Julia (juliace) | 102 comments Going back over previous years I see that I tend to stick to the same genre and storylines.
My 2022 Goals is to read more new authors and to read genre outside of my comfort zone... I especially want to target westerns, biography or memoirs, HF outside of WW2, listen to an audiobook of a print book I was not able to get into.

madrano | 23670 comments Interesting idea, Julie. I particularly like the audio idea. Reading what some folks at Book Nook have said about audio and the heightened appreciation, this is an excellent solution. At least you'll be able to see if this engages you better.

Best of Luck in the 2022 Reading Year!

Thanks ... the very first book I'm going to listen to is TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD

message 9: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23670 comments We listened to that in '07, as we drove through the southern states. It was a great setting for that great book. And it was my husband's first time "reading" it. I hope you enjoy it, Julia.

Good luck, Julia.

I have to say I 💜 the Snoopy pic.

message 11: by John (new)

John | 1944 comments Hi, Julia! Where in NJ are you from? I lived most of my life in the Morristown area. I listened the memoir You're Never Weird on the Internet as an out-of-comfort-zone book, giving it five stars.

I grew up in Bergen County.
Thanks for the recommendation!

I love snoopy... I looked for a Joe Cool pic, but no luck.

message 14: by Patty (new)

Patty (krabbypattycakes) Hi! I was just thinking about this today whilst reorganizing my Goodreads bookshelves. It dawned on me that I too tend to stick to the same type of books and lately it's been a lot of psychological thrillers or mystery type books. I agree with you about going outside of my comfort zone. I'm trying to branch off and read more books from genre I never imagined I would read...like nonfiction. I'm also going to try audio books for the first time and hopefully I get to enjoy it. Here's to stepping outside of comfort zone!

John | 1944 comments Hi, Patty!

This is a book that I often recommend to folks who are new to nonfiction, especially where the audio edition is particularly well done: Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea. It's arranged to provide maximum suspense value.

Patty, when it comes to audio books you have to find what works for you. Don't give up quickly.

I can't listen while I am doing other tasks as I lose concentration.
I listen while I am exercise walking outside or on the treadmill. That works best for me.

My requirements tend to be.
- A book under 400 pages
- linear plot - easy to follow on audio
- Not too many character- again easier to follow
- I also like memoirs as it's just like someone talking to me and I find it easy to follow. Try various genre and see what you like.
Maybe start with an author you already enjoy.
- The narrator is key. They can make or break a book.

As to getting out of your comfort zone. Try out 100 book reading challenge.

Good luck !

Huh. My mom grew up in Glen Ridge, John. Moved away while she was in high school. Some 25 years later she and my dad moved to Ft. Wayne, and at a neighborhood meeting she was stunned to discover that one of her new Ft. Wayne neighbors was the older sister of one of her childhood best friends in Glen Ridge!

The Montclair hospital maternity ward is across the street (also the town line) from the main hospital, so my father's place of birth is Glen Ridge; my grandmother went into labor at her mother's in Upper Montclair.

This is an excellent choice. I found the stories fascinating and compelling. Since reading the book, i've taken more notice of North Korea and where it has been heading. Good suggestion, John.

I don't read alot of non fiction, but if you're looking for something to start with, I REALLY enjoyed these....

Julia (juliace) | 102 comments Jennifer wrote: "I second A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy"

I thought this was a very good book ... I thought it was well written she talked about hindsight on her end but never denied or tried to excuse what her son did ...

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Exactly. She owned it and that has to have been very difficult to grapple with.

message 24: by madrano (new)

madrano | 23670 comments What a powerful story. Kudos to Sue Klebold for exploring her experience in hopes of helping others.

I also thought it was good. It hard to imagine her pain and regret on so many levels.

madrano | 23670 comments It sounds as though it would be a winner, too. I have heard of Bragg but not read anything by him. However, looking at the books he's written, i'm drawn to The Best Cook in the World: Tales from My Momma's Table. His mother sounds much like my mother & her mother--good cooks but who needs a recipe?

I own the book but never read it. My books are in storage, so I don't know if it made the cut. I had to donate so many books. :(

Thanks! I hadn't realized what a rut I was in as far as my reading habit. I thought it would be easy to read new genre / authors but it's harder than I thought it would be.
