It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are taking it to the tent for the Great ATY Bake Off!

Around the Year

It's time to fill your bakery case with goodies. You will read books to bake sweets and pastries! Each pastry takes a different number of books, depending on complexity.

You can bake your pastries in any order that you'd like, and you can bake multiple pastries at once (infinite oven space!). Don't forget about your sprinkles! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 10 hours of audio listed to).

You'll want to create the best bakery case that you can bake, so make sure you have at least one of every type of goodie... they are all important to your score! You can have multiples of the same types of pastries as well.

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) How perfect! We just found out today that we have a bakery opening in our tiny little town. Everyone is so excited! What better way to celebrate than with a readathon about baking! lol

I have a pile of 6 or 7 short books lined up already. I'm going to spend some time this evening figuring out where they fit into these categories. I think the Chocolate Dipped Madelines are going to be the hardest to complete. What do you all think the most difficult prompts are?

message 4: by Kat (new)

Kat | 566 comments I love baking so this sounds incredible. An author named Madeleine definitely sounds like the hardest prompt. I've sorted out the books I hoped to get through this week so just need to work out if they all fit.

message 5: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) Hey team! *waves*
Looking forward to reading with you all.

I've put waaaay too much effort into pre-planning for this readalong; I deliberately started a long book and kept back the last 150 pages to read tomorrow! So I'm hoping that we'll be able to add a truffle foccacia to our bakery fairly quickly.

message 6: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 180 comments Hello team!
So excited for the readathon to start! Since it's the last week of the month I'll be finishing most of my February books.

message 7: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments This baking theme is definitely making me hungry!

I've added the two books I'm currently reading to the spreadsheet together with the book I must read next. I didn't want to add more than that, or it might make the spreadsheet overly complicated if we all add all of the books we hope to get to in the next week.

Normally I would have lots of short books lined up ready to go, but I have fallen into the trap of having too many library books out that I need to read by the end of the month. I can extend my loan on some of them, but most of them have had holds put on them by other people, so they will disappear if I don't get round to reading them. So whilst I will definitely be able to help with pages and audio hours, I might not be as flexible with helping to read for the actual prompts.

Also, is it just me, or do a lot of the prompts seem really specific, and actually quite difficult this time?

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Hannah wrote: "Also, is it just me, or do a lot of the prompts seem really specific, and actually quite difficult this time?r..."

Other than the first few for Madeleines, I didn't think they were too difficult UNTIL I started trying to match up my books with the list. Now, I am getting nervous!

JennH | 554 comments Hi Team Mixer! Excited to get started!

I have a number of books ready to read but will have to decide which will actually help the team. I have a 500+ page book that I had intended to read this week before the readathon started but barely made a dent in it. You know what they say about the best laid plans... Anyway, I'll decide tonight whether I will continue reading or put it aside bc I might not want to chance being bogged down by one book.

The prompts do seem somewhat specific, but I think we can do it!

message 10: by Kat (new)

Kat | 566 comments We'll all do what we can and hopefully have fun doing it.

I tend to read whatever I want for the first few days and then try and find books to fit specific prompts we are struggling with later in the week. I usually start some longer books the week before but forgot all about the Readathon until Thursday. February seems to have flown by.

message 11: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Good morning team mixer!

I'm currently reading House of Sky and Breath, I'd hoped to have been a bit further through before readathon but I think I'm only half way. They seem to eat pizza a lot, that's an important meal, right 🤣

message 12: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I've found a Madeleine book on my shelves, it's about a self replicating robot who eats her granny. 😮 If we get stuck on that one I'll give it a go.

message 13: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments Good Morning Team Mixer, the theme to The Great British Baking Show is stuck in my head. Here is my plan. I had started Black Leopard,Red Wolf Wednesday knowing I would put it down today. I have several short books picked out for the read-a-thon. My goal is to start & finish Passing by Nella Larsen.

message 14: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) Quick question - in your opinions, how much of a book has to take place in France for it to count as "set in France"? It just occurred to me that my long book, A Column of Fire, is partially set in Paris - two of the main POV characters are from there and the bulk of the narrative swaps between them and a third POV character who is mostly in England but occasionally travels to France. There are also a handful of other POV characters all over the place, but the main ones are usually in England or France.
Are we happy for that to count?

message 15: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments @Aimee I'd count that, it sounds like France is a significant setting.

message 16: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1156 comments I think I already screwed up. I thought this was starting yesterday and read so much in the book I was reading, that all I did was ensure that it couldn't be counted in the readathon. My short book that I was going to read hasn't come in yet.

message 17: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) Ellie wrote: "@Aimee I'd count that, it sounds like France is a significant setting."

Thanks! I think so too but it's always good to get confirmation. I'll put it down as 'set in France' when I finish (hopefully later today / early tomorrow) but we can always move it later if needed.

Oh no! I also had a little hiccup right out of the gate. I had a book that fit "shell on the cover", it was a cracked EGG shell (so witty, right?) I opened up the audiobook this morning and realized it's only a little over an hour long. I looked up the page count of the physical book.....46 pages. Ugh. My whole first day plan was out the window. I've pivoted to another book but I'm still bummed about the Egg book. :(

message 19: by JennH (new)

JennH | 554 comments I'm going to keep with The Redbreast as a 500+ page book.

With it still being the middle of the month, I thought that there would still be a week left to February after the readathon. Imagine my surprise last night when I realized that it goes to the end of the month. My battle plans had to be changed and rearranged bc there are other challenges I still need to fulfill that I thought I had time with my imaginary leftover week. *sigh* Now I have to read strategically so that my books satisfy multiple prompts across various challenges. Eek.

So I'm reading the aforementioned book and I'm listening to A Room with a View which will satisfy the Italy prompt.

To those who have had hiccups, don't forget that what you've read can go towards sprinkles, so it's all helpful! No need to be bummed!

message 20: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I’ve just finished Cloud Cuckoo Land and added it for a book with circles on the cover as it is the only option we have listed on the spreadsheet for this prompt.

If we need to move it to a different prompt later, then we can.

message 21: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments I finished Passing by Nella Larsen. I put it under mini rolls. A book with less than 250 pages.

message 22: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I finished House of Sky and Breath, since a few people have said they're reading long books, I've put it against newest book by an author I've read before.

message 23: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I finished Under Solomon Skies which I was reading for the first of the 3 'continents' prompts so I've put it down as 'book you're reading for AtY'. We're half way to our first mini roll guys!

message 24: by JennH (new)

JennH | 554 comments I finished A Room with a View under Cannolis for a book set in Italy.

message 25: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments Good Morning, My plan today is to continue reading My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson. I'm not sure I will finish today. It's short stories & I do read those pretty fast. I'm busier today till after lunch. Then I should be able to concentrate on my baking.

message 26: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'm gonna read Mooncakes this afternoon. Hopefully it has cakes in it! But it also has a yellow cover with a smiling person on.

message 27: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I plan to finish my Kindle book (Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day) and to start Viva Durant and the Madness of Madame Bouchard this morning. I should have time to at least start on Replaced as well. That is my plan anyway, the day may have other ideas!

message 28: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I've started reading vN for a book by a Madeleine, so fingers crossed!

message 29: by Kat (new)

Kat | 566 comments I finished Around the World in Eighty Days last night. I also read a great graphic novel Daytripper this morning and have made it about 20% into A Caribbean Mystery. That's the last book I have to read this week so can be a bit more flexible after that.

Thanks Ellie for going for a Madeline book. I had a look on Libby and it was very slim pickings.

message 30: by Aimee (last edited Feb 20, 2022 10:26AM) (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I finished A Column of Fire for "book set in France". I also finished The Shell Collector, which was a disappointing (but fortunately short) read, and I've put it down as "book with a shell on the cover".
So, along with Ellie's book, we're making headway on the madeleines now.

message 31: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments I finished My Monticello byJocelyn Nicole Johnson. I will put it somewhere on the spreadsheet in the morning. I’m tired.

message 32: by JennH (new)

JennH | 554 comments I just finished Not Your Sidekick but I'm not sure where to put it. It is a new to me author which we do have filled but it could possibly be considered for someone smiling on the cover.

Not Your Sidekick (Sidekick Squad, #1) by C.B. Lee

Thoughts?

Aimee (pebbles320) JennH wrote: "I just finished Not Your Sidekick but I'm not sure where to put it. It is a new to me author which we do have filled but it could possibly be considered for someone smiling on the c..."

I'd say there is a definite smile on that cover, but it's up to you. We will need multiples of the cakes so if you want to put it under yellow cover or new author for our next cannoli then go ahead :)

message 34: by Kat (new)

Kat | 566 comments We can definitely start filling in second cakes if there are no other options. It's only Monday so there is plenty of time to get the other prompts filled in.

message 35: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I'll just say we'll probably only get one Madeleine so focus on multiples of the other cakes.

I have today off work but I have to do all the things I've been putting off because of the storms. Even though it seems like we have another one today?! When will they end!

message 36: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments Good Morning, I put My Monticello My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson under mini rolls. Red on the cover. My current read is The Secret Lives of Church Ladies The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw . My goal is to finish today. Tomorrow is busy for me. I will probably check in during the evening.

message 37: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) Ooh I'm interested to hear your thoughts on The Secret Lives of Church Ladies; I have one friend who loved it and another who hated it with a passion!

message 38: by JennH (new)

JennH | 554 comments Thanks! I will pencil in Not Your Sidekick for smile for now since it's blank. For some reason, I was thinking a big cheesy grin was needed. Yellow? I didn't even think of that, it looked more orange to me. It can be moved, if necessary.

I enjoyed The Secret Lives of Church Ladies. I am not a short story person. Each of the short stories were perfect little packages. I often have problems with short stories and novellas, thinking that I want more or there should have been more. I thought these stories were well written and told their story exactly how they should have been.

message 39: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) JennH wrote: "Yellow? I didn't even think of that, it looked more orange to me."

Might just be my monitor! I think it works fine for the smile prompt though :)

message 40: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I’ve just finished and added my book And Then There Were None to the spreadsheet for a book featuring an important meal. All the guests on the island had dinner together before the murders started, so I’d say it was an important meal.

I’ll have a bit of time this evening to read more of my other books, but I won’t finish either of them for a few days.

message 41: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments The trip I thought I was taking tomorrow to visit my mother happened today so I hardly read today. Will do what I can tonight. On the upside I have all day tomorrow.

message 42: by Aimee (new)

Aimee (pebbles320) I finished Bittersweet this morning for "a book with a flavour word in the title", so we've successfully made our first focaccia! Mmmm tasty.

message 43: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I finished off a mini roll! I read Proposal for A Comfort Read (fluffy paranormal romance) and Burning Roses for Mostly Set In the Wilderness.

It looks like we need just two more prompts ('author named Madeliene' and 'next in a series') and we will have one of each item! Great job everyone!

message 44: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 180 comments I finished Once Upon a Broken Heart last night. Going to add it to the prompt "The newest book by an author you've already read"

message 45: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Aimee wrote: "I finished Bittersweet this morning for "a book with a flavour word in the title", so we've successfully made our first focaccia! Mmmm tasty."

Woohoo! I love focaccia, though I'd probably skip the truffle.

Hurrah! I will finish the Madeleine book some time this week. I have just remembered we have our rescheduled Christmas work party Thursday, so hopefully I can finish it tomorrow.

message 48: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1497 comments I finished The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw. I put it under the second mini roll, a short book.

message 49: by Kat (new)

Kat | 566 comments I have finished A Caribbean Mystery and put it against next in series so we have our first cannoli.

I'm off work tomorrow so hope to get quite a lot of reading in.
