I'll suggest The Valley of the Wolves by Laura Gallego Garcia, which does have a boy called Kai but he's not the main character.

Yup! The Valley of Wolves is the book. I had read it long back when I was a kid and remember only the boy named Kai and some magic going on in the fort. Now that you have mentioned the name of the book, I am quite sure it was this one.
