Good luck everyone!

Nichole | 1199 comments I've finished my FS book but I'm just too lazy and scattered to write my review tonight. I'll have it up tomorrow.

For Demons, I have 6 books I'm trying to decide between. :) They've all been picked for me in another group. Maybe after dinner is cooked I can make a decision.

Passion Unleashed (Demonica, #3) by Larissa Ione Demon from the Dark (Immortals After Dark, #10) by Kresley Cole Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4) by Darynda Jones Dance with the Devil (Dark-Hunter, #3) by Sherrilyn Kenyon Sins of the Heart (Otherkin, #1) by Eve Silver Heir to the Shadows (The Black Jewels, #2) by Anne Bishop

Review:

The first thing to grab my attention with this series were it's amazing titles. You see, I'm a huge Cowboy Clint Eastwood fan. He's one badass mother-trucker! How could I not want to read them?

clint eastwood photo: Clint Eastwood clint-nod_zps0362897e.gif

Tink's titties! It was an incredible journey and I loved every minute of it. It's filled with a colorful cast of characters that bring this series to life. *Shout out to Jenks and Al-fist pump* This series embodies everything I love about UF.

1. Assorted Supernaturals ✔
2. Magic of some sort ✔
3. Mystery ✔
4. Battles ✔
5. Elements of surprise ✔
6. Romance ✔

I'll admit I was a little worried about things getting wrapped up with this final book. I mean, there were quite a few unresolved issues still going. Not to mention she brought in a new element with the last book. So, I've had this book since the release date (9/9/14) and have been dragging my feet because I was afraid of disappointment. Sometimes I'm a dumbass...

Rachel is still fighting for balance between the races. She's still the only one who can truly pull them together but only with the help of her friends. If she can figure out how. All the while trying to keep her loved ones safe and herself alive. In typical Rachel fashion, she makes a mess of things too. But in the end, she saves the day and everything is wrapped up in a nice little package. We even get a little epilogue that shows us it was all worth it. Amazing! Bravo!

The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is (view spoiler)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Great review Nichole. You made me regret I didn't pick this series for shelf #2. :D But I already started reading The Novice (Summoner, #1) by Taran Matharu (hey surprise it actually is on the list of books I made lol). :)

message 58: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments Thanks Dragana. That book looks pretty good. I bet my husband would really like it too. It's up to me to find books for him but he has all these limitations that make it difficult, lol. I'll add it to his shelf but he won't read it until the whole series is complete >.< If you know of any good Fantasy books that are all published just send them my way :)

message 59: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Haha good to hear I'm not the only one. My husband uses me as a book filter too. :D I know he liked (from complete series): Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set (although there are more books in this series but set later in time with different characters), His Dark Materials, Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone & The Chronicles of Amber.
Sadly, most of the fantasy series I like are unfinished. :/

Yes! I really, really liked the combination of paranormal and mystery. I liked who the big bad was too. Ryan had moments were he was a judgmental prick and others when he wasn't. I'm very curious what his story is. Rhyzkahl is intriguing. Nice end.
Very happy that I enjoyed the second as much as the first. Let's hope that continues!

I really want to click on the spoiler, but if I do I might regret it:-) I almost picked The Undead Pool for the demons shelf and maybe I should have:-( I keep putting off the final 2 books. Since the series is SOS series of the year to read/re-read, I will get them read this year!

message 63: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments @ Dragana- Thanks! I've added them to his shelf. I keep telling him he's really missing out on some good books with all his restrictions but he's pretty stubborn :) He's been pushing me to read Shadowmarch for the longest time. Have you read that? I keep putting it off. It's not that I'm not interested because I really loved his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series but it's a 796 page book. I have to really be in the mood for it to make a commitment like that, lol. And there are 4 chunksters in that series. I'll get to it one of these days :)

@ Daffodil- We got snow too! Of course, it's only like 3 inches :) The Oklahoma meteorologists are pretty terrible though. It wasn't even supposed to be an inch! It's always like that too. They say 3-5 inches and we get a dusting...

@ Rachel- You are a better person than me, lol. I'm terrible about reading spoilers! I was the child that peaked at her Christmas presents :P But you're right, if you haven't read the last 2 books it will probably ruin or at least confuse things for you. I'm up to book 6 on Kara Gillian. I've enjoyed it so far. I'm trying to get current on most of my series this year so I might just have to push that one up too. So many books to read!

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments The Novice (Summoner, #1) by Taran Matharu

Shelf: Demons
Date read: 01. Mar. 2015.
Rating: 4.5 stars

It had a slow start and rushed ending but I LOVED the setting (magical boarding school) that reminded me of Harry Potter and they had cute demons as pets/magical helpers.
The main hero refreshingly avoided the cliche to be good at everything and struggled and had to work and learn hard to be good at magic. It didn't just happen.
Another thing that made The Novice a bit unique is that they added diversity with dwarfs and elves as secondary characters. And of course cute demon pets who also had their own personalities.
I liked the fact that there was no romance whatsoever in the book. The main character is 15-year old but I do not think this makes The Novice middle grade or young adult book. Just like Harry Potter - it's the book for every age. :)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Symbiont (Parasitology, #2) by Mira Grant

Shelf: Favorite
Date read: 26. Feb. 2015.
Rating: 3 stars

Symbiont was a first time it happened to me that I was annoyed by all the things I loved and that made Parasite one of my favorite series last year. Thoughtful realistic heroine who thinks before she acts, a big insight into her mind and her thoughts, quirky scientists and their experiments... This all worked well for a series intro, but I wanted something more from a second book. More action, more info what is happening in the world where sleepwalkers are ruling the streets.

message 66: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments Nichole, I understand him in some way. You get to be immersed in a world and do not forget details while sequel is published. I haven't read anything by Tad Williams (yet). I'll read it sometimes when I feel brave since big series with chuksters usually intimidate me. :)

Review:

In the final installment of The Experiment in Terror series things come full circle for Dex and Perry. What would you sacrifice to save the love of your life? Would you go to Hell and back, literally?

The previous books have all had a spook factor ranging from mild to "I just peed myself". This book was slightly different with a more sinister feeling to it. As I said, things come full circle and we see spookies from their past. Only this time, it's personal.

This was a good wrap up to the series. Questions were answered and things were resolved nicely. However, there was a whole lot going on and not everyone gets a HEA. But there was just something missing for me. I can't put my finger on it. *shrugs*

Review:
The first half through two thirds of this book was difficult. I had a hard time staying immersed in the universe, was easily distracted from reading (which hardly ever happens) and wondered what had happened to the book series I love. I plugged away at it and suddenly, somewhere in the last half of the book, realized I was caught up in the action and had been for quite some time. I'm trying to pinpoint exactly what was wrong in the beginning and I think part of it had to do with so many secondary characters, and there are a lot, meant that my favorites took the backseat to others. So first part, meh, but 5 stars for the last part of the book. It was hard to come up with an overall rating, but taking into consideration I ended wanting to immediately move on to book 9 in the series, I decided to go ahead and give it 4 stars.

One of the best things about this series is the characters. Kitty is snarky, seemingly irreverent and always ready to run off and face danger head on. The secondary characters have gotten a little out of control ... okay a lot out of control, so much so that I almost wish a character list was printed in an appendix. But from her conspiracy theorist turned secret agent best friend to ACE superconsciousness/protector, they all bring a little something different to the story.

Another great thing about this series is Koch's love of Comic Books comes through in not only textual references, but in writing style and tone, without actually reading like a comic book.

Despite the rocky start I had fun finishing the book and will definitely be reading Alien Collective.

Review:
NOTE: Sorry for any vagueness, I'm trying hard not to spoil anything for those not as far along in the series. Do not read the blurb for book 6 as it contains a spoiler.

The big thing that strikes me about this book is both a minus and a plus. It's plot line is totally different than the first 4 books in this series. Kara is not working a case as a cop. So on one hand I was disappointed because the book didn't meet my expectations. It was a little jarring to read what is basically a high fantasy book set smack dab in the middle of an urban fantasy series. On the other hand, it's actually a pretty good high fantasy book. We find out quite a bit about the demon realm, it's inhabitants and history.

The advancement in the overall story arc was interesting. Events from previous books take on new meaning and long term goals of certain characters are brought to light. Kara begins to fill in the gaps in her summoning knowledge. I'm definitely interested to see where things go from here.

I don't really feel in the mood to read Death Magic at the moment, so I'm going to browse through the group shelf and see if anything strikes my fancy. One possibility is Mine to Possess (Psy-Changeling, #4) by Nalini Singh , but it would be a reread and I'd rather not do that.

It was a sweet story. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. One thing I did like was that Sean did the chasing and admitted his feelings first. What I didn't like was Elise's denial was a tad bit too much and went on (and on).

Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop
Completed: 3/8/15
Rating: ★★★★☆

Unfortunately, I've had constant interruptions over the last week so I've had little reading time and it's been very sporadic. I think this also affected my rating and I won't be doing the book justice with my review. Short and sweet and trying to avoid spoilers. That being said, I still really love this series.

It's said that the cassandra sangue have 1000 cuts before the one that either kills them or makes them go mad. Meg, as the pathfinder, is trying to learn what triggers the need to cut and then discover if it's just the addiction ruling them or the actual need for prophecy. It's a very fine line. Through trial and error and controlled cutting they are starting to learn the signs. They're also trying to find alternative methods to fulfill prophecy. Sadly, not all sweet bloods can handle the freedom they were given and not all were saved from the bad people.

Simon is a progressive leader and is accepting more humans in his pack, not many but a few. But the Humans First League are still trying to wipe the Others out and all humans who are connected to them. However, the courtyard terra indigene are not the scariest of the bunch and they are all being watched by the Elders.

I absolutely love this series. The world building is fantastic and I find myself completely submerged in it. When I was able to read, that is. Simon and Meg are adorable together. There was a little development in their relationship but this is not a romance by any means. At least not yet. If only I didn't have to wait so long for the next one!

Do it! I think if I wasn't constantly interrupted it would have been 5 stars. So probably when I read them again, lol. I think Simon was the star in this one. In my eyes at least. Especially his interactions with Meg, pretty funny and cute.

I have company for the next 5 days so my reading time is limited, again. It makes me cranky, lol.

Nichole | 1199 comments I have a problem paying $10 for a kindle book. Or maybe I'm just cheap, lol.
