. If you pick a classic it's a nightmare (you can see that on the current Q&A thread for this challenge)

What I do to find the oldest dated Kindle Edition or an edition that is noted as "Original Kindle" or "First Kindle" edition is as follows:

Using - Romancing Mr Bridgerton you'd open up the "All Editions" tab in the book's meta details. I typically keep my settings to 100 or infinite scroll for these stinkers so I can look forwards and backwards easily and compare dates on the different publications.

The first Kindle Edition I see is:
Published November 24th 2015 by Avon
Kindle Edition, 418 pages

To make sure this is the FIRST Kindle edition I'll be looking for anything Kindle Edition, English Language, that is dated no later than 11/24/2015. If there IS a Kindle Edition that is published earlier than 11/24/2015 than THAT edition automatically becomes the "first edition" until I've gone through all of the other available editions.

Sadly for me, I have picked the WORST book as an example. There are 124 editions of this sucker.

I've also found that there ARE earlier Kindle Editions for this book. The two earlier ones are:

#1 Published December 3rd 2009 by Piatkus
Kindle Edition, 384 pages
and
#2 Published by Harper Collins
Kindle Edition, 370 pages

As the Harper Collins version
1- has fewer pages
2- doesn't note a kindle edition pub date
3- is the OG publisher for Ms. Quinn

More than likely I'd note the 370 page version and link it to my post as it's the lower page count and it's the OG publisher with rights to the book. The meta details for that edition also include the ASIN whereas the meta details for the version published by Piatkus do not. If needed it's easier to track down a book's history with the ASIN.

If I wanted to be picky, or appease my research compulsion, I would open both editions up in Amazon to see which has the earlier publication date and make sure the ASIN numbers for both copies match. If they do, then I would choose the version that has the earliest pub date per Amazon, note that information in my post, and then reach out on the Q&A thread asking if a GR Librarian could help me get the pub date added to the Harper Collins edition.

Again, I will point out that I am SUPER extra when it comes to books and research and notations as -

1- my mom is a retired librarian and I have inherited her issues
2- I just like to research stuff. Any stuff. It's ADHD.

Hopefully this helps a little? And if MKat finds this she'll correct whatever I have said that is incorrect :-)

We're almost there. All 4 of us need to log our reads and then we're all set. Even though we're over the number of pages needed we still need to finish the task as a team. I did go ahead and get the completion post all prepped and to be updated and them moved over to the Q&A thread when we're all set though.

I know the rules for this one are wonky and it moves at a quick pace.

Sometimes I like it a bit better than Bachelor as with that challenge I'm reading book after book of the same theme all week long and it feels like the week will never end.

But then I also forget that there are week long challenges I'm doing, like my PtP with Kira. I was late getting my read in and logged with my team there for last week. 🤦

And I think my team captain for Uno is having kittens over my reading speed as I'm taking forever to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn .. which I'll finish tomorrow, but I know we need it for our last hand. I've just been reading all over the place lately. And my focus has been crap.

This week is also NOT going the way it was supposed to and it's only - Tuesday? I think? I hope.

Review: The sleep running premise of this hooked me right away. I used to sleepwalk when stressed. It was not a good time. Maybe I still do and just haven't gone far enough to notice? The romance was super slow burn. But forbidden romance and age gap are both tropes that usually work well for me. I also appreciated that the characters were not always entirely likeable. I'm a sucker for flawed people and situations.

Thanks Kira! I didn't mean to push you along.

This book sounds good! I used to sleep walk as well. I haven't for a long time, but I still talk in my sleep. I also still get night terrors even as a middle aged adult. Those my husband would really like to get rid of. Our kids both talk in their sleep as well. It's weird to hear them having conversations with "invisible" people in the dead of the night.

Sorry to keep being the last to complete! 🙈
I'm really enjoying playing with you all so far. I just need to figure out the pace/scheduling a little better. I really wish Goodreads was more mobile friendly.
I'm about to rush back to work for a meeting, but at least they're getting us supper!
I feel like most weeks don't go the way they're supposed to for me 😂

Maggie, you were all good on PTP! The deadlines are pretty flexible. I would have been on your case if you were actually going to be late 😂

I'm also participating in Uno for the first time and not really loving it. It's a fun idea. I just don't really feel part of the team I guess? 2 or 3 people plan out what they're going to read for everything. And I don't want to steal their thunder? So I just read whatever I feel like and hope it's useful somewhere. But I'm definitely missing the sense of accountability/camaraderie that I like in the RRRC challenges.

MountainKat | 31597 comments As for getting the page count - I have gotten really good at it running this and Bachelor. If there are more than a handful of editions when I go to the editions page, I sort the list by format using the Kindle edition. Then I look down that list for the earliest dated edition, confirm it is English and that is what I'm looking for. That is usually as much as is necessary, but sometimes you need to further sort by publication date. Classics are a pain and I am not excessively picky with those! This is basically what I am looking for:

If your page count comes from a Kindle edition published on the initial publication date on the editions page, it will count. If your page count comes from a Kindle edition labeled '1st edition', it will count. If your page count comes from the earliest dated English language Kindle edition, it will count. I am looking for one of those three things when confirming your books! As long the page count you list is correct, I will accept any link to the book. Ebook page count will be acceptable if no Kindle page count available. The acceptability of other page counts will be made on an individual basis.

In Maggie's example above, I would want the Piatkus edition because it is dated. 😉 I do not have the time or energy to research the ASIN numbers for further info, but I appreciate those who do and get things corrected here on GR. I'd rather be reading though. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️📚

Review: When an author's recommended playlist for a book includes "Bodies" by Drowning Pool, you know you're in for a wild ride. There was quite a lot of violence/gore in this one. Also a lot sex. Sometimes simultaneously or in very close temporal proximity. Torturing her victims turns the heroine on. Personally, I found the book hot despite the gore rather than because of the gore. I think. I have a weird mix of feelings right now. Overall, I kind of loved this. But, I am slightly concerned with what that says about me.

Revenges plans don't always go as planned. Sometimes you act before you really think it through - that's why you end up spending loads of money for a night with the guy who broke your heart 13 years ago. It backfired from the start and it was fun to watch Emma and her girl gang back pedal to try to save face.

I really liked Jesse aka Baby Boston. From the start, even though I probably should have hated him. I liked Emma as well. Together these two were oh so sexy! The push and pull, wanting to be the boss and in control was so good. Brought the story to life!

Review: This was a new to me author, but now I'm hooked. Between the story line, the humor, and the characters the story was amazing. The author managed to balance just the right amount of Rockstar story with unexpected dad story with broken human story. She never overplayed any of these themes and kept them all perfectly balanced yet intertwined. Nick is a character who has been let down by everyone who was supposed to love him. He also knows and recognizes that he struggles with ADHD and addiction issues. He doesn't know how to address them properly, but he recognizes they are there and they have a massive impact on this life. Raven is someone who loves him no matter how much it hurts her. Which is out of character for her. With her friends helping her learn to really put her foot down on boundaries and limits for her relationship with Nick so that they BOTH can learn that he needs that in his life. That he can learn that healthy relationships aren't about pushing someone to their limits and then waiting for them to leave over and over. That story alone would have made for a decent book. Add in the "you are the proud winner of two new toddlers!" and Nick's desperation to not attach himself to them or determination to love them when all of those around him are scrambling to keep the kiddos safe, happy, and loved KNOWING he will at some point do this for himself - that was gut and tear wrenching. Yes this book hit my "make me cry spontaneously more than once 5 star" bar. I think just as much time laughing as I did crying. As I said it's a beautifully balanced book. Another thing I loved about it is that this is a book about chart topping, groupie catching a band on a big tour.... yet other than the tour buses, some practices, and the well used show or two - it's really NOT. It's the story of friends who formed a band, became very successful at their jobs, but are still just that - FRIENDS. It's more about the guys not letting Nick slide anymore. Or walk away from his demons anymore. They realized that his "time to grow up" was in front of them and they forced it on him. The band was just - a plot device to keep this group of people in a bubble and place extra pressure and extra space on them. I think I've only seen it used a few other times before. When written properly it works very well. It keeps the urgency, weariness, and the grind of a working musician at the forefront of the readers' mind and pushes them back from "shiny shiny rock god" I know Julia Wolf has written at least one of her Blue is The Color books in this manner. It's humanizes the seemingly untouchable. Also, again this author hits another big win for me with writing accurately regarding mental issues. Nick has ADHD. I know this is on the DSM4 however I hesitate to classify this as an "illness" well, I guess honestly nothing on the DSM4 is an "illness" in truth. You either have a malfunctioning crazy gene or brain that runs your life in an interesting way or you don't. it's not like you can "catch it" just walking around town. Either way. The author subtly captures ADHD at it's finest and then accurately blends it into what can happen with it given the cocktail of abuse and abandonment. Nick appears to rate high on both points of the AD and the HD scales given his written characteristics. His addiction and self medication levels are actually at the lower end of what I have seen. Him even reaching a point where he realizes how destructive it is to his long term goals is amazing. It is feasible and I have also seen it happen. Meetings would have stretched into other therapy in the long run is the road I've seen happen with real humans. So....now that I've cried my heart out over Raven, the twins, and Nick - I desperately NEED Lyle's story. Like - tomorrow.

M and Kirsten thanks so much for picking up the two extra books! I'm reading Gucci for another challenge as well. So at this point it's whomever finishes that 6th book first and we're good to go.

I'll post the links to the current completion posts in the next message so they are easy to find.

I'm also going to work on writing less "wall of text" reviews. Plus side - I've only read one book for this so far that made my jaw hurt from grinding my teeth LOL

Review The hopes I had for this book were HIGH and this author went above and beyond that! Holy hotness this book was everything I wanted and SOOOOO much more!! Book 2 brought even more heat and sexy times, more mystery and more angst.

Rebecca and her Crows - Ezra, Killian and Aiden. Finally, secrets and half truths are coming to light and emotions are all over the place. Bex is coming into her own and it's a beautiful thing to see. All the horror that she endured at the hands of one evil man will not define her. Now, are the Crows gonna step up and help her rise from the ashes or will they push her away like she's nothing again. E is at the top of my list. He is everything! Kill is coming around and I can't wait to see what the enforcers next step will be to help make his Bex whole again. Aiden, well I still want to smack him, repeatedly. Open your eyes Prez - you're missing too much.
There's tons I want to say, but... spoilers! Ugh!

Guess you'll just have to read book 2 to find out just what went on with these 4 and then wait with not so patiently for the next book with me!! WTH Gabby, you trying to break me??

Good luck to your oldest!!
I understand the travel for sports. We typically have that in the spring with soccer, we're taking this season off but we'll be back to it in the fall. And we live in a state that can be crossed in under two hours. I can't imagine in CA!

I hope you all have perfect ball weather so you aren't freezing, burning up, or soaking wet. Hope he has a wonderful time and you get to enjoy time out as a family! Don't worry about us. We'll wait on you. No rush.

I am so behind on our thread here. UUGGHHH

This week went wonky in both good and bad ways.

Kira you aren't the only one whose weeks never seem to go the way you think they will be going LOL. I'll get two weeks of normalcy and then either my kids themselves, their schools, or just the universe will throw something into the works. This week I got some cool good stuff along with the "are you KIDDING me?" so apparently past life me wasn't THAT big of a pain in the arse at this time period.

I understand your feelings on Uno as well. My team is sort of all spread out. I just read what I read and then let them let me know what it fits. I usually only speak up for color cards and our mini tasks. My team has had some players go through some rough real world issues and one player hit a massive reading slump but the team as a whole is really kind. We're spread out across the globe so time zones and overlap of postings seem to be our biggest challenges. I'll give it a go one more time to see if it fits. I've had rocky starts with other challenges as I got my feet settled with them and then they turn into my favorites.

DO NOT WORRY about posting in here. Never ever feel like we're rushing you! If I reach out it's really just to make sure you are okay. I care about the person more than the challenge. We're reading for fun, but I love getting to chat with and meet new people in the RRRC. If we happen to win bragging rights on a challenge cool. If not - it's okay. We still played and we played together.

In about a month, summer rec league swim team starts for our family, knocking out our Saturdays for 6+ weeks. Ivy swims and junior coaches; Josh times; I’m a stroke and turn judge. It’s my favorite thing. Have fun this weekend.

And I was so ready to read those 2 books so it was easy to pick the extra up.

I tend to word vomit and stream of conscious write. It's how I typically review and write overall. When I'm actually writing it's easier to edit as I'm editing "the voices in my head" so I can tell them to shush. When I'm reviewing for a PR or author I'll go back and edit myself so it's not crazy or remove things that edge into spoilers per the author or the PR firm. I'm forgetting to that with this challenge and the PtP as I'm usually trying to get everything out of my head and move on. I should really take that time to let it sit and then write it out.

Always the same book:
Snarky banter, steamy sex,
opposites attract.

I liked this a bunch, but it was shorter and shallower than her best work, and as lazy as her worst (which is still better than most).
