I just finished Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson It is abook of family secrets and pain, but I could not get invested in it. My review, 3.5 stars rounded up. I struggled with rounding up or down. If you like Kristin Hannah, this has some of the same themes, but not the emotional intensity. My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Not a thriller or a mystery, but literary fiction.
I'm currently enjoying - - Darkness at Dawn: Early Suspense Classics by Cornell Woolrich
- Protect and Defend by Vince Flynn
- The Complaints by Ian Rankin
Now starting A THOUSAND STEPS, the new hardcover stand-alone novel by T. Jefferson Parker, which is set in Laguna Beach, California back in 1968.
City of the Dead
by Jonathan KellermanPsychologist Alex Delaware helps LAPD detective Milo Sturgis investigate a tricky case.
Good mystery but I was irked by the ending. 3 stars

Hi all. Nice to meet yous :-) I'm new to this group, and almost completely new to the genre(s). I watch a lot of crime and mystery TV shows these days, especially UK-based ones, so I imagine I'll eventually try reading a novel in the genre. The vast majority of what I've been reading over the past few decades has been sci-fi and fantasy, though occasionally I'll wander into a different genre. To be fair, some of the stories I've read in those genres are mysteries, or at least have some mystery elements; they are simply set in more speculative worlds (and some people would argue that such stories therefore do not fit the definition of "real" sci-fi or fantasy). But anyway, my current read is The Eye of the World, which had been on my to-read list since I worked in bookstores many years ago (I lost count of how many customers told me I "had to read" this series). I'd like to finish at least this first volume before I watch the show that recently came out.
Anywho, thank you for having me, and nice to meet you :-)

Late last night I started reading Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe , who also wrote one of my favorite books, Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.

I loved Wolf Hall.

Yay! Love Dame Agatha, Carol. May I suggest The Secret Adversary? I feel that Tommy and Tuppence don't get as much love as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.
I just finished Sea Storm
Fun, entertaining thriller. My four star review:

Set aside Collected Stories by Raymond Chandler -- good reading, but bulky to haul back and forth to work. Now about to begin, Golden Age Detective Stories ed. by Otto Penzler.

I've been reading a lot of SF, not so much fantasy, but then I turned to thrillers and I'm absolutely loving to be part of this community!

It's so hard to imagine that Something to Hide is her 21st mystery! She's been at this for a long, long time.

If the Dead Rise Not
by Phillip KerrBernie Gunther #6, probably best to read the series in order or at least read the first one first. Takes place half in Berlin 1934 and half in Havana 1954 as Bernie goes about the dirty business of staying alive and also doing a little good. In 1934 Bernie is working as security in the famous Hotel Adlon and encounters a beautiful Jewish American writer and an American gangster working with the Nazis to prevent an American boycott of the 1936 Olympics. And having survived the war Bernie again encounters them in Batista's Cuba of 1954. Kerr's series is great historical mystery writing -- the series is highly recommended.
I only post books read in the Mystery, Crime, Thriller genres in this thread and they are usually a lot of my go-to reads, so I'm surprised to find that I have only read one in this new year!!!Just finished Hunting Season by Nevada Barr. #10 in her Anna Pigeon series. Anna returns to the Natchez Trace Parkway and quickly is up to her neck in mysteries. 3 stars.
I also read Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. The serialized story that inspired Bram Stoker's classic Dracula. It is a short quick read and worth the read just to see where Stoker drew some of his ideas from.
Now working my way through FAMILY BUSINESS the latest hardcover release in the Lydia Chin / Bill Smith series written by S.J. Rozan. I'm really glad she brought Lydia and Bill back after a long hiatus.

Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am by Julia Cooke
The Art of War by Sun Tzu
Jeffery Deaver's short story, Captivated, is a prequel to his Colter Shaw series. Shaw is using some old-school tactics - actual maps and interviews - to find a missing wife.
3.5★ Link to my review of Captivated
I loved Aussie author Christian White's latest novel Wild Place. The local Neighbourhood Watch group gets a little too active during the 1989 Christmas holidays when a teen disappears.
