PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments I'm really enjoying this historical mystery series by C.S. Harris, set in London in the early 1800s with England and France at war (again? still? always?). In Why Mermaids Sing, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Lord Devlin, is investigating a murder, and then another, and then . . .

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments The Things They Carried in Vietnam include more than stuff. This phenomenal book by Tim O'Brien was a finalist for the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Included in a soldier's burden are shame, fear, and embarrassment. I feel like I know his people, and I wish they hadn't had to go.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments The audio versions of the Bony books by Aussie author, Arthur W. Upfield all come with a disclaimer about language and attitudes expressed being those common in the 1930s. It certainly gives this historical crime fiction an authentic feel. Peter Hosking's rendition of Winds of Evil is excellent.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments The Body on the Moor Is an excellent crime novel woven through the real-life events of The Moors Murders of the mid-1960s. Author Rebecca Griffiths gives a chilling portrayal of Hindley and Brady, and I could see them in my mind in every scene that featured this pair. A real page-turner.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments Kate Binchy has exactly the right voice to narrate the audio version of beloved Irish author Maeve Binchy's sixteenth novel, Minding Frankie. I read the print version ten years ago, and I'd forgotten just how well this author can pull at your heart strings. 5★s
