Margaret (margarette) | 378 comments I love mysteries and I think most of my favorites have been mentioned, but here's one for anybody looking for historic fiction tagged detectve:
Devil in a Blue Dress, book 1 of the Easy Rawlins series by Walter Mosley
Devil in a Blue Dress
It's set in the 1940s and Easy, a black veteran of WW2, has just lost his job to a white man. He agrees to do some investigating for an unsavory character because he needs the money to pay his mortage, which is very important to him because it's the first time he's lived in a house that didn't belong to a slumlord. The series became too violent for me, but I loved this first book and the Easy character.

Cora (corareading) | 1921 comments If anyone is looking for a fantasy option that is not paranormal, I really liked City of Stairs. The main character is more spy than detective, she definitely investigates a mystery and 4 people tagged it detective.

As Robin says, for monthly theme, you just need to believe it fits. For example, I would absolutely fit true crime non-fiction The Feather Thief into detective monthly tag because it includes report on the investigations into the theft, though I would personally not tag it detective for various reasons.

Thanks for those comments. I found farleigh too light as well, but I kept it for a day when I need something easy and cozy. I saw part of the Child 44 film and I knew I wanted to know more.

I can't tell from the blurbs which Connelly books I read, but this one does sound good, and I'll follow your advice.
