I finished reading The Maid by Nita Prose. Took me way too long to get around to reading this one but I did choose it for my ftf bc to read. Really good book enjoyed by everyone. Now, I'm struggling to read a non-fiction, The Watchmakers: A Story of Brotherhood, Survival, and Hope Amid the Holocaust by Harry Lenga. So far five days and I'm only half way though and it's not that long a book.
I was surprised to learn I was a bit mistaken about the significance of the actual date, June 19. The Juneteenth Story: Celebrating the End of Slavery in the United States by Alliah L. Agostini set me straight in this well-illustrated book for kids (and ignorant grown-ups like me).
4★ My Juneteenth Story review with pictures

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie - classic and the ultimate closed-circle mystery published in 1939My review - www.Goodreads.com/review/show/4778668543
My 4 star review of Daughter of Redwinter
by Ed McDonald:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
This is the first book in a new epic fantasy series. Overall, it is gripping and thought-provoking. The high stakes and smooth writing made it a page turner for me. There’s a lot of time spent introducing the characters and some of their back-stories as well as world-building, but that’s not unusual in the first book in a series of this magnitude. However, there is a lot of introspection by the main character that slows the pace as times.
All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation by Rebecca TraisterI picked up this book knowing nothing about the writer, and this was just not a good fit for me.

Currently reading Things you do in the Dark. So far so good. About halfway in. Mystery but not too creepy.
Lori wrote: "Currently reading Things you do in the Dark. So far so good. About halfway in. Mystery but not too creepy."I am doing a buddy read of Things We Do in the Dark starting July 5th. I'm looking forward to it. I've only read one book by Jennifer Hillier before and I really enjoyed it.
I'm wrapping up Mug Shot today. I thought it was ok. I'm a little done with the tropes though - spicy red head that 3 gorgeous men are all attracted to. Meh.Next I'm starting The Gatekeeper. A friend reviewed it as a mashup of Orphan X and Jack Reacher, which should be excellent.
Keli wrote: "I just finished "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern. Which was wonderful. I'm currently reading "The Other Side of Night" by Adam Hamdy. It's really good."Night Circus is SO good!!
I am very fond of Aussie author Emma Viskic's Caleb Zelic, but this is said to be the deaf investigator's last story. (I tweeted to her that Kat and the ancestors will pester her to continue!) Those Who Perish is excellent, and I want more!
4.5~5★ My review of Those Who Perish
Sherlock Holmes Retold for Children by Alex Woolf with illustrations by Eve O'Brien is a terrific set of classic stories that can be enjoyed by all ages. This is a 16-book box set of chapter books, but there are singles and audios and small sets, too. All libraries should have them!
4.5~5★ My review of Sherlock Holmes retold with some of the illustrations
Here is my 4 star review of Harlem Sunset
by Nekesa Afia.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Set in Harlem in the late 1920’s, Harlem Sunset by Nekesa Afia brings to life the vibrant nightlife, jazz music, dancing, and cultural awareness of the times. It’s not just a historical mystery, but also the character journey of protagonist Louise Lloyd.
I won't update everything I've read since I was here last, but here are a couple.A fun read was Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
A well written biography - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
An Afro-Asian romance (don't be put off by my stars--almost every romance I like gets this one as do some other genres) https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I’ve read several books over the past two months.(MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS)
- Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus - absolutely loved it!
- The Sheltering Sky by Paul Boles - absolutely hated it. Had to finish it for my book club.
- God Spare the Girls by Kelsey McKinney - I liked it and was interested in the author’s approach to Christianity, sisterhood, and religious “infidelity.”
- Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt - it was an enjoyable, escapist read that didn’t quite live up to the hype I’d read. I loved Marcellus!
- The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles - I thought it could have been a lot better. I was left frustrated that they never actually made the trip to find their mother.
I’m currently reading Final Girls by Riley Sager.

Here is my 4 star review of Harmony of Fire
by Brian Feehan:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Brian Feehan’s debut novel, Harmony of Fire is an intense paranormal romantic suspense novel with plenty of action, thrills, and edginess. The author’s creativity and great world-building stand out in this novel. (Brian is the son of Christine Feehan).
Euphoria is a lovely state if you can achieve it. Lily King's Nell Stone (a fictional version of anthropologist Margaret Mead ) does get carried away with her studies of primitive societies, but this book is more about jealousy and desire in her own. Fascinating setting, research, and characters.
5★ My review of Euphoria
The campaign for women's right to vote spanned 70 years in the US. A battle that long to thousands of supporters yet only a few names stand out as leadership.
Why They Marched: Untold Stories of the Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote by Susan Ware highlights more than a dozen suffragists. My review - www.Goodreads.com/review/show/4783057819
That clever femme-fatale Phryne Fisher solves all kinds of crimes in these short stories, The Lady with the Gun Asks the Questions, by Aussie author Kerry Greenwood. One for fans of the fabulous Miss Fisher.
3.5★ My review of The Lady with the Gun ...
Sylvester or The Wicked Uncle by Georgette HeyerI've enjoyed all the Heyer novels except this one (something had to be the least liked).

My 4 star review of Upgrade

My 3.59 star review rounded to 4 stars for A Remarkable Rogue
by Anna Harrington:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Anna Harrington provides readers with a historical fiction tale that includes romance, danger, and suspense. This book has a solid plot, with great character depth, extraordinary characters, and a fascinating mystery.

I've started Fatal Witness
. It is #7 of the Erika Foster series that started with The Girl in the Ice. I'm only 13% in, but it jumped right in.

My 3 star review of: Miss Aldridge Regrets
by Louise Hare. This was an enjoyable historical mystery and character journey.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My 3 star review of The Finalists
by David Bell:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The author layers multiple themes as the story focuses on the challenges students face in order to get an education as well as the lengths colleges will go to in order to receive donations from wealthy donors.
I'm now able to post my 3 star review of a cozy mystery:Death by Bubble Tea
by Jennifer J. Chow.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Immune: a Journey into the Mysterious System that Keeps You Alive by Philipp DettmerAn unconventional but memorable nonfiction about the powerful Immune system. The author's style made the information accessible to many ages (teenaged and up) and regardless of the reader's knowledge level of biology.
My review - www.Goodreads.com/review/show/4788409912
I have started Things We Do in the Dark
by Jennifer Hillier. This is just the second book I have read by this author and it jumps right into the action.

I am reposting this in remembrance of much-loved neurologist Oliver Sacks on his birthday, the 9th of July. The extraordinary cases he talks about in his 1985 book,The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat are unforgettable.
5★ My review of The Man, etc . . .
Here is my 4 star review of The Retreat
by Sarah Pearse:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Deaths, an island with a history of murder, violence, superstition, child abuse, and a strong storm make this a disturbing and suspenseful story. The world-building was well-done and the premise was excellent.
