D'oh! Hopefully you'll pick the right direction next time. I suspect we'll all have moments like that during this game...

I wanted to go east too at the start, but my prompt was to read a book with a page number that was a prime number, so that ruled east out. I've been stuck on a never-ending journey south since then, lol!

message 203: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Well, Sammy, my only choice after going north twice back to the only branch is east! So I will be picking the right direction, at least for one move hahaha

Sorry Sam, I accidentally set it up as easy. Just ignore the tasks for now.

Did you find one? I'm procrastinating at work, so searched my lists for you and found these published on the 17th:

One Second After by William Forstchen
Atonement by Ian McEwan
Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kroger
These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong
The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
In the Woods by Tana French
The Grownup by Gillian Flynn
Forward Collection Series - 6 short kindle books curated by Blake Crouch.
The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark

LOL it's okay at least my next task wasn't too difficult to get me going west again

message 208: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments ARGH! So I read 'Wonder' for the dreaded YA task (thanks for the rec!), and hit a dead end and have to move back up to the start again. (while grumbling about the book needing a lion. I can only think of one series with lions, and I'm SO not reading those! lol)

Will the tasks change when we go back over the same spaces, or stay the same? If they're the same, I'll have the same dilemma at the start of not being able to read a book with a prime number amount of pages to move east! A wee bit of a quandry, lol.

message 209: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments Is lion shifter acceptable for the lion task? I think I may have one of those...

message 210: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments Hey! What do you have against Mr. Tumnus and Reepicheep?

If it doesn't have to be a talking lion, then read Out of Africa, or search for books that take place in the African savanna.

The tasks will be randomly generated for every move so you'll probably get completely different things. I can't promise the same ones won't come up again though.

I'm feeling generous so shifters will be allowed.

message 213: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 28 comments it sucks cause some of the tasks only have one option and you have to make sure the task and the page count match to even move. I moved back twice lol. Now i'm stuck because i have to find Read a book where the ISBN10 number has 8 or more even numbers!!!!! I have had zero luck finding one with 8 even numbers!

OMG, that is hard. Okay, how about looking up books by isbn? Put in numbers with 8 even numbers and see what you get? Does zero count as even?

message 215: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments I went through a favorites list, and found some that are good.I found them from adding isbn13 to settings...(Of course the editions will be different isbns, but the ones on my list work.)

Some of the hard tasks are very hard, sorry you are finding it so difficult. Thanks to everyone who is searching their shelves to help people who are struggling to find something that works.

To put it in perspective there are:
260 easy tasks
480 medium tasks
350 hard tasks

Not all the hard tasks are as difficult as that one, but they tend to be things that require more in depth searching to find a book. Hopefully the mix you get helps you to find it enjoyable.

This is the first time we've tried this, so we're grateful for all of you being guinea pigs while we work out the kinks.

HELP IF STUCK
If people are stuck, you can spell out either HELP or SKIP using only books that work for the direction you want to go and post the spell out in the thread including the task you are skipping in the post. You can then use one of the books to complete the square in the maze.

If you get a few tasks that are too hard, we can always reset you to a different difficulty maze.

I absolutely adored those books as a kid. Then I tried reading them to my kids when they were little, and the patronising tone just made my skin crawl. Completely ruined all my good memories of those books. I prefer to leave childhood favourites be now, lol.

That's going to make life a lot easier, thank you!

And thanks for the shifters. I'm not convinced I'm going to love the book, but I got given the entire series about 7 years ago, and I really needed a kick up the backside to finally read at least one of them. I'll at least be able to finally remove them from my shelf if it doesn't go well, lol!

100% second [bookcover:We Are Legion (We Are Bob)|32109569] if you like sci-fi. LOVE those books.

message 224: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments I actually think all the hard tasks are brilliant (even if I'm grumbling, lol), because it gets us all talking and helping each other.
And while I'm predominantly trying to read books already on my tbr (so therefore I already own and really should have read already!), it's a great way of getting recs of books you'd never have thought of reading otherwise. :)

I found this page too and checked several of them and none of them have this tag on the first page.

Looking through the list quickly I've found The Jane Austen Book Club, The Amateur Marriage, Bet Me, Nighttime Is My Time.

The big names towards the top have so many reviews that 2004 doesn’t make an impact.

Ok maybe I misunderstood the assignment! I thought it had to be literally on the "first page" i.e. the page with all the info about the book and the top 10 shelves. But now I'm understanding that it means the first page of tags. Is that right? Thank you for finding these.

1st page of tags! Once I'm on my laptop for more than 5 mins I'm going to update the FAQs to make that clearer and include the info to skip a task.

stooopid! painful and stooopid, or just stupid?

I'm lucky that my first two tasks have been on the easier side, so I am expecting a run of hateful ISBN number tasks soon

message 235: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments I haven't run across it yet, but regarding the isbn tasks- when searching my books there are two searchable isbn options. Isbn and isbn13. American books tend to have 13 numbers in the isbn, so that is what I assume I would search. Is that correct?

So far within bearable limits and stoopid. not going to make any of my favourite lists however, lol.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Read a book with fairies... Do they have to be referred to by that spelling? Or would Faeries work? Weird question but books do generally make a distinction about it, especially UF Faeries.

If they are recognisably fairies (even if called a variant i.e. Fae or Faeries) that's fine. The same goes for Vamphires etc.

Holly Black usually uses fairies, not fae. I think.

Next up should be easy. A book listed on 1st page of tags as 'trilogy'. Just need to remember to look for a title in the first half of the alphabet! :)
