Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments We now have finished five of seven books for this round. Woot woot! Let's keep 'em rolling strong, y'all. We're doing great to get this game kicked off.

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Today's the last day to get books posted for this round. Eep! That means we'll be getting a new letter and category late tonight. Woot woot!

I swapped my book, because there was a different one worth more points. So my original is a back-up book in case we need it.

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Sorry about the points on that second pug book Hannah and I read, team. I thought it met the criteria to get us four points each. It still got us two, though.

Any thoughts on books for the current round: S, Secondary Female Character?

message 56: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Here are some books that might work:

Beyond All Dreams by Elizabeth Camden
Sarah Starling

Safe by the Marshal's Side (Witness Protection #1) by Shirlee McCoy
Serena Summers

Anyone else also have suggestions for 2-pointers or 3-pointers? The names MUST be first, middle, and/or last of a secondary female character.

message 57: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments I will let you know if I come across something. That is a hard category to know the name of a secondary character.

message 58: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments It is! Yes, let’s help each other out as we stumble across some that work.

There are loads of S names in Amish books (Sarah, Susanna, Stolzfus, Schwartz, etc.). I looked through heaps last night (stayed up until three trying to find books that would work for 2-3 points). I came up empty but did find plenty that work for 1 point. So I will be reading at least one of the ones Melanie shared (which I shared here, above). I am hoping to get to both so we will have a back-up book, just in case.

message 59: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments I found a book where the main character's young daughter is named Susie Schwartz (page 48 is where I see her whole name mentioned). The book is Loving Her Amish Neighbor by Rebecca Kertz and I think I will read this one as it is a physical book on my shelf and I am trying to get those read.

message 60: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great find, Brittany! Thanks so much for sharing. :)

message 61: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments This one's a general market nonfiction book about the Cold War:
A Spy Named Orphan The Enigma of Donald Maclean by Roland Philipps
"hired Sylvia Shrubb" on page 273

I have not yet read this book, so I'm unsure about negative content. I read a lot of WWII and some Cold War nonfiction books, so it was in my stash. :)

message 62: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie I searched for an hour yesterday and could only find 1 point books...

message 63: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments That’s all right, Vinnie. We will take every point we can get. 😊

message 64: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I've spent probably over thirteen hours (spread out in clumps) searching for books since the reveal of this round's letter and category, and I'm coming up pretty empty, other than the ones already mentioned above.

I'm sorry I couldn't find any additional 2-pointers for us to have as options.

Which book is everyone reading? I'll get them added into our tracker.

I think we still have to have a quote mentioning the character's name in the story when we post our completed books.

message 65: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 22 comments The Court of Swans by Melanie Dickerson has a secondary character named Sir John Stanley. I believe that would count for 2 points, but I may be wrong. I think I’m going to read this unless I find another book for more points.

message 66: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments It has to be a secondary female character this round. Melanie also said characters’ titles don’t count for points. Only first, middle, and last names.

Do you have another book with a female character that will work?

message 67: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 22 comments Oh, I missed that it had to be a female character. I’ll keep looking then.

message 68: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 22 comments Engaged in Trouble by Jenny B Jones has a secondary female character named Sylvie Sutton, so I’ll probably read this one.

message 69: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great find! I'll get that added to the tracker. Thanks, Mindy!

message 70: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Here's the cover of the book Mindy found, in case anyone else on the team needs to see it.

Engaged in Trouble (An Enchanted Events Mystery #1) by Jenny B. Jones
Sylvie Sutton

message 71: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Kellyn, Hannah, Vinnie, Mary: Any thoughts on which book you’ll be reading for Seconday Female Character whose name (first, middle, or last) begins with S?

Books are due Feb 16.

message 72: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Here are some ONE-pointers I've found:

Secrets She Kept by Cathy Gohlke
"she did not mean Elsa Sommer" p.346

The Last Bookshop in London A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin
"with little Sarah in tow" p.??

From Sky to Sky (No Less Days, #2) by Amanda G. Stevens
"Cady Schuster was in great shape." p.??

Burden of Proof by DiAnn Mills
"...to kidnap Isabella Snyder?" p.??

The Reluctant Warrior (High Sierra Sweethearts, #2) by Mary Connealy
"Delia Scott had taken pity on him." p.??

message 73: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie I am reading Maid by Nita Prose...it has a character named Sunshine and another one named Shunita. They are only mentioned seldomly, but even only once would count, right?

message 74: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Yes, even one mention is enough, if I understood the game instructions clearly. Great find, Vinnie!

message 75: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Found another one-pointer.

The Stone Wall by Beverly Lewis
"... cousins, Glen and Sadie Flaud..." 2%

I'm listening to this one right now, should be done in about a half hour (it's due back to the library shortly after that). So it'll be a back-up book, as I have a two-pointer in the works.

message 76: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments I finished and posted my book. Loving Her Amish Neighbor by Rebecca Kertz It is worth 2 points.

I will let you know if I end up with a book that will work for backup if we need it.

message 77: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great job, Brittany!

message 78: by Brittany (last edited Feb 06, 2022 03:59PM) (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments Let me know if we need a backup book, because I just read one today that has a secondary female character that will be worth 1 point. Seeking Refuge by Lenora Worth pg 95 - "Tobias liked Beth Schrock." (Mrs. Schrock is the wife of Tobias' employer.)

message 79: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Will do. Thanks, Brittany!

message 80: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie Just finished mine!

message 81: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great work, Vinnie!

message 82: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I'm halfway through my book.

message 83: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments Andrea - I went ahead and posted the "back up book" of mine in the thread in case it ends up being needed. I will delete if we don't end up using it. I just didn't want to forget.

message 84: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments All righty. If I get a two-point back-up, as I’m planning, we’ll move yours below it so the 2-ptr will get logged first. Does that sound like it will work?

message 85: by Andrea (last edited Feb 09, 2022 09:24AM) (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I finished an urgent review book yesterday (it's also a back-up, though I doubt we'll need it), so now I can focus on game books again, in my off time from my two jobs.

message 86: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments sounds good to me

message 87: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 22 comments Just posted my book!

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great job, Mindy!

message 89: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie yay, we are making good progress!

message 90: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments That we are!

I'm trying to get my book finished up in the next two days. Edits had me swamped this week. I'm still on that job the rest of the month, but I've made enough progress this week to feel somewhat ahead, so I can split my time a little better to get those for-leisure books in.

message 91: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Got my book finished. Starting a back-up book worth 2 points now.

message 92: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 1038 comments Checking in with all of you. Goodreads is not showing me any notifications since Saturday on my laptop or my app on phone. Anyone else having this problem? Just curious.

message 93: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Yes. I messaged GR about it. They are working on fixing it. I've found the best solution in the meantime, on the desktop, is to click the "my group discussions" button (two to the right of the search box) and scrolling down to CFD to see if there are red-lettered "# new" messages right now. You can then click on that red-lettered alert to be sent straight to the new comments. Such a hassle, but it's workable.

message 94: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Hannah told me she read a 2-pointer. Just waiting on her to post that. I believe Kellyn is also working on the same 2-pointer to replace her 1-pointer. I think those are the only remaining slots to be filled this round, so as soon as Hannah posts her book, we won't need any back-up books this round. Yay!
