K | 14 comments DISCLAIMER. Don't try this at home. I'm not inviting anyone to do this, I merely showing how it's done so we all stop taking the avg. rating seriously.
STEP 1: Publish a succesful romance that doesn't need the approval of literary agents to become a bestseller.
STEP 2: Allow anyone to add as many editions of the book that will be counted for the average.
STEP 3: Allow your competence to open sock puppets accounts and rate the smallest editions 1-to 3 stars. Book reading isn't required, just the rating.
description

STEP 4: Don't say anything to Goodreads staff, they're after all against what women read the most : Self-published Romance.
STEP 5: Watch how a book goes from a healthy 4:01 avg to a 3.99 thanks to small editions.
You're welcome.

K | 14 comments Goodreads staff allows this because they're good pals with Big big publishers, literary agents, bookstores, tv networks etc. In other words a group of people that got affected by the wave of self-published romance. Self publishing is a democratic process in which readers and authors are in control.

This method is used against fantasy romance the most: Glint, Pestilence, Rhapsodic, The V Girl, Married to Magic, Den of Vipers, A touch of scarlett, it's more difficult that this method works with contemporary romance, but yet here we are.

Andie Lovess (andielovess) | 1 comments This is why when I rate a book, for the assistance of others, I:

1. Give full details of why I liked the book and why I didn’t.

2. Give a small list afterwards of my breakdown for my rating; I average up those to give me my star rating. Sadly I can only base it out of 5

My additional perimeters are:

1. Overall
2. Plot
3. Character development
4. Spice (I mostly read romance)
5. Are there any Triggers? (Usually followed up by what they are, if the author listed them or have a warning in general, and any other info I can offer)

Based off the above in 1-5 stars, I average that total up to make my rating of the book itself.

If people left more honest reviews, and why, then what Goodreads or any other site/system that may alter star ratings, wouldn’t matter - not when you can read the honest reviews from someone. HOWEVER - I have found some people rate horrible based on their own personal issues: “I don’t normally read dark romance, but I deceived to give it a try and it’s not for me. I won’t read anything from this author again 1 star”.

Come on, don’t do that.

I hate when people do that! If you know what you hate, don't pick it up just to bring down the rating! But let's face it there's no stopping those trolls, so I don't read reviews anymore cuz think about this,
*looking up quality reviews = 1 to 10 minutes
* reading 3-5 reviews= 1.5 to 10 minutes
Total time wasted: 2.5 to 20 minutes
Do you guys realize that we could be reading the amazon sample in half that time? By devoting 3-5 minutes to read sample we could easily see first-hand if the book is for us cuz there's so much information about the book just like:
♥ If the book is in first person, is it easy to be in the MC's character head?
♥ Are the names of the characters something that can be distracting?
♥Flasbacks? Are they confusing?
♥Grammar Nazis: is the book edited well? Cuz those things are obvious from the beginning, my grammar is so so bad, though.
♥ Annoying cliches? Not another "a girl not like the others" progonist please!
♥ Do you dig the writing style?
And that way we don't have to feed the trolls that post fake info such as saying that
Making Faces by Amy Harmon
is racist? FALSE
or that
Rhapsodic (The Bargainer, #1) by Laura Thalassa
contains cheating? FALSE
or
War (The Four Horsemen, #2) by Laura Thalassa
Is racist towards muslims? FALSE
or
Beautifully Cruel (Beautifully Cruel, #1) by J.T. Geissinger
H rapes h? False
Notice that all these books are KU, so you can always borrow, skim in search of your triggers and verify the reviews to discount immediatly the trolls that post false info about triggers.

I have this theory: If the book is fantasy that can appeal to the YA crowd it gets targeted by the literary agencies accounts.
If the book is romance, it gets targeted by the accounts of the ultra-wealthy KU contemporary authors 'cuz it's truly like the hunger games, too many books vying for our attention and, romance authors with new releases, if they get competitive they have the money and power to use their people to post bad things about the other books. Either way ratings are meh!

Unfortunately, people aren't honest, and there's nothing we can do about that. I read some reviews after I'm done with a book just to see who agrees with my feelings about certain books.

I do that only when the book isn't on the KU library. If cover and synopsis draw me in, it's a done deal, I start reading and if the book is boring, I just return it.
